But I thought we needed to "give him a chance"? I thought he would be "good for the gays"?

I wonder if Broadway Concierge or Petra will attempt to defend this, or will they finally admit he's a homophobic bigot, like we've been saying all along.

You were saying?

Did you bother to read?

"Leaving those protections, of course, does not preclude another executive order that would roll back gay rights in other areas. Mr. Trump could, for example, still enshrine a religious freedom provision in federal policy.

Gay rights advocates seemed unimpressed. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said Mr. Trump was setting a low bar by claiming credit for not overturning the actions of his predecessor.

“L.G.B.T.Q. refugees, immigrants, Muslims and women are scared today, and with good reason,” Mr. Griffin said. “Donald Trump has done nothing but undermine equality since he set foot in the White House.”

Mmm, right. Anything could happen. Anybody could do anything. I'm more action- and results-based than you are, it seems.

I maintain that you should indeed give President Trump a chance. You started this thread because you were utterly convinced by some progressive rag that the President would issue an order "to roll back" Obama's federal protections. This has now been proven false.

Seems like nothing is ever good enough for you.

Concierge, I wouldn't get too on your high horse about this- one way or the other, he has pledged to discriminate against LGBT people. In September of 2016, then candidate Trump pledged to sign the First Ammendment Defense Act, which will allow business to discriminate under the guise of "religious freedom". This isn't coming out of a "progressive rag"- it's a pledge he personally made and given that Congress is GOP controlled, it's a matter of when, not if.

Given this idiot's behavior in the first 10 days in office, I think he's blown whatever chance you think he deserves. Even if you agree with him, he so clearly does not understand what he is doing. What kind of moron writes and enforces an executive order on immigration without even bothering to run it by White House counsel, State, or DHS? Setting aside the merits of the ban, it's a stupidly amateur move. How long do we have to keep giving him a chance?

Amazing to watch someone get on a high horse because this indefensible monster is not (now) doing one specific reprehensible thing that he previously said he would do.

Would one Trump supporter please define what a "chance" for him is? Because he's consistently been the same repugnant, hateful, anti-intellectual animal every day since he came into the public eye decades ago.

Amazing how defending somebody who was falsely accused of something is called "getting on a high horse." adamgreer tried contributing to the image of Trump as a demonic monolith; I merely pointed out that this was a baseless claim to add.

I'm equally curious to see if anybody can hold a healthy discussion about the merits of Trump's presidency—which I maintain has not been hateful in the slightest—without using asinine terms like "repugnant," "stupid," "idiot," and "moron."

Ok fine, I won't call him an idiot or a moron. But that doesn't change the fact that his first ten days, by any metric, have been an embarrassment. An absolute disaster of an executive order rollout, dozens of large-scale to massive protests, a Press Secretary who has clearly lied about petty and eminently provable facts, and multiple Cabinet nominees who are questionable at best.  Again, even if you like him, he is so far doing very poorly.

And as far as I'm concerned, it is hateful to illegally detain legal residents of this country because of their country of origin. What otherwise is the rationale for detaining and handcuffing a 5 year old child or elderly people? Or detaining someone who has worked for our army for years as a translator? The rationale doesn't exist- and thus far the Trump administration hasn't done a very good job showing that there is one. How many more chances should they get to get it right? Meanwhile, while they try to figure it out, people who have done nothing other than be born in the wrong country sit in detention, where CBP agents refuse to even let them speak to a lawyer. Is that not hateful?

It was the Washington Post who originally reported the story, with CNN claiming a source as well. Or are those the "progressive rags" that you refer to?

And I fully maintain the man is reprehensible. He just fired his acting attorney general who likely won't even HAVE that job after this week anyway because she dared to uphold the Constitution, not his agenda. Are you going to defend those actions, too?

This is a hateful man in the Oval. This is a man who will do what it takes to silence anyone who disagrees with him and has labelled the media "the opposition".

It is crystal clear who he is and what he stands for and he is fooling no one - - - and that bothers him to no end. That is why he does what he does and says what he says at the expense of any regard to facts or for that matter integrity.

This is a man who cannot be trusted. His every move, his every word should be scrutinized at the very highest level.

I have never in my lifetime witnessed a president so hated and so reviled not only on a national level but on a global scale.

That fact speaks in and of itself and his defenders are ostriches with their heads planted firmly in the sand.

They lack any kind of integrity or moral compass - - - they mirror the man that they elected into office and until one of his executive orders directly affects them and their well being they just won't get it.

I'm sure he absolutely intended to roll back the LGBTQ protections, but wanted it to happen in a shock and awe manner. We know that Drumpf doesn't like being scooped. Rogue POTUS Staff likely bought a reprieve, but we can and should expect them to try this again sooner rather than later.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Theatre Nerd, while I have nothing but the deepest of contempt for Trump and his ilk, I think your rhetoric does you a disservice.  There are a lot of people that are all-in with everything he is doing.  And I think it behooves you to try and understand that.

