Finding Neverland#0
Posted: 11/27/04 at 5:03pmI just got home from seeing this movie... it was amazing and everyone should go see it. Also, it has a preview for The Phantom of the Opera... everyone in the theater seemed pretty excited to see it.

Posted: 11/27/04 at 9:35pmI loved Finding Neverland!!! I just saw it yesterday. I thought Johnny Depp couldn't get any hotter but once he talked with a Scottish accent, I found out I was wrong. I hope he gets an Oscar for this or at least something. I first need to see all the movies to cast my vote. I already know the POTO trailer by heart so when I saw the really dusty chandelier I was so excited. They also had The Aviator, which I also want to see b/c of Katherine Hepburn.

amazing. just amazing.
but there were two problems with it
1) they didn't use Scott Alan's "Never NeverLand"
2) When I saw it, they didn't show the phantom trailer! i was really excited to see it! ...oh well, ive watched it enough times on my computer! hehe

Posted: 12/19/04 at 9:12amI saw this wonderful film a few weeks ago in DC and was pleased to notice the name Jonathan Butterell in the credits for choreography. He did stunningly beautiful stage movement and choreography for NINE.

I saw this film nearly a month ago (thank god for cool advanced runs in New York!). I never cry at movies. I certainly didn't cry as much as *some* people but I pretty much bawled at parts. This is a special film. Johnny will easily get an Oscar nomination and this might be his year for the award for body of work.
And, Paradox, Johnny is 50 times hotter than he was in Chocolat.

I saw it this afternoon.
Excellent actors, poorly directed in an ennervating script. For a story with imagination as the core, there was none of it in evidence. Neither in how it's told, nor in the dialogue. The actors were all directed with one note: less emotion. Predictable choices were allowed. The only magic was the play-within-a-play, because those lines, and the action, were written by Barrie.
I had no expectations going in, and left with the impression that the film takes itself too seriously.

I enjoyed this movie, but it never really peaked like I hoped it would. The final couple of scenes were powerful, though.
The performances by Depp and Winslet are very good, but nothing Oscar-worthy. Julie Christie and talented newcomer Freddie Highmore have more showy roles. I hope Depp does not get an Oscar nomination for this, as there are other more deserving male performances, like Kevin Bacon, Jamie Foxx, Jeff Bridges, Liam Neeson, Don Cheadle, Leo DiCaprio, Paul Giamatti, Javier Bardem, Don Cheadle, and Tom Cruise.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 9:03pmWhat really has me laughing is that everyone defending Depp nominations for "Finding Neverland" insists on how hard it must have been for him to give a "subtle" (aka sleepwalker, phone-in) performance. Yet these same people also use "eccentric" as an adjective to describe Barrie...
re: Finding Neverland#17
Posted: 12/19/04 at 9:07pmWell, I must say that I have to disagree with a couple of the posts above. I just got back from seeing "Finding Neverland" and was completely touched by it. I am not a man that usually cries at movies, but I was overwhelmed with emotions in this story. Jose, I respect your opinion on the movie, however as a director has told me many times before, "Sometimes Less is More" and that is so much truer in this film. The emotions might have seen a little subtle to you, but behind those eyes I was connecting with with every emotion of those characters. I felt the connection, and when the time comes that "I" am whisked off to Neverland it is so much more the powerful. As an artist, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and thought the writing was quite powerful. It hit home to me because throughout my life I have been made fun of for having such a silly imagination for things. I've even had to stand in front of the class with my nose pressed in the middle of a circle drawn on a chalk board because I expressed a little too much of my imagination in class. This movie to me is like a slap in the face for all those critics who have made fun of me or any other artist for believing in our imagination. I am rooting for as many Golden Globes and Oscars to go to this movie!

This film did something amazing to me with no effort: it made me cry during almost the whole thing. Tears of sorrow, but mostly tears of joy. I literally stayed teary eyed from the moment the boys flew out the window til the credits--as did my best friend. Never has THAT happened to me. And, I really don't feel that the film was gimmicky to do that--it was just honest. It's subject matter just made that a natural reaction.
I haven't seen The Aviator or Million Dollar Baby yet--both considered along with Sideways to be front runners for Best Picture. But, I can say that I will be very pleased to see FN nominated, and I would be thrilled to see it win.

I'm happy you, and others, are enjoying it.
Personally, I found it to be cheap sentimentality.
For me, only the scenes in the theatre had any life to them, and the scene in the living room towards the end of the film. At least until the curtains were drawn open.
I admire Depp, and Winslet, and certainly Christie, all of whom appeared to me to be struggling with the dull script, and to be emotionally corseted in their performances.
Anyhow, it's doing well, and mine is just one lone opinion, with no more value than that.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 9:28pmWell, José your opinion is of great value to me. Without "differences" this world would be a pretty boring place.

What is it we always say here? You are allowed to have your opinion, and I am allowed to think your opinion is crap?

Yes it is true, JRB.
Unfortunately for the performing arts today, it's this common denominator audience that have driven away truly great works of art, and in their place have spawned and spread cheap emotions and manipulative directing posing as art.
Ah, that's just my opinion.
