Family Guy Kills Off Main Character *SPOILERS* — Page 2

"So, why was Brian's death here not as important as last nights?"

Because by the end of that episode, Brian was alive and well. And the Griffins didn't have a new dog. And the creators didn't give interviews saying that they'd made a decision to kill him off and replace him.

Whether the last part turns are to be permanent or not, time will tell. But taken all together, that's why it's not the same.

I watch the Simpsons when they come out with the season sets, so I'm way behind. I think I just binged season 16 and they're already up to season 20-something.

So I'm some years behind. It does seem to be losing steam in the season I'm on, but they very well could have gotten their mojo back by now.

Here's the thing with Seth McFugly. He does not give a ****. Or a ****. I gave Family Guy a try over and over again, but its mean spiritedness and cruelty is too much. I use the Bruce Vilanch litmus test of whether there's a limit to what's okay to joke about and he says it's, "Basically, did anybody die?"

So I'm watching Family Guy and the father makes a crack about Matthew Broderick and says "he killed two people in Ireland." I turned the station and never watched the show again. Because it's not funny to make a joke about two dead people who were accidentally killed by an American celebrity. That's the kind of thing I can't overlook.

It also makes it hard to whip up outrage over the shark-jumping decision to kill off that character on the show.

The article is about Maya Rudolph and Glenn Howerton doing guest voicing on the show. The description for their episode is: “After Brian experiences the ‘runner’s high’, he becomes a distance running douche, and even signs himself up to run a marathon.”

...And this thread is just one small sample of proof that Seth's cheap ploy worked. People are talking about Family Guy again. This was a publicity stunt. Nothing more.

Such tsuris over a mean spirited cartoon that kicks the little guy when s/he's down.

i'm sorry, but I have to honestly ask. Out of all the brands of humor that are employed on Family Guy, them joking about an event (and an obscure one at that) that happened a little over 30 years ago is one that gets you upset? I get that you subscribe to the Bruce Villanche school of thought when it comes to comedy. But, I'm convinced, the more and more that I watch Family Guy, that Seth's views are more in line with that of the late George Carlin. And, that is that nothing should be off limits to joke about. And, oftentimes what makes a joke funny or not funny is the way in which the joke is constructed rather than the subject matter.

Let me give you a little example of how Family Guy has done some good as well. A few season back, there was an episode in which the son (Chris) got a crush on a girl at school and wanted to ask her out. The girl had Down Syndrome. Yes, they did make jokes about it. Now, knowing that would you continue to say that they are a bunch of heartless people on that creative team? What if I were to tell you that the actress who did the voice of the girl with Down Syndrome actually has it herself? And, she herself was beyond okay with what was going on in the show. Well, further into the episode, Chris and the girl are on their date. He asks her what her parents do for work, she replies by saying "my Dad's a banker, and my Mom's the former governor of Alaska." Now, this is something that caused an uproar by the conservative right. Keep in mind, that this episode came out during the height of Sarah Palin's popularity. In fact, Palin herself came to the defense of the actress for having to have been put through what Family Guy did to her. The actress herself told Pain (and the rest of the media right) to basically **** off, she didn't need their pity or support, and that she's happy with the way she is and loves her life. So, think about that when you think that there is nothing good in Family Guy.

To be perhaps a little too blunt, I think that the obscure joke regarding Brodrick wasn't what got you to think that you hated Seth, I feel that from what you're saying that the old adage came into play. If you tell yourself that you're not going to like something, when you try it you're most likely not going to like it. That you felt that you didn't like Seth's style of humor to begin with and that was more what got you to be pissed off rather than the fact that he made a joke about people being killed.

You're right, Carlin was a bit mean spirited towards the end of his life. I felt that during the years after he lost his wife, his work started to go downhill substantially. And, he slowly went from being shocking and funny at the same time, to just shocking. whereby as a fan, I started to feel sorry for the guy.

There is a bit that Carlin did in the 90's called "Rape can be Funny." Now, the lead in to this bit was him talking about how he felt that as a comedian, that there are lots of people and lots of different groups out there that feel that you should be able to say some things and not others and want to control speech. While that routine may initially come off as someone making jokes about a topic that you can't joke about. There's more layers to it than meets the eye. He isn't simply talking about and making jokes about rape. He was proving the point that in any situation positive or negative, rhetoric we use to describe things can be funny, but the situations in which they are being used can be bad. Another example from Carlin was talking about how PTSD was originally called "shell shock." And he joked about all of the stages of different names for the mental illness. Ending with the thought that if it was originally called shell shock than people would have gotten the treatment that they need these days. This is just my opinion.
