What's interesting to me is that his comments about gays are getting far more attention than his comments about African-Americans in the pre Civil Rights south. According to him, "the blacks" were "happy working in the fields," "they liked singing and dancing", and in the "pre-entitlement, pre-welfare" era, everyone was happy. Oh, he also claims to have never once seen any racism growing up.

I don't understand why that hasn't warranted more discussion.

Either way, I don't understand why anyone is surprised or shocked this piece of white trash is a racist homophobe. All you need to do is take one look at the guy and you can realize that.

To me, his comments about "pre-entitlement blacks" are just wrong, skewed, uninformed, biased opinions about a time in history. His comments about gay men are about his feelings toward people just being who they are. Both are obscene, but both are different.

Good point, Wynbush. I didn't mean to suggest one set of comments was any "worse" than the other, just that I found it interesting which ones were getting more play in the media.

That could be either because the civil rights comments came out later, after the gay comments and after A&E's response, so to the media, it's just another thing he said but not the thing that resulted in his suspension, which is big news to them.

Also, lots of people are perfectly happy to jump on the "queers try to ruin everything" bandwagon, so the whole free-speech BS is getting lots of play. If he'd just made the comments about African-Americans, his supporters would probably be a lot quieter.

Paula's statements/actions weren't rooted in anything Biblical, though. That's the key difference.

The second something related to Christianity is even the slightest bit "threatened," that's when people spring into action.

^ Totally agree with that. My mom and dad were defending the Duck Dynasty guys, claiming that now we can't bad mouth gays at all. No, you can, but the person has to deserve it. Like if I find someone a jerk, I'm going to think that, regardless of sexual orientation.

I made the point to my mom that if someone was being rude to her religious beliefs, she would be offended and complain. That got her to see my point a little more.

Here's the way to explain it to someone who thinks his religious freedom is being undermined: Imagine a guy got a job at a huge bookstore that had a mostly devout Christian clientele, sold mainly Christian books and gifts, but also had a very small section from other religions. He happens to be Pagan himself. Now imagine a devout Christian customer that spent a boatload of money regularly in said store asked him what he thought of a particular item marketed for a Christian holiday. He goes off on a rant about it being highly offensive (since Christian holidays were all taken from Pagan ones), historically inaccurate and just ridiculously stupid to believe there's a man in the sky listening to people's problems. If the customer complained, this dude would lose his job. Same deal. It doesn't mean he can't say it. It's just bad for the bottom line.

"Everyone needs to leave Phil Robertson alone for expressing his beliefs. I think it’s so hypocritical how the LGBT community expects every single flippen person to agree with their life style. This flies in the face of what makes America great – people can have their own beliefs and own opinions and their own ways of life. Everyone needs to treat others like God would, with love. It goes both ways. I hate how the LGBT community says it’s all about 'love' and 'equality.' However, if you don’t agree with their lifestyle, they spread the most hate. It is so hypocritical it makes my stomach turn. They need to learn how to respect others’ opinions and not just jump to the conclusion that everyone who doesn’t support homosexuality and gay marriage is homophobic. They take the easy way out every time anyone speaks out about their beliefs on the Bible. If I were Duck Dynasty, I would take my show to another channel. So much disrespect."
