I hate Hostel.
The kids in my Spanish class kept talking about it.
I kept gagging.
I hate gory toture like that.
I agree with FOAnatic, the man has issues and needs to be put away.

*********POSSIBLE SPOILERS***********
I just read an interview with Roth where he objects to people labeling his movies "torture porn". Hostel 2 contains a scene in which poor Heather Matarazzo is hung naked upside down over a naked woman in a bathtub. The women cuts Heather so blood pours over her in the tub as she sexually gratifies herself...sounds like torture porn is a pretty good description to me.
Roth goes on in the interview to explain the "social commentary" of the Hostel films. I would have more respect for the man if he called the movie what it was...a misogynistic geek show for gore hounds.

That article said:
And it really shows how Eli has continued to mature as an artist.
The man is many things. One thing he will NEVER be is an artist.

Ok, first, gotta defend taz, and say that nothing is wrong with him.
Maybe, FOA, you are the one with something wrong. If is fine for you to not like the film style...I don't either...I got nauseated reading the thread if that says anything about me. However, while I place little value on those films, many do. That doesn't make me right, or them right, that just makes us individuals. I don't see the big draw to them, but, one of my best friends doesn't see the draw to musicals.
Next, to say that he deserves to be put away is not cool. If he is disturbed (I have no idea if he is or not), then what would you prefer? Him to play out his fantasies on film where no one is actually hurt? Or would you rather he actually turned his fantasies into reality and hurt someone? Personally, I think he's just someone who has a HIGH tolerance for gore, and can respect it.

"Butch learned so much from Hostel SM."
I like how you used my initials in that sentence. As for Butch, I haven't seen him since he boarded that train. Perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of him this weekend?

I would prefer he get psychologically evaluated and then seek much therapy afterwards. This man should not have the venue of film to spread his ideas and show others it's ok.
The same can be said about pedophilia. Would you rather have a pedophile express his feelings through film...or seek therapy so that he is not able to harm children?
The fact of the matter is...if you, as a human, get enjoyment out of watching another human, fictional or not, get tortured and mutilated...there is something wrong there. It's plain and simple.
I have nothing against thrillers. I do have something against senseless gore.

Nothing is plain and simple in life. Period. The only point here Foa is that "senseless" in regards to art is subjective.
We can both argue that we do or don't enjoy this type of film, but the fact is that we are each entitled to our own opinions.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 6:56amso, who should we nominate as national film czar? this would be the person who decides who can and cannot make films. y'know, kinda like a national censor. it'd be great because whatever party was in power would be able to completely control the content of film while in power. i think that's something that is long overdue.

I do like a uniform...with a little hat.
Just for the record...I don't think Eli should be silenced. He can make all the crappy films he wants.
I do think this movie will start another debate about the uselessness MPAA. It's ridiculous that it received an R rating.

Eli Roth is disgusting and I hate his films. Ten years from now he will be doing the same types of movies he is doing now. The man makes a ton of money making these types of movies and we go to see them. As much as I despise him, he has that right and because I feel the way I feel about him, I wont see his movies. I can't stand Eli Roth, but I hate censorship more than Eli Roth.
In my opinion, I would rather see nudity than violence. I loved the movie SHORTBUS. This film was not rated at all due to the sex and nudity in the film. I find it disturbing that people in this country have more of a problem with a film like SHORTBUS than they do with HOSTEL II (which is Rated R, so by the MPAA's own rules HOSTEL II is more accepted than a film like SHORTBUS) This just makes me shake my head.
We need a sex crazed version of Eli Roth. A new Peter Greenway or Ken Russell.
I also have to question these actors. Heather Matarazzo and ROger Bart are both good actors who have done some really good work. What would make them do a film like this? WHat kind of growth or experience do they think they are gaining? I mean, we don't even care or get to know the characters.
If I were an actor I would rather do a graphic nude scene in a indy/art film than a torture scene or a overly violent death scene any day. So, lets review. Nudity is indecent and disgusting and will corrupt children. Violence is okay and natural.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 9:40amWell the great thing about Hostel II is you get the nudity AND violence all in one package.

Well, Bijou isn't exactly a big name.
It was probably either this or some straight to dvd horror cheapie.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 9:48amI wonder how much Heather was paid to be hung upside down naked...
