FIRST cast recording you ever bought or was given?

The first cast recording I ever received was given to me by my Mom, it was in the
form of an L.P. record ..... it was the original cast album of

" MY FAIR LADY " I played it to death, and sang every song - - they of course
were all hits. How I LOVED it.

Fiddler On The Roof! I was seven. After I saw a production put on by those wise, worldly fifth-and-sixth graders at my school, I was bitten by the theatre bug.

The first I bought with my own money was the Les Miserables TAC.

Les Miserables original London cast summer of 1987. I memorized every note and it launched my interest in musical theatre.

I was in 4th grade, and my parents had just seen Mamma Mia in San Francisco. They brought back the recording, and for reasons unknown, I fell in love.
"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

Mine was a copy of "The Secret Garden". I still listen to it to this day, and I got it over 15 years ago.

West Side Story. My aunt and uncle had purchased it and absolutely HATED it. I listened to it once and was hooked. They couldn't understand why I liked it but they were happy to give it to me. I listened to it constantly.

Cats, of course. My Mom bought it for me after I saw the tour. My Fair Lady was the first show I saw where I went out and bought the CD after seeing the show. Guys and Dolls was the next one, I think. Those were regional, though. I'm too young to have seen the original productions, Mister Matt. re: FIRST cast recording you ever bought or was given?

A little perspective: In 4th grade, my brother gave me ABBA's newest album, Voulez-Vous, for my birthday. A vinyl LP. ABBA went on to produce two more albums before they split up.

I remember finding the cassetes of A Chorus Line and Applause in my folks' collection. I can't recall which I heard first, but my life has never been the same since.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Pippin were given to me for Christmas when I was 13 or 14. I also got a single disc CD player that was the size of a DVR. LOL. The first show I bought was Evita, a few months later.

re: FIRST cast recording you ever bought or was given?

It wasn't the Broadway recording but the movie of THE KING AND I.
The first broadway cast recording was FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. All the girls in my circle of friends in high school had a copy of it. I remember we sang songs from it at one of our pajama parties.
I may not know a lot about theater but I know that I love it.

That sounds like MY childhood! (We also used to... attempt... the choreography to CATS.)

re: FIRST cast recording you ever bought or was given?

I was in 4th grade and we saw a touring company's production of "Cats." I was SO obsessed and my grandma bought me the OBCR.

Technically the first cast recording I ever heard was POTO. I was about 3 or 4 and my dad would play it on our house all the time because he was taking my mom to go see it for her birthday. Whenever I'd hear the overture I would run in my room, lock my door, and hide underneath my covers because it absolutely terrified me! Especially when all those girls would friggin' scream...scared the crap out of me.

Well...that's my tragic story. Haha!

re: FIRST cast recording you ever bought or was given?

First I ever received was a record of The Sound of Music.
First I ever bought was the OBC of Parade.
First musical song I ever "bought" (alright downloaded) was "What you Own" from Rent. Or "Living in America" as I thought it to be titled. I was in the airport waiting on a long layover with my troupe coming home from the Thespian Conference. My friends Saum and Sarah started singing that and I had no idea what Rent was. Soon after I fell in love with it.

And just because this I definitely remember:
First CD I ever bought (and it was also the day I got my first portable CD Player) was the soundtrack to Can't Hardly Wait. It's a pretty specific era, but that soundtrack and that movie are simply delightful. I mean, Mr. Jennie Garth and Ms. Love Hewitt as the 'It' Couple gone bad? Marvelous. Plus it features pretty much every actor working today.

Sorry for the tangent. Just got me thinking.

OBC of Chicago. Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach. First show I ever saw on Broadway. Those were the days..

The Wizard of Oz, MSG Cast, when I was 7 or 8.

But the one that got me into theatre was Les Mis, the CSR.

My very first was the soundtrack of "Grease" the movie. The first cast recording that I bought was "Chess."
