When did you all cry?

When JKR killed Hedwig. I actually phrased it like that too, as I was reading it- with an "JKR is just *mean* for doing that" thrown in. It was such a great opening to the last book, but it was mean... and plus, after that I was convinced that she was going to kill of Hagrid. Totally convinced.

Hedwig's death surprised me, as did the attack, so early in the book.

I thought Mad-Eye didn't die and was going to come back at the final showdown. I guess I was wrong.

I think Expelliarmus was a brilliant move. I think it was Harry's "signature move" because Harry never really ever wants to kill someone. He'd much rather stun or disarm them.

Oh, I know, but stunning is so much more effective. If he had stunned Bellatrix instead of using Expelliarmus, Dobby wouldn't have died.

I love the fact that Harry used Expelliarmus to defeat Voldemort because in the beginning of the book, everyone was scolding Harry for using it, and telling him to start using more powerful spells. But, sure enough, Expelliarmus worked and Harry was able to kill Voldemort without tainting his soul with the use of Avada Kedavra.

I cried over Hedwig, Harry finding Mad-Eye's eye, Dobby, Harry finding out that he has to die, and the discovery of Fred, Tonks, and Lupin being dead. The last two added together had me sobbing so hard that I couldn't see the pages for a few minutes. Especially once it got through my mind that Tonks and Lupin were dead. Then I really lost it. My mom lost it when Harry asked his mother if dying hurts.

I cried again at the end, but mostly because I'll never again be able to have the satisfaction of reading a new Harry Potter book for the first time.

Dobby and Fred's deaths made me cry - I simply had never anticipated them dying, Fred especially. In Lupin's case, a part of me predicted his death because it seemed perversely "right" for him to be with the other Marauders, especially James and Sirius. Tonks was another unexpected blow. The forest chapter, however, had me genuinely sobbing, particularly when Harry asked if it hurt. That ripped my heart out.

And... I'm just sad that I'll never have the same special sense of anticipation, waiting for a Harry Potter book and the next installment in the story. I remember waiting for the second book to come out, and all these years later it seems strange I'll never have that urgent need to know what happens.

I kind of thought Mad Eye would come back as well! But he didn't, and in the end it didn't matter.

I also thought it was cool how Harry used expelliarmus to defeat Voldemort, and it worked. Amazing.

I loved that Jo did the attack so early, and then they were waiting for the pairs to get back. Great suspense in that part.

She's good at having suspense. I wonder how this will all play out in the movie version, considering a great deal of the book is extremely important.

I kind of thought Mad Eye would come back as well! But he didn't, and in the end it didn't matter.

So did I! I kept a list of all the deaths on a notepad so that I could keep them straight, and I wrote a question mark next to Mad-Eye's name. When they couldn't find the body I was convinced that he would come back as an Inferi. I'm kinda glad that he didn't, though.

Have I mentioned that I LOVED Potterwatch?? It made me think so much of all the Harry Potter podcasts out there. Plus the codenames were brilliant finished deathly hallows? spoilers here

Potterwatch was one of my favorite parts! I just felt so happy while they were listening to it.

Speaking of, we know what happened to Lupin, Fred, and Kingsley, but what happened to Lee Jordan?

"When did you all cry?" For me it was Mrs W. crying over Fred hit really close to home.
I was not too surprised by Hedwig's death. I think JKR was getting the readers ready for a very high body count and that no one was really safe.

I cried so many times... I almost cry now just thinking about it :P

If Harry hadn't used Expelliarmus on Bellatrix, he'd never have gotten her wand, and then they wouldn't have been able to do a bunch of things.

It was Fred on Potterwatch.

And Lupin's radio nickname made it so obvious it was him. I actually laughed.

His parents bestowed upon him the name Remus Lupin, and had the audacity to be surprised when he ended up a werewolf. Silly Lupins Sr.

Hedwig's death was a necessity I thought. In most movies, they will NEVER kill the dog. Cows are fair game, but dogs will always leap out of the way in time. Movie makers will only kill dogs when they want to give out the message - loud and clear - that all bets are off and ANYONE can die. Mostly in horror movies, but thrillers will do it as well. Hedwig was merely our dog substitute. With her death, you knew that NO ONE was safe. If the cute and cuddly pet owl can be killed, then so can anyone.

^ True. And that was certainly what happened during the book. Anyone could be killed.

I'm glad none of the trio was, though at points they came close (Harry, especially).

Lol to the Lupin thing.

Potterwatch was excellent. Also, it gave the book some humor when things were getting terribly grim.

The only part that had me outright sobbing was Harry bracing for his own death and talking to the eternally youthful images of his parents, Lupin and Sirius. Especially when he said "Stay close to me." That finished me off. And of course, I teared up upon the deaths of Fred, Tonks and Lupin. And Hedwig.
