Me and my friends and family were so sad when Mitch Hedberg died. He was our fave. We can all recite all his jokes off by heart...and do so on a regular basis.

Posted: 9/11/05 at 12:43pmI'm not up on a lot of stand-up comedy (although I do like Ellen), but, guilty pleasure: haven't seen anything of him in years, but back in the 80s I loved Emo Philips, weird as he was. He did a half-hour on Cinemax and an hour on HBO that I saw. I remember he had some funny stuff, including comparing eternity to standing in a line at the supermarket, and coming up with an ecumenical prayer that speaks to all faiths: "Lord, please break the laws of the universe for my convenience. Amen." (Heh, which I think is the universal inter-faith prayer.)

There's another comedian, dont remember his name, i think his show is called blue collar comedy or something. A friend of mine downloaded it and it's HILARIOUS! Completely in hysterics once he really got going.

I think my all-time favorite is Sandra Bernhard, although she has completely evolved into something far beyond simple stand-up.
Otherwise, for my list I'm mostly going to stick to people I have seen perform live and in person and whom I loved, and it's a long list because seeing stand-up Is What I Do. But first, a mention of Bill Hicks, whom I never saw live, but who was clearly touched by the hand of god.
Okay, I just recently saw Lynn Koplitz and she had me gasping. I saw Lewis Black this month and also last year, and he is a force of nature. Lee Evans, who went on to become Leo Bloom opposite Nathan in the London "Producers" did a 20 minute set once that I seriously thought was going to kill me. I expected to be found slumped beneath my seat and my epitath to read "He died laughing. Literally."
The late great homo Frank Maya was a favorite, long may his Anne Frank joke reign. There are many, many genius queer comics who have slayed me over the years (and many who are horrible), the geniuses (at least at the time that I saw them) were: Jaffe Cohen, Scott Thompson, Kate Clinton (I'm heard laughing in the audience on one of her cds), Maggie Cassella, Lea DeLaria, Rosie O'Donnell, Reno, Ellen Degeneres, Seattle's Dina Martina [from another planet, but a genius], and Marga Gomez.
Scott Capuro was absolutely shockingly hilarious when I caught his set in Montreal, he's from SF, and I strongly recommend him for people who like acidic social critique from a homo. He's a GENIUS.
Oh, and just for the heck of it, I abhor Betsy Salkind, Sandra Valls and Georgia Ragsdale. With so many excellent lesbian comics in the world, I have no idea why these three haven't given up.
And now for the presumably straight people who cracked me the hell up, including many who took my by surprise with their skills: Adam Ferrara, Aisha Tyler, Andy Kindler (BRILLIANT!), Barry Crimmins, Brett Butler, Chris Titus, Dave Coulier, DJ Hazard, Greg Proops (GODLIKE!), Robert Schimmel, Tammy Faye Starlite (utterly committed to her Christian Contemporary Singer character).
And of course, Jimmy Tingle and Denis Leary and Margaret Cho and Robin Williams and the young Paula Poundstone.
These are just the ones whose names I remember. In other words, they played early in the night. But looking at my list, this makes me see why I never have any money.

I would say most of the ones mentioned, but I'll add, one, Jeff Foxworthy. As the proud son of Texas (kind of), I used to call myself a redneck. And while I still qualify sometimes (dog and wallet are both on a chain), I know better now.
Also, for any one who has seen Comedy Central Presents Carlos Mencia, you'll agree with me. I've only seen two or three episodes of his new show (which, let's face it - was CC trying to replace Chapelle's Show), but it's been pretty funny.
