Ed O'Neil from "Modern Family" said that Sue Sylvester as "one note" character and said she didn't deserve to win the Emmy. "I love Jane, honestly I do,” he was quoted as saying. “I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. [Sue Sylvester] is just a one-note character.” According to the magazine, he went on to say that he believed his on-screen wife, Sofia Vergara (a.k.a. Gloria), should have taken home the statue. ”Sofia is just so, so funny,” O’Neill continued. “I don’t think people realize how hilarious she is. She’s so sharp with her wit, it’s amazing.”
I really like Jane and Sofia, but I kind of think Sofia should have won too. What do you all think?

I don't think Sue is a one note character. She has depth that she doesn't always let others see. Like when she rallied for glee club during the season finale. And when she's with her sister. That's hardly one note.
And Jane won the award - not Sue.
I'm glad to see Ed behind his costars but this isn't right
I do enjoy Glee and love jane lynch, but I have to agree that her character HAS gotten a bit repetitive....I think Sofia is just brilliant on Modern Family. I do think she deserves an Emmy! I'm sure there is one in her future...
Of course Al Bundy would pull a Kanye in favor of the actor with the bigger boobs.
People are reporting this as him slamming Jane and he's not. He's stating his opinion, and while a bit disrespectful, he's not ATTACKING the woman like people are saying.
I think that Sue HAD a lot of depth in the first season, which she won for. Now, in the second, it's one note. And it's not her fault, it's the writers and people in charge of the show. Glee sucks now.
Sofia Vegara is genius in Modern Family...but so is the whole cast. The whole show is a team effort and that's what makes it Modern FAMILY. Eric Stonestreet definitley deserved the Emmy because his character would steal every scene he was in. Sofia doesn't do that very often. Jane, in Glee, does.
And honestly, who the hell believes that Ed O'Neil watches Glee?

I agree, especially after this season.
If Sofia ever does win an Emmy, she should give a great big shout-out to Charo - her entire shtick was Charo's first!
I think Sofia is great, but that was a bit rude of Ed to say.
I do think Jane Lynch was deserving last year, but does not deserve to repeat this year from what Glee has given her so far.
I'd be elated if Jane Krakowski won.
I think he's right on the money...about both things.
Although, Vergara's time will come.

This type of talk occurs constantly within the industry, but it's a different thing to make it public. Pretty classless, in my book.
"And honestly, who the hell believes that Ed O'Neil watches Glee?"
B/c he publicly gave an opinion of the show's most popular character.

To my incredulity, an astonishing number of old gay men watch Glee. Why should Ed O'Neil be any different?

He's right. But, as with every problem on Glee, it's not her fault; it's the writers.
I disagree. Regardless of your opinion of Glee, Jane Lynch has done good work her entire career, and the character of Sue Sylvester is finally getting her the acclaim she's deserved for years. And honestly, I think Sofia Vergara's character can be pretty one-note too with the sassy Latina routine. I love both shows, but I can see the rationalization- Sue Sylvester is an iconic role, and Gloria just isn't.

What episode was submitted for the Emmy voters for Sofia Vergara?
While naturally I doubt voters just vote on the episode/s submitted for any category, the fact is "The Power of Madonna" was just a brilliant episode for Jane Lynch and the writing and acting for Sue in that episode was at the top of its game and I can see why she was given that Emmy.
Sofia submitted "Not In My House"

I have to salute Ed for plugging for his costar and never once whining that he himself was utterly ignored by the Emmys.
Didn't "The Power of Madonna" come out after the emmy's? I remember them announcing that Sue would be getting a song at the Emmy's after she won...I may be thinking of something else, though...
I am pretty sure Jane Lynch submitted "Wheels" which was the episode that revealed another side to her, being that she was a caring sister to her mentally disabled sister, and not just a monster.

Interesting to look back at what Gold Derby had to say when predicting the Emmys in August:
"Sofia Vergara either isn't sure how the process works or simply is not interested in winning an Emmy this year. Her performance in her chosen episode ("Not in My House") is negligible, to say the least. And Vergara has some episodes in the can that make her very competitive."
"Maybe this Madonna tribute episode is silly and pointless. But does that matter? She hits it out of the park, practically munching on the scenery as the crazy Madonna-loving Cheerios coach, not to mention the shot-for-shot remake of the classic 1990s hit "Vogue." It will be a huge upset if Jane Lynch doesn’t win this category."
Gold derby Predictions
To me, O'Neil was just trying to build up a colleague, and chose his words poorly. That said, if he finds Sue Sylvester to be a one-note character, he certainly hasn't watched much Glee, particularly the 'Wheels' episode. I think you need to watch Vegara's work over a season to truly appreciate it, and that doesn't lend itself to the Emmy process.
Lynch submitted "The Power of Madonna."
I don't think it's particularly classy to say that about a fellow actor's win, talk about raining on Jane Lynch's parade. I wouldn't want someone who allegedly respects me to go out in public and say I wasn't deserving of the award I won on my own. I also think it's a slap in the face to Julie Bowen who was also nominated that year.
Lynch is ridiculously funny, I think she deserved her Emmy. Vergara is funny but I actually want Jane Krakowski to win some time, she's incredibly underrated.

To me, Sue Sylvester is a one note character and that is why Jane Lynch deserves the award. She takes that one note character and makes her interesting. I don't think Jane has a lot to work with in the material, but she rises above what's written for her.

Jane has also done terrific work for years as Charlie Sheen's therapist on "Two and a Half Men". Their scenes were always highlights.
