KD Lang had problems getting airplay on many country stations. It's what nudged her away from country to the pop side of things. She didn't come out until the early 90s. But I don't think it was ever a secret. Hopefully times have changed enough for this guy to embraced by the country fans.

Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

He may not have problem with fans of his age demo, but radio program directors, and advertisers in the country market is another story.

He was very smart to build an Internet audience for the song, that could help. Also balls/brave/smart to present the video without ambiguity. He didn't hide by the song, which could easily lead people to say, "Was I hearing that right? Can't be". I hope the best for this young man. He has talent and sexy appeal. interesting to see if the country industry embrace him.

God, I can't stand country pop. I wonder what Hank Williams would make of the majority of stuff that gets played on country radio these days.

That said, handsome guy, nice voice and, you know, good on him. Hope he's a big success and then perhaps a gay country artist with a more distinctive voice will have a chance.

(So... what's the over/under on this guy having a gay porn past?)

PS - NY Times did a profile of the very successful openly gay country singer-songwriter Shane McAnally back in May. Granted, McAnally's most recent success is primarily as a songwriter, not as a performer, but still, worth mentioning.

Not sure if he did porn but he was an "underwear model." You can google it. I never know what might get my post deleted.

And in what way is he a predatory drunk? That "straight" guy is a total weenie-tease. If the gay guy BLEW him I am sure there would have been no "push away." Kissing is just too gay. If you watch the video the "straight" guy makes all the moves.

I love the song. I love his voice, and yes, that face and body speaks to my man-love parts like it obviously should. But I think this is gone as viral as the "first openly gay" country performer because Drake Jensen and KD Lang just aren't pretty enough to get all that attention. Openly gay is only worth massive attention if it's "pretty". We know this already...but I felt like posting because I've had that Kasey Chambers song "Not Pretty Enough" in my head since reading this.

I don't WANT to live in what they call "a certain way." In the first place I'd be no good at it and besides that I don't want to be identified with any one class of people. Chely Wright came out a few years agot, so to say this is the "first" is not quite accurate.

A lot of the k.d. lang backlash was over her vegetarianism. Did not sit well in cow country, but boy, could she sing it!

Actually, that label included "male" in it, but I mistakenly left it out when I first posted; also, I changed the term "star" to "performer" and added the question mark because I thought that was a misnomer.
