Elphaba - Something about this group leads me to believe they are more of a Country Time mentality, but yes, I got it.

Whenever I'm in pride parades and see the protestors, I always blow kisses and say, "I love you!" It infuriates them to no end. They WANT you to get into a shouting match with them.

Isn't that the reverend from Poltergeist 2?

I noticed that as well....although I thought it was unfair to the late Julian Beck, the actor wo played that role, and was co-founder of The Living Theatre.

Julian Beck played the character, but Phelps IS Reverend Kane.

re: Fred Phelps - Bringing America Together

He came to yell at my church for being an open congregation... so we set up a protest and then he decided not to come. But we had fun being gay anyway. :) I came up with the slogan "Honk for equality" (we were standing on a busy corner) and lots of people did! Wow, now that I think about it, that was like, 3 1/2 years ago.

God that woman is scary. I can't belive that there are people who belive what Fred Phelps is saying.
The towel waving reminded me of a Per?nist rally. I kept chanting "Evita!" whenever they'd pan to the crowds. - SM2

I find it amusing that almost the entire congregation (89 I think) are mostly his own family.......talked about one screwed-up family.

I hope I'm here on the day God comes down and zaps them.......and hopefully Dante is thinking up their own special circle in Hell.....

Well, if you look at their membership, you'll see that some crazy percentage is the actual family themselves. (They quoted numbers in the video, but I can't stomach watching it again.) You're realy only talking about a very small handfull of people who are not part of the Phelps family who have been drawn in, and I suspect that many of the actual family members are only around for the media opportunities. Shirley Phelps-Roper's party line seems so well-rehearsed that I doubt it has anything to do with her personal "faith" and more to do with personal gain and attention.

Their cause and position is SO wacked out... I could probably walk out of my front door right now and start a cult and gain more non-family members than they have. This is why I think they won't off themselves like all of the "respectable" cults.

Say what you will about suicide cults, they at least have the courage of their convictions. I believe the entire Phelps organization is based solely on personal gain and attention. THAT is why we will never be rid of them.

Edited for punctuation.

And no one grew into anything new, we just became the worst of what we were."
