FANNY starring Leslie Caron and directed by Joshua Logan will finally be released to DVD on 06/17/08!
Marcel Pagnol's "Marseilles Trilogy" is the basis for this heartwarming drama about the denizens of the French waterfront. As young Marius (Horst Buchholz) aches to escape the dull life his father has encouraged him to lead and plans a long adventure at sea, his beloved Fanny (Leslie Caron) struggles with her desire to keep him tethered to her side. Maurice Chevalier, Charles Boyer also star. 134 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; theatrical trailer.
As many film buffs know this version was adapted from the Broadway stage musical which was also directed by Joshua Logan and starred Florence Henderson and Ezio Pinza, in the transition from stage to screen a decision was made to cut all the songs from the piece and use the remaining melodies as underscore. Nevertheless, it is quite a beautiful, moving and remarkable film.

And nominated for best picture (along with 4 other categories) in 1961!
What a treat!
Yay! And for the complete Pagnol experience, Kino Video has the original trilogy in a beautiful boxed set. I gave it to PalJoey'sPal for Christmas last year and the movies are wonderful.
The Fanny Trilogy (Marius/Fanny/Cesar) (1948)
And yet Leslie Caron's best performances--both Oscar-nominated--are not out on DVD:
LILI, 1953
THE L-SHAPED ROOM, 1963
Great films and performances; hell a film [LILI] with Zsa Zsa Gabor where she is also good deserves to come out on DVD.
I always found Leslie Caron annoying. That mouth, ugh.
check her out in those two films. you might change your mind.

Loved her in THE L-SHAPED ROOM. She certainly deserved the Oscar nod. She played a character so far removed from anything she had ever played before. I was really impressed with her work in that film.
I prefer it like this -
FANNY
With a great cast including Brock Peters, as a black gay man, and others in the Bryan Forbes stable of damn good character actors.
