Well, we don't want your sympathy. We want equality as tax paying Americans. And when people like you can get that through your head, maybe things won't be so messed up.

A Freakin' OFFICIAL religion for the country? Are you smoking crack? This country was formed out of FREEDOM of religeon...and what makes you so god damned sure that the religeon of choice would be Christianity? From what I see - you are not much of a poster child for it darling.

Cheezdoodle calm down! I never said Christianity should be the offical religion all I said was as long as we're siding with the word of God on gay marriage then yes Christianity would make sense.

JRB, you don't want my sympathy? NO COMMENT.

I think the big distinction here, as someone who has not future vested in this argument and could therefore be talking out of her ass, is whether you view marriage as solely a religious ceremony.

I think the term marriage has been applied to those ceremonies performed by religious representatives, and by civil authorities.

If the issue is compelling a church to perform a religious ceremony, I actually agree that the state should not be able to do that. If a church wants to - that is wonderful.

But, marriage and the issuance of a marriage license is something done by the local governments, with ceremonies performed by justices of the peace, by captains on ships. It is not just something done by religious institutions.

I think there is a huge difference between telling a church you have to marry a gay couple, and legalizing gay marriage. One does not necessariliy have anything to do with the other.

"as long as we're siding with the word of God on gay marriage then yes Christianity would make sense. "

Should the Jews and Muslims ALSO make sense of Christianity to form their opinions of what God thinks? What about Buddhists? Hindus? Atheists? What about gay friendly Christians?

Hey--skim through the Bible and pick and choose what morals to be passionate about and what morals should just be swept under a rug. It's your thang. Do what you wanna do and all.

But I pay taxes. I want my equal rights.

I would be very surprised if anyone fighting for gay marriage is fighting to have all churches forced to marry us. That's not it at all--we want the legal marriage and all its rights. Then, we'll decide who to marry us and where and whether or not to book the VFW Hall or the Hyatt.

EDIT:

Answered my question -

With the answered I thought you would provide.

I think for some it is an issue of terminology. And again, for others, it is just a way to hide behind their prejudice.

And, if book the Hyatt one day, I may just have to come out to NY to celebrate!

Answered above. And there are plenty of CHRISTIAN churches who would gladly marry a gay couple.

And, no, burl--don't want or need your sympathy or pity. Need people like you to stop voting away MY rights.

My words aren't getting through to you people, maybe I'm not wording it right, because you guys just seem to not get what I'm saying. So all together it's like this...

-I feel marriage should be between a man and woman only.
-I do feel sorry that homosexuals wont get the same legal rights, but hey thats just that (I'm not a politican)

PS. JRB: I don't make the laws but as long as politicans settle this manner via the bible then Freedom of religion is tossed out the window regardless. It's sad but true to many non-Christians that our government is ran by Christians who sometimes make laws on their own personal beliefs not everyones.

I don't think you actually answered the question.

I do not really care about the word you use. But, if there is a mechanism other than something called marriage, and it would provide gay couples with all of the same rights (and restrictions and headaches!) of married couples, would you support it?

Well that's not the way it should be. And that's what people like me fight against because religion should NOT be a factor in politics.

"-I feel marriage should be between a man and woman only.
-I do feel sorry that homosexuals wont get the same legal rights, but hey thats just that (I'm not a politican) "

And I find this juxtaposition to be ridiculous, incongruous, and pitiful. Clearly you don't pity us poor homos all that much. Giving us our rights has NO affect on you or your marriage or your family or your religious beliefs. Our winning our argument does NOTHING to you.

But your winning your argument does MUCH to me and my life.

And again, to hell with your or anyone else's religious beliefs--I PAY MY EFFING TAXES JUST LIKE YOU.

I was afraid that quote "I do feel sorry that homosexuals wont get the same legal rights, but hey thats just that (I'm not a politican) "
would be taken out of context. I do care, I care for everyone I'm not a monster when I see people in sorrow I sympathize, do I always support what ever their sorrowful about, no but I care so please don't think for a second I don't.

I'm not really sure, do you mean homosexuals get the same rights and they perform a ceremony but they just give it a different name? If so, then no. But if they do give gays through some other means besides marriage equal rights then sure I'm up for it.

Did you really say this country has no official religion YET??? You are insane. The country is based on the fact that there IS NO OFFICIAL religion. Politicians don't settle ANYTHING via the bible and if they do, it's actually illegal.

This country has no offical religion yet, when it comes to gay marriage we preach Christian values to make their marriage illegal if we would just come out and say we are a Christian nation

Are you KIDDING? Are you going to just deport all the other religions? Maybe you can just go all Hitler on them. America is a melting pot, sweetie. We left England to get away from religious persecution.

and it says in clear print about God's opinion on gay marriage we wouldn't have this whole mess.

Where? I would like you to show me where God says ANYthing about gay marriage in the bible. And since you are a CHRISTian, show me where Christ EVER mentions homosexuality at ALL.

Everything is just a mess, and I know there are countries like England which is a Christian country that allows Gay marriage, which I think is just dumb on their part.

Why? You give your opinions but don't back them up. Answer this, WHY do you feel that marriage should only be between a man and a woman? How is it a slap in the face?

I am from the South and I have never heard such idiotic backwards statements in my life. Uninformed people like you are what is wrong with our country, not the fact that about 10% of us would like to be treated as equals and not second class citizens.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

Well, burl, one day I am going to have the right to go to a courthouse with my man and we are going to sign a MARRIAGE certificate.

Then, we are going to have a big ol GAYYYY wedding in a CHURCH.

We'll have a reception like you have never seen.

And a honeymoon that will rock the world.

And I really do hope this gives you and others who think like you fantastic nightmares.

I think I have backed up my answers, but I'll explain it again. I'm a fairly religious person (not that means anything) I'm not a hardcore Christian but I try to listen to God and read the bible when I can, ect. And I agree (seeing since I believe God created everything) that he created marriage and he created it for a man and a woman ok, simple enough. Now, these are just my opinions I wont go marching to Washington in anger if gays want to marry, it's just my personal belief. That's all.

Well,

Since you have to have some form of contract in order to have the rights, there must be a ceremony or signing event in some way to certify the contract.

That is all a marriage really is - entering into a contract to be married to another. This legal contract is recognized by state and federal governments, and employers, and granting the two parties to certain rights, benefits and presumptions.

The crux of your answer is that your religious and personal beliefs are such that you believe that gay couples should not be able to enter into a legal contract whereby each individual makes certains promises and in return is to recieve certain benefits.

Those are your beliefs, my arguments will not change them. I don't agree with them. But at least I clearly understand them now.

But you are basically saying, "I believe it because it's what I believe." God didn't say it, honey. The bible is 100% hearsay. But you are one of those people who believe the bible says things it just doesn't say.

Honestly, I find it incredibly ironic that anyone involved in the arts (which is SO open and accepting) could hold those views. Why? Because you should know better. You are around us to know that what you have been told to believe by some random preacher and others doesn't add up with the people you have met and possibly come to adore and love. You should know better. You should think for yourself.

I have friends from college who know better, and as they abandoned their pot smoking and/or slutty and/or pagan ways for a life of marriage, kids, and surburbia, they COULD have chosen to attend a gay friendly church. But, no. Despite knowing better, they let their homophobic, bigoted churches brainwash them into this absolutely political and manipulative rhetoric. And, now they forget what they knew.

It is very sad when people don't think for themselves.
