FAHRENHEIT 9/11 Wins Palm d'or at Cannes!

Michael Moore's new film slamming the Bush administration recieved a 20 minute standing ovation at the Cannes film festival (as record). Not a good sign for Bush. Now we just need to get someone to release it here before the election.
PEACE.

re: 20 MINUTE STANDING O FOR FAHRENHEIT 9/11

Just wait till summer. Apparently there isn't much new in it, more of HOUSEOF BUSH, HOUSE OF SAUD, etc. But it is more powerful because of the compression of details into a short time span, and its use of Iraqi footage that our networks haven't shown (civilian casualities, for example). We have certainly learned the power of the visual in the past month, no? The consensus is: it won't create converts. But it keeps a slow flame under the subj, and may incite many who cold experience Bush bashing fatigue by convention time, let alone November.

i kinda doubt that there's ever many republicans at cannes. even less so at a screening of a michael moore film.

on the other hand, auggie, once the gop slime brigade gets done with it, the whole she-bang might backfire. it is after all (regardless of moore's protestations to the contrary) preaching to the choir, and the dems are going to need to teach that tune to more than just the faithful.

oh but, papa, it's the kind of film that just might get the choir off of their disillusioned asses and into a voting booth--the straw that would indeed break Bush's back.

What I find interesting about the standing ovation at the festival is that a majority of the audience are not even American, let alone Republicans. It really illustrates the feeling the rest of the world has towards Bush.

The only people that like him are the rednecks and conservatives in this country. And I bet some of them don't exactly like him, but are either gung ho Republicans or living in absolute fear.

or, jrb, your choir will vote kerry, most choirs will...damn commie singers. but it's the middle of the roaders you have to get while not pissing off the absolutists so badly that they decide to sit home.

about 2 million americans saw bowling for columbine, if you assume that no one saw it more than once. that was over a 11 month release period. there are 6 months until the election. he's got no distrubitor as of yet. it's not like it's going into multi-plex release.

even if he gets a distribution deal tomorrow and gets it into theatres the next week, how many americans are going to see it before the election?

and sueleen, whenever america does anything the world gets pissed off. hell, the russians still haven't forgiven us cheating irina slutskaya out of the gold. and that's a big, big thing to them.

jrb, i don't care one way or the other. in fact, i'd rather it got out because i think ti would actually trigger a backlash against moore and the left. i'm speaking not from a partisan point of view, but from a pragmamtic point of view: without a distribution deal and with 6 months before the election, how many people do you honestly think can see the film?

I agree with Papa -- it won't be competing with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, that Perfect Independence Day Storm flick that is stirring up the Gore and Rupert Murdoch bases. But: the Moore movie will never leave the theaters, even if only in an urban handful (Remember how "Capturing the Friedmans?" played all last summer?), and it will be discussed ad nauseum by the media. Michael will appear at every wienie roast in America that has a camera, so look for his face to be ubiquitous. We live in a culture wherein you needn't see a film to glean its message. Look at the number of folks who know a lot about COLUMBINE without seeing that.

well, jrb, did it ever occur to you that assuming that the movie will mirror the book exactly might cause you to make flawed arguments?

and auggie, i don't think anyone in american doesn't know what the film is already. cnn is even now tracking a family in boise who's ignorant of it's content and plans to kidnap them and force them to watch it so that christianne ammanpour can then interrogate them.

Papa, LOL.

(Don't you want to go up to Ms.Amnanpour and go "kootchy-kootchy-koo!" and see if she musters a giggle? I've tought she was a puppet for years. Or being played by Lily Tomlin.)

LOL--at least you are a funny guy. :)

I don't hesitate to admit that it is indeed possible that Moore is wrong on some of his theories. But even the most wild thoughts make you think. And rethink. And say A LOT about current politics and motivations.

Oh, how I wish Moore would document you so I would finally understand your hardcore defense of this president and his administration.

c'mon, jrb, show me an oil man who doesn't have saudi connections.

auggie, i would settle for whacking her upside the back of the head with a 2x4 just to see her eyes dangling on her cheeks...yum!

come to think of it, i'd like to do the same to moore (and that goes back long before 1997).

it's a personal matter between me and mikey. unfinished business. the vitriol is not related to his movie-making or his clown like speeches (which i contend would go over better if he had a flower that squirted water in his lapel). it's personal.

So do I, but you don't see me in movies. Well, unless you know where to look.

Frankly, I think Kerry should just continue not speaking. Bush/Rove/Rumsfeld's self-immolation is apparently going to just continue apace.

It really illustrates the feeling the rest of the world has towards Bush.

It really illustrates the feeling the rest of the world has towards America... Even before Bush, the majority of the world despised Americans aimply for being American. Granted, the Bush Administration is providing an excellent rallying cry for opposition, but this hatred cannot be tied to any one person or administration.

It existed before and it will after.

Americans, we have to pretend to be Canadians when abroad. It's our only chance. Start practicing your "a-boots" and your "ooots" now.
