I've avoided commenting since I haven't had time to read the entire thread until now. The concept of a third board isn't a new one. It has been floating around in various forms since shortly after the creation of the OT board.
I favor the creation of a third board, but not necessarily one which prohibits anyone from participating. Whether the third board would be dubbed a Student Board, an Adult Board, or a Retirement Home, I like the idea of creating a third place which would give posters a greater choice of where to gravitate and congregate. Were there a Student Board, for instance, I would still be inclined to glance at the threads and perhaps participate in threads where I had something to offer. I would not feel as inclined to be irritated by or comment upon, say, threads complaining about mean parents not allowing ______ (fill in the blank), as I am when they show up in large volume on the OT board. (I am stating my gut level reaction to such threads, not making a judgement as to whether they have a right to exist...).
I see the idea of a third board as something that could actually nurture a greater sense of community among the people who gravitate there. The Adult Smoking Thread was an example of the type of phenomenon to which I refer. I was never active in that thread, but from casual observation, it seems that the people who were inclined to post there created a community of adults. That is not to say that all adults on the board chose to post in that thread, nor is it to say that no "kids" were welcome there. It just created an environment where certain people from a certain demographic were inclined to settle in.
I believe that if there was to be a Student OT Board (or a Young Adult Board...whatever) and an Adult OT Board (there *has* to be a better name that doesn't have that lingering connotation of potential sleaziness...) where no one was prohibited from participating on any board, would just serve to enrich the variety of the experience available on BWW.com. Just as I am now more of an OT person than a Main Board person, I still read and participate on both, but I am most "at home" when OT. The same phenomenon would happen were the OT board to subdivide... posters would settle in where they are most comfortable, but could still be a presence in the other places.
My vision of this suggestion is NOT to imply that older adults are better or more interesting than young adults (or younger) because that just isn't true...each group just tends to have a different focus. I see no harm in creating environments which create a comfort zone for different groups to discuss OT topics.

On Monday, 2/21, I posed the following question.
If you are over 18 years of age, here's an informal poll question for you...
Would you be willing to pay a nominal amount, annually, to access an Adults ONLY BWW message board? Payment would be via verifiable valid credit card…
…Please email/PM your response to me. There is no need to go public with your personal preference.
This is my own idea, and it is not endorsed by BWW.com, at least not yet anyway!
Well, as of this morning, here is where polling stands:
For: 21
Against: 22
It's not clear that all of the "Against" votes are age eligible to have their votes recorded.
Polling will continue for an indefinite period.
If you haven’t voted yet, but would like to, please post on the poll thread, or send a PM to me.
If you are one of the underage posters (or those who love them) who repeatedly posted your opinions, please be advised that the quantity of your posts has no value in the poll. If you haven’t noticed, you’ve made you point.
The closeness of tally to date tells me there is sufficient interest among the adults to explore a pay-for-access message board for folks of legal age.
Rob, I'll be sending some revenue-generating ideas to you shortly.

Just to be completely fair, do you know for certain that all the "for" voters are over 18? Wouldn't want to be doubting only the votes on one side.
But never mind. "Polling will continue for an indefinite period" sounds like "Polling will continue until I get the results I want" to me. And I've already said more than my share. :P

Plumsie,
1. Yes, all the "for" votes are over 18.
2. Yes, you've already said more than your share.

i've been following this thread but i haven't posted. i'm not going to rehash what many people have already said, but there's a simple solution to this. if there are people who strongly want to segregate, then they can join this new board, and everyone else can just ignore its existence. let them do what they want.
i also second, or third, or whatever the idea that what's so great about this site is that it's FREE!
oh, and for that matter, i vote NO.

Anyway, why shouldn't those under 18 be allowed to vote for this? It still kind of effects them. Is it because you know they'd all say no? Probable.
And yes Plum...indefinitely = until the yes' are more than the no's, the polling will continue.

It's true that under-18 posters will be affected, but I still understand the age limit on poll voting. Under-18 kids are affected by real voting, too. Under-18ers have almost no interest in voting "yes"- they can't use the new board if they do. People over 18 can go either way, so it's appropriate for them to be the voters on this plan.
And I bet I can guess Ga's vote...

If this were to happen,
Nothing would be taken away from anyone under 18.
There would simply be another board for those over 18 to go, should they choose.
Those that do would still have the ability to post on any of the free access boards.
Those under 18 would not be deprived of the company of the adults who post on the free access board.

Posted: 2/27/05 at 1:32pmJose'- A lot of people in the industry and fans are just "lurkers" and don't register for the site. This means they won't be able to access your adult only board. I still don't get the point of this board. What are you going to talk about? Having sex with actors??!!! I still vote NO!
