Although I fully agree that their actions are deplorable, I don't think that having Fred Phelps and his group as victims of the attacks on Monday would make it any less tragic. All human life has value, even if it is being squandered through the spreading of hatred.
While I certainly wish they would all shut up and go away, I do not wish death on anybody.

Posted: 4/18/07 at 9:14amIt does make you wonder though - they celebrate any deaths as a display of Gods rightful vengence against America. Would they act the same way if it was one of their own? I know that applying logic to these people is doomed to failure, but I don't understand how people can be so twisted by hate to turn into the monsters they've become....

Sadly Eastwickian, more likely than not they would hold the person up as a martyr, and say they have gone to their glory.

Ack, you're probably right. I only found out about the family a few week ago when they were the subject of a documentary here in Britain. Despite the efforts of the presenter to get to the root of their beliefs, they seemed to have an answer for everything, even if it made no sense whatsoever and flatly contradicted other parts of their doctrine.
It's the only time I have ever been so annoyed that I've wanted to actually throw things at the television...

Posted: 4/18/07 at 9:43amJust as an update, groups of VT students are organizing on Facebook to attend the funerals and surround the mourners to keep these people away and allow everyone to grieve with privacy. We have also contacted the Patriot Guard Riders.

Unfortunately, this doesnt surprise me in the least...it should, but it doesnt. This group has been doing this for many years, and this is just the newest attention getter they've come up with.
His followers dont care what we or anyone else think, however...so even negative attention is just fine with them.

I went through a whole I hate fred phelps phase, but then I realized I was being just like him. Wouldn't want to be anything like him so now I just pity him. (But that doesn't stop me from being tempted to picket HIS funeral)
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?
