Because I'm totally uncultured, I'll say Alan Menken!
I'm also pretty fond of Frank Wildhorn.
JRB
Stephen Sondheim.
His musicals are metaphors.

Sondheim is my favorite composer, but I also love the shows he's been strictly a lyricist on, particularly Gypsy. He seems to churn out infinitely deeper works when he's on his own though. Then again, that may have been the result of those works being written later on with more life experience behind them.
My hat goes to Sondheim, but they're all so different. I love so many, and I have a feeling not all of them will be mentioned here, so to preserve the honor of my heroes, here we go:
Lerner/Loewe
Adler/Ross
Hammerstein/Kern
Rodgers/Hart
Rodgers/Hammerstein
Berlin
Boubil/Schoenberg
and, already mentioned
Cole Porter
Kander/Ebb
JRB
I also feel Webber deserves a mention, although for me he's very hit-or-miss.
I'm very surprised Ahrens/Flaherty would be anyone's top...
Don't feel bad about liking him if you do (same goes for Menken and Wildhorn), but be sure you use them to push you into some more theatrical stuffs.
EDIT: I feel terrible, but I forgot the lovely pair Comden/Greeen

listening to Pattis "Don't Cry for me Argentina". Chills.
Andrew LW. JCS and PTO arent too bad either.
Can't possibly pick one! Hunter/Jeff? :)
or probably Larry O'Keefe...not because of LB but because of Bat Boy.
And then the ever fabulous Sondheim!
Is it too soon to say Kerrigan/Lowdermilk? I think not!
But for something a little more classic, you can't go wrong with Sondheim.
