Here's where you start!

I haven't gone through and read the 10 pages preceding my post, so forgive if I'm redundant.

While I like all the usual MGM musicals, I also like two of the lesser known: LILI and THE GLASS SLIPPER. Oops, is there a recurring theme here -- Leslie Caron?

That's what I am: an in-between.
I'm just like Smallpox Quarrantine.

"In my singing school, I am one of many....Swing, Mr. Mendelsohn, Swing!"

One of Judy's best numbers pre-Oz from EVERYBODY SING.

Also "The Bumpy Road to Love" from...what was that movie with Mary Astor pre-Oz...also Scotty Beckett, where they kidnapped their mother in the trailer to get her together with Walter Pidgeon? I'm in fear of losing my queer card because I can't remember the movie -- was it LISTEN, DARLING?

rlbgbc, listen darlin, your queer card is still in operation -- yes it was "Listen Darlin" :)

and Master, sorry you don't like Strike Up Th Band. Judy and Mickey were going to do Good News (hence, Garland as a librarian) that year but the looming war shouted the need for Garland/ Rooney patriotism -- hence the more patriotic "Strike" was filmed.

Favorite "Stike" line, as blonde kitten June Preisser walks into the high school class and Judy leans over to Margaret Early and (touching her hairline) dryly notes "She's touched it up"

And Cookie, Lily Mars!!
"What is this throbbing within me?
What is this rhythm so new?"
(Hey wait, that sounds like dirty talk!)

Look at those pictures! I think people who don't think Judy Garland was beautiful are out of their minds.

Okay, okay. I know it's a goddamned Warner Bros cartoon, but it has Judy in glorious voice singing songs by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg ("Paris Is a Lonely Town") and voices by Robert Goulet and Hermione Gingold and Morey Amsterdam and animation by Chuck Jones in the style of Impressionist painters.

I mean it's no CATS, but...

I'm in a Harvey Girls mood myself -

I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

BT--she looks so MEAN in that picture, you would swear it's from Manchurian Candidate!

And thanks for starting this thread--I know it's made me smile on a bad day on more than one occasion.

Back in O-hi-o, where I come from,
I've done a lot of dreamin'--and I've traveled some,
But I never thought I'd see the day
When I'd ever catch a ride on the Santa Fe...

PJ- you can see the Manchurian Candidate in her eyes, can't you?! As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. I was playing charades with a bunch of straight people and I had put that song in and one of them got it and it was the funniest thing on the planet watching them try to act it out.

was that Angela Lansbury?!!!
#262

Here's where you start!

It sure was!! And wasn't she something like...SIXTEEN years old when she made THE HARVEY GIRLS? (I gotta skee-doodle so I can't check)

IMHO: "On the Atcheson, Topeka and the Santa Fe" is the single greatest MGM musical number ever. Or one of the top five.

Fun fact: Judy's sister Sue Garland is one of the vocalists, in the chorus.
"Christ, Bette Davis?!?!"
#263

Here's where you start!

Yes, that is Angela Lansbury. Quite the dish, wasn't she?

Another golden Joots moment from LILY MARS: Love, love, love her rendition of "Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son" in the party scene. That Judy was a hepcat, for sure!

And AndyHardy, thanks for reassuring me re: my innate queerness. Without it, I wouldn't know where to turn or where to go or what to do. :)

A young Andy Williams (and the Williams brothers) were also in the vocal chorus of "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe." When Judy appeared on his 1965 tv show Andy mentioned that he was just a kid then. Judy quipped, "Well..I wasn't exactly Walter Brennen myself!" :)

Atchison rocks. Roger Edens and Kay Thompson knocked that arrangement outta the ball field!

Hey! We're gonna roll in plenty--
Spend a five or ten or twenty!
And those happy harvest bells are gonna chime!
Remember, neighbor, when you work for Mother Nature,
You get paid by
Father Time!

LOL AndyHardy!
Love the Walter Brennen story!

WHO...

Stole my heart away?

WHO...

Makes me dream all day?

Dreams I know will never come true.

Seems as though I'll ever be blue.

WHO..

Means my happiness?

WHO...

Would I answer yes to?

Well you oughta guess who--

No one but you.

I love Angela's bit in Til the Clouds Roll By. So cute.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
