This is the first time I've seen it and I can totally see why Jennifer Hudson won the Oscar. She's fabulous. I'm in tears.

Well now I'm just getting PISSED! I've always disliked Diana Ross and this movie is not helping. I mean I know it's "fiction" but still.

Beyonce was exceptional too. Beyonce went through a metamorphosis to play Deena Jones. She deserved a lot more kudos than she got.

I thought Beyonce was perfect. I liked all the women. And Eddie.

I've come around to enjoy it quite a bit. First viewing left me cold - but I've realized I had NO objectivity. After seeing the original cast on Broadway, I really had to let go of that, and approach the movie on its own terms.

I can certainly understand that, Q. And I do think Beyonce, Eddie and even Jamie were awesome. When I made my OP it was before they had really reached their stride in the movie. Overall, I thought it was a great movie.

I didn't like Beyonce until she sang Listen. I felt like I held my breath until the end of the song.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I was watching this last night! I've seen it several times and for some reason, for me, the movie starts getting good after I Love You, I Do. Anything before that really bores me. I don't know why though...

It's a good movie overall and Jennifer Hudson definitely deserved her Oscar!

The disappointing thing for me was the movie's soundtrack. I left the theater and walked right in to Virgin records and bought the 2 disc cd. The whole thing has a very "sterile" studio sound. All of the exitement in the music is sucked out of it on the recording.

This movie hasn't really stood the test of time for me, I think it has some moments of brilliance but it never reaches the levels of magic that say something like CHICAGO or MOULIN ROUGE do. Mainly, I have major issues with Bill Condon constantly apologizing for the fact that the film is a musical as opposed to embracing it, it makes for some really awkward musical numbers. Jamie Foxx is absolutely atrocious. I think Hudson is good, especially when she's singing, but not sure if she deserved that Oscar as much as everyone thinks she did (and as much as I thought she did at the time), and I still think Beyonce cannot deliver a line to save her life. I do like Eddie Murphy in it a lot and find Anika Noni Rose to be quite sweet as Lorrell. The "And I Am Telling You" scene is perfection though.

I think that's part of the reason I thought she was perfect - there was almost an 'emptiness' to her communication, that seemed to fit Deena perfectly (for me, at least.)

And I still think Ms. Hudson deserved that Oscar

Unc - I know what you mean by the music, but I almost always have that problem with filmed musicals - I just don't expect anything else at this point.

I'm mostly with Ray, in that I don't think the movie really holds up. It still has some good moments, but it's so jumbled with its sheepishness about being a musical and Bill Condon's almost OCD need to beat it over the head that "THIS IS REALLY ABOUT THE SUPREMES" in a way that the stage version never does. So much music taken out to put in so many irrelevant plot points.

I don't think Beyonce is all that bad, but probably could have benefited from the obvious extra help that Jennifer Hudson got. Watch her in anything else (the Sex and the City movie, her weight loss commercials, pretty much ANYTHING where she is speaking pre-scripted lines) and you can rest assured she'll never win another Oscar.

I'm with ya Phyl. I liked it in the theaters and probably defended it here, but re-watching it the other night all I could do was yawn. There is so much electricity to a stage production of Dreamgirls (even a so-so one) and when this movie stops singing, it gets tedious so fast. Who cares about the director of Deena's movie? Who needs to see Jimmy die, much less hear people we've never met reminisce about him. And Listen? Listen, that song is pointless-- unless you've cast Beyonce and she needs another song to underline the fact that none of this was her fault...really. She's totally Innocent. She had it just as hard as Efie. Poor Deena.

Oh god, the John Lithgow/Office Guy stuff. WTF is that?

The title number would be a perfect moment in the film if not for the idiotic cut to Curtis and Deena's mom.

I don't really see Listen - honestly, I think the only of the three added songs with any merit - as making Deena out to be a saint (although the rewritten version now regrettably in the stage show really makes Deena the one all at fault and somehow manages to excuse all Effie's contributions to her own demise), but it's still a headscratcher why they keep saying (in something else that was never in the stage version) that Deena doesn't really have that great of a voice, when she clearly does.

Honestly, the more I think about the movie the more stupid I realize it is.

ETA - Heh to Q. ANYTHING is going to look like genius next to the Chorus Line movie! "Forget about it. We did it in the graveyard!"

Taking it for what it is - warts and all - I did too, Stock. Even though some of the warts were huge, and had big ole hairs growing out of them

I liked it enough when I first saw it, but over time (like Ray and Joe) the bloom just fell off the rose.

I do think I'd have warmer feelings for it if I didn't know the stage version and didn't know that at certain times Bill Condon was actually recreating Supremes album covers, tv performances, etc. Even the part where Michelle breaks off her nails to get a job there is straight out of a Supremes biography. The comparisons to the Supremes were always there; I'm not sure what possessed him to make this movie into their biopic.

PRS - I kind of wondered if that angle was the only way it finally got made. I didn't really like it, but let it just exist. Throwing in the Jacksons, though, literally dropped my jaw!

OMG, I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THAT. The Campbell Connection, right?

In the show, the Supremes actually exist. They are mentioned and everything. In the movie, the Dreams ARE the Supremes, at least to the extent that the Supremes don't exist and their story has been glued on to the story that was already there.

Another thing I don't understand (in a Chekov's gun kind of way) is why earlier on Curtis says, "I WAS married." Who cares? It's that kind of extraneous detail that adds nothing that the screenplay is full of.

Wikipedia says that David Geffen called for the the parallels to e more defined in the film, so I guess he's as much to blame as Bill Condom.