Many of his supporters have never met a Muslim.  Have never had them as neighbors, have never had them as classmates or as classmates for their kids.  They view them as outsiders much as the WASPs did about the Irish, the Irish did about the Italians, the Italians did about the eastern Europeans, etc etc.  Except that many of these people are identifiable by their outward appearance.  They believe what the hear or read and they choose to hear or read what agrees with their preconceived notions.  As do many of us.

And it is so easy to generalize as this Muslim ban does.  None of the countries included have people that perpetrated any terrorist attacks in the US.  None of these countries included were the genesis of the 9/11 terrorists.  Most of the terrorist attacks were home grown citizens.  And many terror attacks were homegrown, non Muslim, good old USA boys - like Timothy McVeigh and Dylan Roof.  But acknowledging that means that we haven't really scared away the bogeyman.  And we can't accept that.  So we set up straw men and rail against the "others."

There is a lot of discriminatory thinking in the world.  And that just keeps getting worse.

But I would read a little and try to wrap your head around the reality that there are lots of people that truly believe in what Trump is doing.  And they are not all bad people.  They are scared and they are over simplifying the world.  And their world is very small and insulated.  And TV, radio, internet feeds their fears.

That's what I fear.  I have probably not done a very good job of explaining this, but it's complicated and I hope others will pick this up and do a better job.

Read my last post on the "coming impeachment" thread and then get back to me.

Speaking for myself, I have never thought that Trump was personally anti-LGBT or really a social conservative at all. I think he'll throw a few bones to his base, but I doubt it's something he prioritizes. His evil lies elsewhere.

The ones who voted for him are adults, and are responsible for the consequences of their choices. The relevant information was available for us all to see. They don't get a pass.

I don't support the death penalty, so I oppose actually killing Trump voters. Those are about the kindest words I can muster.

62 million Americans were conned by Trump, for a variety of reasons.  Some really are deplorable people, but most are not.  The numbers don't matter.  What does matter is that as many of these folks as possible come to realize they were conned, and turn against him.  Otherwise, all the rallies and marches may not accomplish much.  We need folks in red states to speak out to their representatives.  I don't see how vitriolic rhetoric will persuade anyone.  Make no mistake, I am angry and frustrated.  But I need to put that aside in order to accomplish what needs to be done.

Right on Mar and MadBrian, the worst way to try and change peoples minds is to call them names, say they are dumb or being lectured by some pampered celebrity. All that will do is turn people off and have them double up on their opinions. It backfired badly in the election. Most people are good caring people, if you come to them from a place of love, they still may not agree with you at first, but they will respect you, and that is the first step in education.

Extending the existing protections is just a smokescreen. He's still going to back that so-called "religious freedom" act that will be much, much worse for us. It will mean that people cab put up signs that say "NO GAYS ALLOWED."

We'll know a lot more when Trump announces his SCOTUS nominee this evening.  The two frontrunners probably have little chance of getting past a Dem filibuster.  Both are far to the right of anything resembling mainstream America.  The last thing this country needs is another Scalia on the bench.

No, sorry, these people are grown adults.  They need to own the consequences of their actions.  The information was out there and available to them, they just chose to ignore it and claim that the "media was dishonest" because that's what "the loud man with the colorful personality from the TV show" told them to believe. Please do not try to make it sound like accurate information was somehow unavailable to them. They need to own the monster that they've elected.

"They need to own the monster that they've elected."

Exactly. Trump has made it perfectly clear that his preferred method of leadership would be as a fascist dictator, ultimately limiting most rights to wealthy white heterosexual men. If he were to get his way, he would be just another Mugabe, Stalin, Mussolini, Dada, Pétain, Ceaucescu, Gaddafi, Saud, Duvalier, etc.

Anyone who supported him needs their feet held to the fire, to acknowledge that they willingly supported a dictator wannabe, because they had an irrational, ignorant fear of the word "liberal."

How about we all own this?  Maybe I could have given more money, or volunteered to drive voters to the polls in Pennsylvania, or been better convincing folks of the true evil in Trump.  Maybe we can focus on how to extract ourselves from this nightmare, and I fail to see how vilifying other citizens accomplishes much.  If anyone can provide an example of how such rhetoric ever convinced anyone of anything, I'd love to hear it.

What I posted was not rhetoric, there is not one thing that I wrote in my post that is not true.

His actions speak for themselves.

There is just no way of disputing that. And to call it anything else than what it truly is says a lot to me about the people disputing it and in turn defending him.

His supporters are with him all because everything he has done up until now does not affect them.

Bravo to newintown and adamgreer.
