I always get a creepy feeling that the pioneer woman is gonna get a whoopin' if she doesnt make something her gross husband doesnt like.

The Pioneer Woman is hateful. The food, the family, the whole thing. Hateful.

I generally only watch Chopped, Cupcake Wars and some of the other Challenges (OMG I LOVE HALLOWEEN WARS).

If I'm watching a cooking show, it's on the Cooking Channel. I love the young vibe and the quirkier hosts. Even Bobby Deen is not a horror show. And after being terrified of Nadia G, I've stopped worrying and learned to love her and her bomb. She KILLS me.

I've never seen the Pioneer Woman, so I can't comment on her. I remember there was a show called Semi Homemade. That was at least honest that it wasn't completely from scratch.

I guess I find a program like Worst Cooks in America entertaining because it really amazes me of what gross stuff people were cooking and passing off as food. Like the woman who won in one season started off making macaroni and cheese with cottage cheese and other cheeses that did not go together. My favorite to date though is the guy who wrapped up fish in foil and cooked it in his dishwasher. He claimed he was steaming it. I know, it isn't like the cooking shows, but it is entertaining.

The pioneer woman does indeed give off a weird marital vibe. If I hear about what Ladd doesn't like one more time....

Her story is quite interesting- despite how she tries to pass off her "ranch"- Ladd and the kids taking care of the cows while she whips up rib-sticking meals, the Drummonds are one of the larger land owners in the US and their "ranch" is a huge cattle operation with many thousand head of cattle at any time as well as a very large full-time staff both on the ranch and in the house. For example the kids ARE home-schooled- by a full-time tutor.

And when she cooks, it's in the "Lodge." She had been blogging and decided to pitch her show idea to Food Network. Ladd didn't like the idea of the loss of privacy involved so they built the "Lodge"- a fully equipped TV studio with kitchen, dining room and office space to film the show in. IT cost well over a million dollars.

So every time Ree talks about rating her own cheese and how much that saves over pre-shredded....

And, she's no country farm girl. She's a doctor's daughter who grew up in an Oklahoma suburb on a golf course. She went to USC and studied journalism and was headed to law school in Chicago when she met the "cowboy".

I know I know Boobs- it's just hard to watch her show- where she talks about how difficult it is to coordinate the home school schedules or talks about the kids having to get the calves branded before they go out to play- when you know it's all just this middle-class fantasy.

It makes me mad because she should cook the kind of food I like- simple, easy, family-friendly stuff. Ina for example is a delight but she might as well be cooking for space aliens. I'm much more interested in a decent casserole idea or Ree's calzones. It's a love/hate relationship.

The problem with The Pioneer Woman is that it seems like such a fake set-up. Her (and her family's) actual biographical background is kind of interesting...but it gets this folksy spin that is completely inauthentic.

But Sandra Lee? Oh SH*T, that bitch is nutty, and I love her for it. I mean...I wouldn't cook a single thing she makes, but she is so bizarrely entertaining. Her Halloween episode is one of the trippiest hours of TV I've ever seen. Plus, I kinda like her hard-scrabble upbringing and how she somehow turned that into a successful (if unappetizing) food empire. Plus, she brought the word 'tablescape' into my life.

I used to enjoy watching Sandra Lee. I never tried her food, but the cocktails were pretty good. And those tablescapes? Yuck, but whateves.

I do miss me some Neely's. Their love for each other was only surpassed by their love of food. I met the wife a few times at Bath and Body Works and she's a doll. Very polite. Very real. No entourage. She always knew what she wanted. In and out.

When I find myself in front of the TV, I usually turn on Country Cooks or America's Test Kitchen on PBS.

Oooh America's Test Kitchen! Another Love/hate thing there! Sometimes the obsessive re-working of a recipe can get so anal-retentive! But then sometimes the thing they make looks SO good!

I do laugh at the product testing- I had just bought a $3 cutting board out of the clearance rack at Aldi when they told me the ONLY cutting board I should buy was a $200 number.

I just caught Rachel Ray making some BBQ chicken "Sammies." I wonder if she might not be what they call "taste blind." I find a LOT of her recipes too spicy- she seems to put some sort of Heat" in everything. Btu she also seems to have no idea what things taste like. Today, for example she advised added a couple of chipotle in adobo to give the BBQ sauce a smoky taste. Now as I said, I'm not much on spicy but adding a couple peppers is going to make it spicy, not smoky. Chipotles are smoked, but that flavor is way under the 'spicy" or "Hot" flavors. She always refers to cumin as having a smoky flavor (not to me) and today she suggested a couple shots of bourbon would make your sauce sweeter. Bourbon's not sweet. At all.

And I wish she'd just say how much she's adding- I've heard her say she doesn't like to give specific amounts because she thinks that makes recipes too complicated but "twice around the pan" with wine tells me nothing about how much wine to add.

I watched today because I was filling out forms so she wasn't getting 100% attention. I hate how every word needs to be Ray-ed: sammies, stoup, EVOO- ugh my tummy hurts.

She also is just nuts- this was the 30 minute meals show and she spent half the time making BBQ sauce out of ketchup, vinegar and bourbon. She poached chicken breast, then shredded the meat and tossed it in her BBQ sauce and then piled it in buns with this horrible sounding cabbage-n-apple slaw. Here's an idea Rach! Pick up KC Masterpiece or Sweet Baby Ray's when it's on sale and shred up leftover roast chicken or pick one up at the deli) and serve it with some coleslaw- either homemade or from the deli and presto- a TEN minute meal!

Eat the apples for dessert- they do not belong in cole slaw.

God, I can't stand Rachel Ray. I tried watching 30-Minute Schpiels and it was excruciating. "Awesome" apparently is her go-to time filler when she can't think of anything to say. The ingredients are awesome, it tastes awesome, it looks awesome, you'll think it's awesome, your family with think it's awesome, your bowel movements will be awesome... I tried a couple of recipes and they were awesome in the sense that I was in awe of how spectacularly bland they were. This is a woman who is simply paid to talk. She can talk constantly with a smile and that's about it. She got her start doing demos (or "classes") in a gourmet supermarket and she just found a way to take the act to television. She's openly admitted she has had no training and completely underqualified for all her jobs. She's just really good at promoting herself. And she's awesome at being annoying.
