At least that's what GOP Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona thinks. How out of touch with reality are these people?
Making the case against extending unemployment benefits
^I think that says more about your stingy salary offerings than the abuse unemployment benefits.

Currently in Illinois, unemployment compensation is something like $315 a week. It's better than nothing but not much better.
That's about the same here in NY, Joe.
It can argued from either side but in my case.....
When I was unemployed I would only pull in an equivalent a month to just over what one of my paychecks would be when working. That is an extreme loss in general, and then to have to accept a job making even lower than that just to get off unemployment? Just not feasible if not absolutely necessary, so I can not blame others who are in even lower income brackets making the same decision. Bills have to paid.
But then again, I have seen many people I know abuse the system as well.

One person's 'abuse' is another's 'survival.'
Well the extension didn't go through. Just heard on the news. I think it was Jim Bunning of KY that voted no. Can the President override it with and Exec. decision?
It's not that it didn't go through. Bunning is blocking it with a filibuster. He won't be able to go on forever and it will eventually pass. But it's a dark mark on him and the Republican party...even though many in the GOP are trying to distance themselves from him.
Bunning's hometown paper wrote a scathing editorial. Here's an excerpt:
" As long as Republicans were in charge, Sen. Jim Bunning was OK with trading a surplus for a deficit. He voted to put two wars, tax cuts and a Medicare drug benefit on the nation's credit card.
Now that Republicans are no longer in charge, Bunning is drawing the line on deficit spending. He's doing it in a way that shows callous contempt for the more than one in 10 working Kentuckians whose jobs disappeared in the economic meltdown."

Thank you for the clarification Erik. Needless to say, local news didn't go any further than to say he blocked it and made it sound like it was a done deal.
I guess the big thing is that it needs to go through asap for all of those running out of benefits this week.
Edit: Actually last week.

Bunning's "Filibuster" also stops a temporary assistance to unemployed workers where they can get help paying for Cobra coverage. I have a dear friend who just told me last month if it wasn't for that COBRA help, he didn't know what he would do, seeing as how his rent & health insurance was as much as he made in unemployment each month.
But Senator Bunning has a point to make.

Perhaps if Obama didn't pass out cash for clunkers, the government would have money to help the unemployed.
When I saw that Goth was the last responder in this thread, I anticipated a real gem. I was not disappointed.
Maybe if Bush hadn't of fcuked things up in the first place, Goth.
STFU.
Goth are you the blonde on The View? Just wondering.
If they can extend unemployment benefits up to about $75K/year, then I'll totally do that.
Yes Goth, if it wasn't for that damn cash for clunkers program there would be no debt and we would have enough money to extend unemployment benefits. The two unpaid wars and tax cuts didn't have anything to do with it.
You really can't be serious.
He folded because his GOP buddies were turning on him!

Bunning has been an utter lunatic and a failure of a Senator for years; it's just that now his dickishness is really hitting a national stage.
