Anything with Joan Bennett - my favorite film noir heroine - she had a lovely, haplessly wicked, stupid, vulnerable and dangerous quality all at once when she played those roles. Scarlet Street is an underappreaciated classic, I think.

LAURA!!
At 89 minutes this is a caustic, sensual, witty film that would make a great stage musical.

There is a major feature film about the Black Dahlia murder case coming out this year.
I hope all you fans of film noir have seen the movie DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, directed by Carl Reiner, starring Steve Martin.

Out of the Past is a fantastic film.
I'd also recommend The Killers (the '46 version, not the '64 one, though the remake is interesting to watch as a comparison).

I'll throw in some more Out of the Past love!
I had to watch it for a class years ago, and I just loved it!
Jane Greer is such a classic beauty.

It took me awhile to gather some of my favorites, as this genre is not really a favorite of mine. I do have my essentials, however:
M (Peter Lorre)
High Sierra (Bogart and...Lupino, I think)
Murder My Sweet (Dick Powell, still trying to get away from his crooner image)
Lady in the Lake (I think this is one that is shot by the view of the "hero")
Scarlett Street
Third Man (cinematography superior to Citizen Kane, IMO)
Lady From Shanghai
Night of the Hunter would be my all time favorite one though. It fits the Film Noir description by having dark subject matter, and evil characterizations. Who doesn't get creeped out my the animal screaming that Mitchum does when he's injured??
Good Luck finding these, Dame! I know most are on VHS...but on DVD, I am not so sure.

Posted: 3/8/06 at 7:30pmIt's got a great little scene involving a dog and Bogart's character "becoming sorta human" moment. That's what I recall from the movie.
