That was the other thing - giving Effie and CC a father. Why sing about finally having family and not being alone if they had family? And in those seven years the dad never let it slip to his son that Effie had popped out a kid?

I always understood it was Geffen who wouldn't give up the rights to have it filmed, so when he did, I can only imagine it was like everything else with him - his way or no way.

I was being a stinker, stockard...there were some heated arguments about that subject on bww. They were hilarious!
I love how Jennifer (who I was blown away by, especially vocally) has now gotten skinny. She looks great, but she got the part of Effie because she was big...and won an oscar. Now that she's skinny, she probably wont work again. And I agree about those slimfast ads...she's so awkward.
The performance in Dreamgirls that was astonishing was Eddie's. He really deserved an oscar.

Didn't people say that Eddie Murphy lost the Oscar because Norbit came out during Oscar season? I agree he was great in the movie.
I didn't have problems with Jimmy dying, but that cameo of Loretta Devine is really really awkward. Is she drunk?
I always think if I didn't know the stage show I'd still have warmer feelings for the movie. There's so SO MUCH music cut and so many arbitrary changes that it's just hard to sit through for me.
Q, that would make sense, that David Geffen was as responsible for the finished product as anyone, but I just don't get what the point of forcing the story into the story of the Supremes really did for it.

I thought that Beyonce was much better as "Young Deena" where she seemed very energetic and eager to be a star.
Maybe her "Older Deena" was supposed to be 'controlled', but the lines were very bland.
One in particular was the cue to "When I first saw you"...I think it was "Maybe you just don't know who I really am". It was so obvious that a song was coming up.
I also HATED the scene with the director where Deena says "cut the ****ing bull****". She didn't need to curse AT ALL...and if she did, she should have said it with a bit more feeling.

There was a lot of bad buzz about Norbit before its release that was blamed and I guess people wanted to give Alan Arkin a lifetime achievement award. I liked Eddie in this film but my personal choice would have been Jackie Earle Haley in Little Children.

I thought Alan Arkin had a great comedic role in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, but then again, (even though I was all about Hudson at the time) I feel Abigail Breslin should've won as well. Either way, Eddie Murphy was indeed great in the movie but I guess people were worried about the kind of material he'd produce after winning (ie more NORBIT type stuff). Jackie Earle Haley was indeed brilliant in LITTLE CHILDREN, wouldn't have minded seeing both him and Kate Winslet take top prizes home.
I agree with just about everything Phyllis and a few others have said regarding the terrible screenplay. I've never seen the show but I'm more or less familiar with the original score. I don't have as many problems with the cuts (though the butchering of something as great as "Heavy" is such a shame), but I do have major problems with the ways in which Bill Condon constantly avoids letting the movie be an actual musical. He has absolutely no concept for the film, it's so inconsistent, he is not able to create a "world" for the musical. I mean, the first book number doesn't happen until 30 min. into the movie, and I just remember when I saw it at the movies audiences just started laughing (when they started singing "Family," which becomes an incredibly cheesy number after watching it more than a couple times), it doesn't work. CHICAGO, HAIRSPRAY, MAMMA MIA, SWEENEY TODD and MOULIN ROUGE (musicals in the past few years that were financially and/or critically successful) all start with a musical number that sets up the musical aspect of the movies, they don't wait 30 min. into it to let you figure out that characters are gonna sing book numbers.
I think Beyonce shines in the musical numbers, she owns them, but her line readings have no depth, they are all really obvious and expected and I always feel like she's reading a line, I don't think at any point she's able to make me believe she's not Beyonce trying to act as Deena.And wow the scene with John Lithgow is atrocious, the way she looks at him when she says "That won't be a problem, Jerry" is so campy. Jamie Foxx acts as if he is above the whole thing (he also turned down the movie because of money and didn't re-consider until Beyonce and Eddie Murphy signed on).
