Question for you legal folks out there ... if the rest of the Klan, I mean family, says they won't return, can't they be sued for breach of contract?

A&E knew all about "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson feelings toward gays when it hired him -- because the guy openly preached that gays were going to hell years before the series started.

Take a look at the video (above) of a 2010 sermon at Berean Bible Church in Pennsylvania ... it's pretty much your typical bible-thumping drill. Phil calls gay people shameful, perverse, heartless, faithless, senseless God haters ... destined for the burning pits of hell.

So with that backdrop ... A&E hired Robertson ... then allowed him to do an interview with GQ where it HAD to know the reporter would ask questions about his feelings toward gays ... and then when he answered honestly A&E punished Robertson.

Robertson may be misguided, but A&E is being dishonest for feigning shock about something it definitely knew all about.

Nine million is impressive but it doesn't make them more popular than anything else out there. Far from it.

That video is...terrible. Maybe they told him not to mention his homophobia, though.

I'm tired of GLAAD jumping on things. Why couldn't they just let it come out and happen on its own? They made it a gay issue, when in truth, the whole thing is a big mess. I found the race comments more offensive, as his views on gays are taught in most Sunday school classes, but now this has become a polarizing thing and all about his religious beliefs.

GLADD is like PETA, they jump on everything and are offended by everything. I agree, it's a whole big mess. Honestly, I don't even know what that show is about, but his comments were unacceptable.

Well said Jersey Girl. I agree completely.

I love a conversation on sexuality but not when it involves people's religious beliefs. Frankly it insulting to be dragged into a conversation were I'm dealing with 10,000 year old text. Those race comments were shocking, did he literally live in the movie Song of the South?

A&E has some explaining to do...

I don't think we have to make it a competition; I think both comments were equally sh^tty. And I don't necessarily agree that we should just sort of shrug off the homophobic comments because that's what's half of America still believes or because that's what they teach in many churches or whatever. That's one of the reasons why I think churches are kinda sh^tty. You want to see people lose their minds up over something somebody says just try saying churches are sh^tty out loud anywhere in America.

I've been following this thread all day but I have not responded because many of my thoughts on the matter have already been expressed by other board members, but I would definitely like to take the time out to point out my favorite post from this thread it is pure genius!

I get that, JerseyGirl. I'm not shocked myself so much as do tired of having to listen to people defend this crap. And I'm not suggesting anyone here is defending him. I'm thinking more of the media and the occasional right-wing nutjob on Facebook that I'd missed when hiding all the people I don't care to read about.

Good grief, people are so polarized on this. So, for the record: I'm African-American, and I wasn't offended by the comments, and neither were my parents. Why? The guy was dirt poor back in the day (and admits he was "white trash") so it's pretty unlikely that the black people he interacted with didn't talk to him about how the white man kept them down, and yeah- people sang while working in the fields. I know this from my dad and uncles who talk about picking cotton in the fields as kids in the south. As far as the comments about homosexuality and bestiality and terrorism being mentioned in the same sentence-- it's a simple deal in Mr. Robertson's mind, I'm sure. He has said he believes that homosexuality is a sin, and referenced 2 Corinthians 6:9. If you don't believe in the BIble... fine. Don't believe in it... I'm not going to shove it down your throat and I don't do that to my friends who are atheist, Jewish, and Muslim. (Unless we are having a theological debate, which we do every so often) He does, and Biblically, all sin is sin, none better than the rest.
