... and they all lived happily ever after. The End.
somms, i'm guessing you were one of the readers who got the incomplete book, huh?
Lots of people RobbO!
As far as Mrs. W goes I have seen it coming from book 1! She is a loving and doting mom. She did what any mom would do, to the people that harmed her children. (I too am looking forward to this scene in the movie)
Doby's scene just wrenched my heart out.
You mean there's more than 167 pages?
mominator, minus 20 points for not following directions. so are you saying that mrs. w (who?!?) and dobey the house elf die. that's it!?!
I got the distinct impression that the ending was lopped off and a shortened, abbreviated version (the appendix) was added. Rowling started changing her answer re the end of Harry and company with the statement "Never say never". I think it's possible that we never hear about the Weasley's, the Malfoy's, Luna, etc. so that future books can be written about the missing 19 years. The Voldemort series is definitely at an end, but they could serve as loosely related, stand alone stories. Wouldn't that be wonderful? To find out that we don't actually have to say goodbye to this group?
It's not possible to say it in just ten words...
I'm probably forgetting people (I know I am), but here's what I can remember...
MAJOR SPOILERS
(but if you're reading this thread, it's really your own fault)
Hedwig, Mad Eye Moody, Rufus Scrimgeour, Dobby, Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew, Ted Tonks, Vincent Crabbe, Fred Weasley, Severus Snape, Colin Creevey, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Bellatrix LeStrange, Nagini, & Lord Voldemort
humph. didn't rowling say that two main characters die? which of that lot would be the main characters? snape and voldemort?
RobbO, no you silly goose! (BTW you loose 20 cookies today!)
My post to you was LOTS of people die.
The Mrs W, and Doby were two different comments.
oh! i thought you meant that lots of people were missing the end of the book - which i saw a teaser for on the news last night.
and if they're ant cookies, i still don't want 'em!
I'm not saying I'll never change my mind, and I certainly would read anything that Rowling puts out, but speaking personally...I think that that should be the end. I've loved that world and those characters, and I'm sad that it's over, but I have such a sense of closure with the end of the series that anything further might threaten to undo that. Harry doesn't deserve anymore suffering, and I'd find it really difficult to be invested enough in any of the other characters.
I assumed that the two main characters she was referring to were Snape and Lupin... but really, I don't know.
Actually, I forgot one other death...
Technically, I think Harry was dead at one point.
But he came back to life, so I didn't really count him.
ff--good list, but I would also add Rufus Scrimgeour and the Muggle Studies professor to it.
Personally, I would count Snape, Mad-Eye, Tonks, and Lupin as main characters. Or maybe I just care too much for members of the Order of the Phoenix? My parents still don't quite understand why Tonks and Lupin's deaths ticked me off so much.
Harry was never dead. Dumbledore said so himself. Just the part of Voldemort's soul that was inside Harry was killed.
I've loved that world and those characters, and I'm sad that it's over, but I have such a sense of closure with the end of the series that anything further might threaten to undo that.
I would love to read a 'parallel to Book 7' book, where we learn all about what had been going on at Hogwarts during the year that the three weren't there...but other than that I agree with this.
I just finished it and I was shocked by the end! I was really upset by Lupin's death and by the fact that Harry had to die. It was interesting how Harry didn't really die.
The lack of the mirror in the fifth movie might make the seventh movie difficult...
Guitar, I thought that through much of this book, though I can't cite specific examples.
I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I loved it.
Considering that the fifth movie didn't have the mirror at all, and in the seventh book Harry finds a fragment in his trunk, then notices a blue eye in it, which it turns out is Aberforth constantly saving their lives and ultimately gets them into Hogwarts for the end, I think that movie seven will have a HUGE problem unless they fix that plot hole before that movie. I'm curious to see how they do it.
I can't believe Snape and Lily were best friends. I loved his memories, though. I also loved how Harry used the resurrection stone to bring Lily, James, Sirius, and Lupin back to help him. It was nice...

RE: foreshadowing. Oops. That's what happens when you reread chapters randomly. I got my chronology screwed up.
I loved it, cried four times, and have never cried while reading a book before. It was overwhelming. Dobby's death affected me way more that I thought it would. Not really Fred's, but Mrs. Weasley crying over his body.
She had the best line in the book!!
and I loved luna, when Harry said "Voldemort", and she said something like "oh, are we allowed to say his name now" in her Luna way. I was crying and laughing at the same time.
I also loved the reunion of everyone in the room of requirement. very touching.
McGonagal friggin' kicked ass in this book, God I love her, and can't wait to see Maggie Smith do her thing in the film.
I also wonder what the religious folks will say now that Harry has become a Christ-Figure, and the book can fall in with The Narnia books as an allegory. - "King's cross" and all. I mean, could you make it any more obvious.
I was really shocked at how Crabbe died in the R. of R. Burned alive! ouch. I was glad. I hated him.
I also think it was a testimony to Rowling how none of the kids ever used the killing curse at all, except Crabbe. the only people that ever killed were the adults, and I think that sent a good message to the kids reading the book, that no one their age ever killed anyone.
all in all, it was a wonderful series, and will go down in history with Narnia and LOTR as a series with universal themes and characters that will live forever.
And Snape will forever be debated as one of the most famous and controversial characters in literature.
Snape's character never ceases to amaze and intrigue me.
I loved Mrs. Weasley's line! I was laughing so hard, and I hope they put it in the movie. Good for her! Bellatrix had it coming.
I was hoping Neville would kill Bellatrix, but Mrs. Weasley was so awesome I didn't care.
Neville and McGonagall were both amazing. I've always loved the character of McGonagall, and I'm glad she got to do her stuff.
When did you all cry? I cried when Dobby died, Harry used the resurrection stone, Mrs. Weasley crying over Fred/Tonks and Lupin dying, and a bit at the end.
Neville did better than Bellatrix-he got the last horcrux!
I don't generally cry, but I cried a little by the end. The deaths saddened me a lot, though. So did the part where Harry was walking to his own death.
