After seeing Bowling for Columbine, I really have no interest in any more Michael Moore films.

Hey, the right-wingers own radio, we deserve to own the cinema. Michael Moore may be totally obnoxious but he does have morals and a heart....unlike, say....Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I'm not sure that "morals" would be the appropriate word. I think he exploits people. He uses pain, sadness, and guerilla journalism to promote his films.

Maybe there was a shred of concern there in the beginning, but now... it's all about shock and awe baby.

because "a" has this, "b" deserves that? i'm sketchy of the whole entitlement culture that such a statement connotes.

I worked on a Rage Against the Machine video, directed by Michael Moore. I'm sorry to report that at least on that day, he was a hypocrite. Here's a guy who's supposed to be the champion of the 'little guy' and is opposed to those in 'power'. Well- where do I start?

First, he allowed us no breaks from working, and the work was hard. We're supposed to get a break every 3 hours according to SAG rules. Ok, no breaks. Second, he directed a mob scene to take place in which people were required to do stunts, and trample over each other from bleacher seats. This is also not allowed. Some people got hurt. The murmuring started around the set about the way we were being treated and some people walked off the set. (risking their names being taken and never working again.)

Now he had us working overtime, by a few hours. Many people wanted to leave, but Moore offered us PIZZA instead of money to stay. Finally SAG was called and the reps appeared on the set. He was forced to allow those who wanted to leave to do so, and those who wanted to stay were paid $50 (PLUS THE PIZZA!). Moore didn't give in without an argument.

Anyway, I have no respect for the guy.

Ha. Moore always struck me as a guy I can mostly agree with, but he's so damn annoying I don't even try. He's about ten time too self-satisfied and strident for my taste.

I can't wait to see this film and really hope it is realeased before election time. Although I'm still trying to forgive Michael Moore for his very not-cool Oscar outburst.

papalovesmambo said "i kinda doubt that there's ever many republicans at cannes."

You won't find republicans at anything artistic. Now a monster truck rally or Jerry Fallwell revival meeting or even a kkk meeting they wouldn't miss.

I thought his Oscar outburst was very cool.

I thought his Oscar outburst was self-indulgent crap. He deserved to get booed. If he wants to make a film or write a book about his hatred for the current administration, that's his business. People can choose to view it or not, but to hold an audience captive so he can spew his opinions on everyone is pure manipulation and opportunistic.

I don't think that's fair. There are many republicans who care about the arts, and support it. Have you ever been to a Sunday Matinee? four more years!

One minute folks on here think the Oscars are ****e--the next, people are on here were offended at Moore's speech. What gives?

I do not think either. It was his speech, his time, and it fit his film. I don't hear anyone griping about other Academy Award winners saying something relating to the issues in their film.

Plus, those are the moments that make the Oscars especially entertaining.

Plus, Moore was right! LOL

Opportunistic? Opportunity is NOT a lengthy visitor. Seize the day! People said the same thing about Tim and Susan when they used their Oscar time to urge the Republican administration to not keep HIV positive refugees at Gitmo without representation of any sort (kind of like foreshadowing, no?). People kept telling me "there's a time and a place for everything." Well, it was their time, they had the place, and their outspoken nature brought about real world changes.

four more WARS!

It all stems from this notion that performers should not exercise their right of free speech. Somehow, if you are a model or an actor or a singer, people expect you to stand there and do what THEY want -- but never to have an opinion.

Sometimes, I think Equity feeds this idea, evidenced by concluding some of worst lame-ass contracts!
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

I enjoy the Oscars, but I do believe it is pretty low to take advantage of an unsuspecting captive audience to try and sway with political agendas. Had it been a right-to-lifer, the response on this board would probably been quite different. It reminds me of the rabid right-to-lifers who set up a two-story structure of enormous images of aborted fetuses direcly in front of my university entrance, knowing nearly every student on campus must go in and out on a daily basis. It was impossible to avoid and there was an on-campus day care with children in one of the nearby buildings where children had to pass daily within view of the horrible monstrosity.

If a documentary film about abortion rights had won the academy award for best documentary that year I would have expected the winner to comment on the subject of his/her film. People who were unsuspecting of Michael Moore giving a political speech that was directly related to the film he was receiving his Oscar for were in the dark. It would have been a surprise if he DIDN'T make a comment. And remember there were just as many cheers in the Kodak Theater that night as there were boos.

fortunately the audience mics were all placed near really loud boo-ers.

Actually that makes sense since, from what I've read, many of the boos came from Oscar crew members.

boob-age? am I on the wrong thread?

I think most of the boos in the Kodak theatre that night should have been for the Academy voters.

I agree there were no suprises there... I was watching through my fingers, just as I do when Robbins/Sarandon win anything. Not that I think they shouldn't say anything... I'm just bracing myself for the anger behind it. It's uncomfortable to watch.

Just like watching someone smack a little brat in a supermarket... even if the kid deserves it, often it's still not fun to watch.

But I don't understand why the Academy voters should boo.

I mean...they voted him for the award...they expected a different reaction?
