I'm going to be an English Literature major, Tiff, though I've taken an equal number of classes in that and Poli Sci so far. I'll probably end up being a Poli Sci minor no matter what, and if I don't do honors I might take on a music minor, too.
Like I said before... Raggy, darling. No. That crap is not "writing style." It's nothing. It makes no sense. It needs to GO AWAY! Proper English shouldn't be something you just to do get good grades; that's idiocy. Don't you care one wit about what people thing? Poor linguistic skills make you look stupid. I can't imagine that's whta anybody wants.

Priest -
Guess I am an exception...though I am more moderate than conservative
....and nicely put Shira....
Of course there are excpetions to every rule, but, in general, it is a proven fact.
It's the thought that goes into the post that counts. If someone can't be bothered to at least put some thought into the presentation of their post, why should anyone take it seriously? Sure, it's someone's choice if they skip over the post or try to decipher it, but then they risk missing out on a potentially valid and intelligent argument slathered in non-sensical blather. (And for the record, there are MANY who TyPe iN aLtErNaTiNg CaPs AnD yOu NeEd NoT lOoK mUcH fArThEr ThAn SeVeRaL uSeRnAmEs To SeE tHiS!)
Stick, that sector of people represents those who spend a life buried inside of a textbook and the world of academia - they never go out to the real world. Yes, this type of individual is most often liberal and more highly educated, but no common sense to save their soul.
Type, not all people want to be taken seriously when they post a thought. They are relaxing, venting, etc. May drive some crazy in here, but move on to the next post.
Like I said before, our minds were created for intelligence, and we should strive to use them to their best ability. It's always nice when someone sounds educated and able to be read.
I cannot believe the whole republicans/democrats thing was pulled into this one too. I say use the mind God gave you, whether liberal or conservative.
Hardly. I imagine Democrats are more cultured and well-rounded. Notice the vast Democratic majority on this board and many other cultural, travel and art boards versus Republicans. Hardly just burying one's self in a textbook all the time. Plus if Republicans were going out into the real world, then surely they would have a more tolerant worldview instead of trying to suppress the rights of others and being blinded to other cultures and beliefs under the guide of conversative patriotism.
But I digress. This thread is about bad grammar on this board.

"Maybe y'all aren't typing correctly..."
So, BsO- is y'all a real word? It sure seems easier to type "you all" then it is to type y'all.
I agree with you Shira. And to mispell things on purpose is bad, but if you hit the e before the i in friends; I don't think it's gonna be a life and death situation. And I agree that some of the internet talk is spilling into the "real world" but, it's an individual problem and to each his own. I only control myself and my grade, therefore, I re-read my papaers and have them proofread several times before turning them in. If people to choose to be lazy and not make sure everything is good, then it's their own fault. You can't blame other people for writing "2day" on the computer and then tell the person that wrote it, that it's their fault that so-and-so wrote "2day" on their paper and therefore they got a bad grade.
Same goes for "here" and hear" and "there" and "their"... Most people come to these boards to relax...when someone types. "She stole there books from them"...I think people shouldn't get soo defensive. We all know what that person meant.

I think we're talking about two different things here, folks.
Issue #1 is typos- careless errors and misspellings commonly made when typing quickly. This is where the "I'm relaxing" argument makes sense- it's nice if double-check before you click "post," but it's understandable if you don't. That's why there's an "edit" button.
Issue #2 is net-speak, which I find to be unforgivable. That means substituting "u" for "you" or "plz" for "please," for instance. That's what I'm objecting to here, the extra moments of decoding it takes to get through sentences that are made up of these mutilations of words. There's no need to use these things, and they're of no use to anyone. They just make your posts harder to understand. Since hopefully you're trying to communicate something with your posts, don't you want to facilitate that as much as possible? If you want your post to be understood by as many people as possible as quickly as possible, just write in standard English. It's not that hard.
And that thar common sense told us we'd bettah make up some lahs bout that eye-racky boy ovah der in that thar miduhl east place. Cuz them thar heathens ain't luvin the lawd Jeezus Krast, just lahk dem stoopid perfessers at the kuh-moonity kalej ah wint 2 fer 1 suh-mestah befo' ah had to drop out on account uh my paw needed me to work the farm...cuz that's all common sense.

Fine, then, Raggy...
I shall skip over your posts so I do not have to deal with the idiocy....
OK, while in your eyes there may not be a huge difference between you're and your; too, to, and two; etc....in other people's eyes, there is a HUGE difference.
There is a big dog here - Hay un perro grande aquí.
Their is a big dog here - Su es un perro grande aquí.
While I get this is English, see the MAJOR change the wrong word can make?

As for Emcee's last post, just reading it through the first time, I found 2 mistakes, and then I found another one...I wasn't even looking for them. How odd to make such mistakes!! Do not critisize others until you are perfect.
Why did you change the English sentences into Spanish?
And secondly, whether you wrote "There is a big dog here" or "Their is a big dog here", you are going to know what it means. And since I used the word "whether"- If I said "The whether today is soo cold, I would put on sweat pants." is that so much different than if I said "The weather today is soo cold, I would put on sweat pants."
You obviously know what I am talking about no matter how I spelled it. If you choose to react over such a trivial thing, then thats ur problem...
*Oh, let me fix that*
If you choose to react over such a trivial thing, then thats YOUR problem.
Chicago, I see what you're saying, but re: Plum's recent post. Relaxing and venting is different than making a conscious effort to present a dumbed down version of a message. Typos are natural and inevitable; text talk is not.
If only I was more willing to use my Block feature, I wouldn't have to deal with the pains and sorrows of sifting through 2 much of da crap dat ppl rite on herre that may aktually make cents!
Type, I would hardly consider this board a well-rounded board - if people don't agree with your liberal way of thinking, you brand them as idiots, etc. etc. etc. Before you preach about tolerance of views, etc. you need to look in your mirror - it will probably crack.
The majority of both democrats and republicans are well rounded individuals who most often contribute to their favorite causes in whatever way they are able to. The extremes on both sides are a minority.

Raggy,
I think you are confused about what we are talking about...
Again Raggy, look at Plum's post. There's a major difference between the odd typo and consistent grammar mistakes.
Like I said before, our minds were created for intelligence, and we should strive to use them to their best ability. It's always nice when someone sounds educated and able to be read.
I cannot believe the whole republicans/democrats thing was pulled into this one too. I say use the mind God gave you, whether liberal or conservative.
I would never want to be stereo-typed an illiterate Republican!
Type - I do agree with you regarding people making dumbed-down posts (like the recent ones regarding smell of shampoo, toothpaste, etc.). I consider that type of post to be in a category of its own that even I would find offensive - but I choose to quickly go on to the next post!
Actually, Chicago, I have never branded a Republican (including yourself) an idiot unless he/she proved to be idiotic, regardless of political view, and god knows there are plenty of idiotic Dems on here as well.
But at least I haven't stooped to personal attacks, and it's a bit rich I get some passive aggressive sniping from you when I was under the impression we were having a more respectful discussion that you imply that Dems are unwilling to have with someone of differing viewpoints.

And I am warning everyone right now, good is an adjective and well is the adverb. Confuse them, and I will releash my wrath upon you!
I speak English well.
I speak English with a good accent.
