What are the similarities between the two? And also, is the song FAME in the movie?
They are 2 different entities. The song FAME is in the film and it won the Oscar for Best Song the year of the film's release. The movie is light years ahead of it's stage incarnation.
Which would you say is better? Also, are the characters similar in both versions?
"The movie is light years ahead of it's stage incarnation."
I think that means the movie's better. And, if I'm not mistaken, the characters are completely different.

I thought the movie was okay, but I'm not a huge Fame fan to begin with.
The characters are totally different in the movie, yes
I was 'lucky' enough to see FAME ON 42ND STREET, and the music was completely different from the film, except they awkwardly tacked on 'Fame' at the end. The characters were 'different' enough, by name at least, but the types were exactly the same as the movie. The tough Latina girl, the angry black boy, the sensitive white boy, the stern English teacher. I love the movie, and laughed my ass off at the show. Not with the show, at the show, it was that bad. IMHO.
I've seen FAME the movie, and saw the stage show last night. Trust me: the movie is WAY better.
"Fame, The Musical" always gets panned by critics, I thought it was a lot of fun, with great songs and dancing. I personally loved it and saw it 4 times! I loved the Carmen Diaz character.
