Has Sondheim ever been honored? I should think that he should be before ALW.
I have no problems with Dolly being honored. I think she and her music are fantastic. And I'm still bitter about the Oscar That Should Have Been.

Yes, Sondheim has been honored. Could you imagine the uproar here if ALW received one before Sondheim?
PEACE.

I figured he already had been, but I just thought I'd ask. It would have been sheer madness had he not been. Phew!

I can't speak for other nominees, but I can't see how someone would begrudge Dolly Parton a honor and then request that Joni Mitchell or Lily Tomlin be given one. I love both Joni and Lily but Dolly has had far more of impact on music and culture than both women combined. Combined with the fact that she rose from abject poverty with nothing but a dream and talent speaks volumes about her character.
It seems like if someone doesn't fully understand the scope of an artist's life or career then they deem that they are unworthy. It sounds like the previousposter doesn't deem them worthy because they don't like them. What would make Lily Tomlin a better choice? Or even Joni Mitchell?
Like I said, I can't speak to or defend the other nominees. But if you ask a fan about Smokey or Spielberg they will tell you all the ways in which they are deserving and have had an impact.
I think honoring Dolly Parton for everything that she done and represents show A LOT of class.

It's a matter of opinion. I think if you ask people in the music business/arts who was a bigger influence more of them would site Joni Mitchell than Dolly Parton.
PEACE.

They might cite them, too.
I would still say Dolly has had, if not bigger, then at least as big a cultural impact as Joni.
So more "artists" (and I use the quotations on purpose) are influenced by Joni. There's no denying the very large imprint Dolly has left on country music, mainstream music and entertainment, and on the lucrative bleached blond wig and breast implant industry.
So give her credit.
Plus, I can't help but love that woman. I smell a 9 to 5 movie night coming on.

maybe not around here, sm2, where we're all too sophisticated to listen to, ew, country music, but someone bought the estimated 316 million albums sold in the first half of 2006. i mean besides me.

Dolly Parton is one of the greatest live performers of all time, as well as being a fantastic and prolific songwriter, talented actress and astute business woman. She is also one of the most whip-smart, quotable people in the public eye. She came from humble beginnings and has always kept a humble heart.
She is an American original.
Dolly's influence is not to be sneezed at. She is incredibly well respected in the industry.

Now if we can just get Doris Day that honorary Oscar...
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

To delineate that Dolly has only made imprints on country music and it's fans is pure insanity. If you look at the list of women and men who have drawn inspiration from Dolly it extends far beyond country music.
The women on her tribute album all ASKED to cover a song as a homage to her. It is a diverse group indeed including Sinead O'Connor, Me'Shell N'Degeocello, Joan Osbourne, Melissa Etheridge.
Let's not forget the basics: she is at heart a female singer/ songwriter (just like Joni Mitchell) with a guitar who was never formally taught how to read or write music. She learned via "pick up."
She is an international phenomenon, a force of nature, and a gentle spirit. Don't make me even get into how she has, from day one, been a vocal supporter of the LGBT community and disenfranchised folks from all walks of life and an advocate for neglected and abused children.
