I have no problem with people who are against gay marriage. It's their opinion, although, in MY opinion, they are being closed-minded. It's the religious nuts that are against gay marriage that I can't stand. Especially the hypocritical politians who claim that it is not a religious issue when it really is.
Being Jewish, I've had to put up with a lot of crap from other people telling me I'm going to hell because I don't believe that Jesus is God, erm...the son of God? Or the Messiah? Wait, what?
If I wanted to live in a country under a theocracy suppressing individuality and diversity, I'd move to Iran.

"I do feel sorry that homosexuals wont get the same legal rights, but hey thats just that"
You know what, it is 2006 and sayings like "That's just that" or "That's just the way it is" don't cut it anymore. It's ignorant sayings like this that have kept minority groups in repression for years. But now we're all too aware of that, and we're much too smart to stand for it. Women weren't allowed the right to vote, blacks had no choice but to live in slavery, 6 million Jews were murdered because that's just what they deserved, just who they were, just the way it was. Today, kids continue to suffer daily in schools as homophobia lives and breathes in the hallways because parents like you teach their kids that gays are a big joke, not real live important human beings who deserve to be treated equal to everyone else. You know something? I honestly feel that no one person in this entire world is better than any other. You should really try to adapt to that way of thinking. You'd be so surprised at how liberating it can be and all of the wonderful people you'll get to know. I see you just joined BWW a couple weeks ago, Burlesquebabe, so I welcome you to talk about Broadway and to get to know the people who post here, the human beings just like you, all of us of different ages and races and religions and sexual orientations. I invite you to come to one of the events hosted by BWW and get to know all of the folks here in person. It seems clear that you haven't met too many real living gay people in your day and that the only familiarity you have with anything gay is the opinions preached by mainstream politicians and mainstream media. The gay people whose rights you are so against won't be found on television, in the newspaper, in the movies, even on stage. You'll meet them in person, and what better way to get to know real, live people from different backgrounds than at an event or on a discussion board where everyone shares a similar passion, in our case theatre. I look forward to meeting you in person and I hope you can do your best to keep the most open of minds as you join in discussions on this board. You might actually learn a thing or two.

I was born and raised in a Christian church. I was more active at that church than anyone else. I taught Sunday school, did summer camps, led the youth choir. I read my bible daily, could quote it, knew all the songs. I was that kid.
In high school we were having a youth group sleep over. We were all laying around in the living room watching some Disney movie. We were all laying on the floor or couches. I was laying on the ground and Emma was sitting on the floor beside me. She said, "C'mere" and patted her thigh. I thought nothing of it and used her thigh as a pillow. She started brushing my hair. I started having feelings I had NEVER felt before. All i wanted to do was kiss her. I looked up at her and she winked at me. She asked me to come to the kitchen with her to make popcorn. We had our first kiss there. I had never even thought about kissing a woman and it was at a bible study sleep over. My boyfriend would have freaked. (Well, he didn't later, but at that time he would have)
My point is, I followed God's commandments and laws to the letter. I never drank. I never smoked. I was a virgin. I got excellent grades. I spent Monday nights teaching theatre to middle school kids at church, Tuesday we had NFL at school, Wednesday night I was at church until bedtime, Thursday night was Sports night with the youth at church, Friday and Saturday night I was with my church friends and I was there ALL day Sunday. That was my life. I had a great boyfriend that I loved being with. Obviously we had kissed, but I had NEVER felt the way I felt when Emma kissed me. It was sad because we were both too scared for it to ever happen again. At our 10 year reunion last year, she told me that not being with me was her biggest regret in life. She got married and divorced and now is beginning to come out.
That first kiss was God's gift and we were too scared of what people would think to be together. There is nothing wrong about it. God is love, not hate. And loves everyone. Even bigots.

Jersey -
That was amazing. And beautiful.
And, that you were blessed to find what makes you happy and makes you whole.
We are who we are. If you believe in God, then you must recognize that we are all created in his image.
All of us.

Plum - when we were at the Archives in DC I bought each of the kids a copy of the Constitution. When I was in Law School I kept a copy with me at all times.
My wife is British and has no clue as to the Constitution. Tonight we had our neighbor over for drinks and Thai. She was attacking him about abortion rights and asked me about the right to privacy.
4th, 5th and 14th Amendments are the answer!

This is a prime example of taking something too serious. I don't need you guys lecturing me, I will not tolerate it any longer because it is getting plan stupid, to the point that I'm not even mad, or even touched I'm just laughing at you. Some of you (and you know who you are) are just hypocrites, I don't agree with you and you personally attack me, and debate trying to insult my being and intelligence just because I don't see eye to eye with you. A certain someone mentioned turning 30, well if hadn't shared that info. I would've thought you were turning three. Now, will you please just stop all this back and forth, back and forth ok, because I don't even care anymore, if you want to get married get married I'm not the one you have to face at the end of the day.

"I am not the one you have to face at the end of the day"
So you are basically saying "you (expletives) are going to hell for this." At the same time you say that people shouldn't get personal.
This is a personal issue, these are peoples lives and loves.
I am sick of this type of misrepresentation of both the law and God.
People who hold opinions like yours are trying to stop people from having a loving, committed relationship, and equal legal status, and are disgracing God in order to do it.

NO!! I didn't mean it like that, because not everyone here believes in God. And please, stop painting with this brush like I'm some gay hating mongol! I said one thing and everyone's gone mad. Yeah so what I don't feel gays should marry so what. Who am I?! Will my opinion do anything No?! So why is everyone going nuts!?

Posted: 1/28/06 at 2:28amSee, here's what I'm not getting- why is a woman loving a man any different than a woman loving a woman? What's the difference, except for the gender of the partner? Either way, you're getting people who want to have a committed, stable relationship and raise a family. That's about as wholesome as it gets. The only justification I can see for the differentiaion between the genders of partners is a sexist one. And as I've said before, that's when I stop listening.

Plum - Well said.
Another thing that bothers me -
We have a Gay Straight Alliance at my school, open to anyone. I have a friend who is bisexual and she is very involved with the GSA. I would join it myself, but the meetings conflict with another club that I'm seriously involved in. Still, I try to attend their "Gayla" and other events.
Anyway, at my school, no one really cares if you're gay or not. There is rarely any bullying going on because of someone's sexual orientation. However, very few straight people will admit to having gay friends, and according to my friend in the GSA, there aren't many straight people in the club. I just find that very strange. If homosexuality is so accepted, then why are people afraid to admit they have gay, lesbian, or bisexual friends?
Another thing that I just thought of (10 AM and my brain starts working):
People who are against gay marriage keep talking about benefits and other things that two married people receive. What ever happened to marriage being about love? Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but marriage to me IS about love. Otherwise, how many people would really be married?

First, Burle - I have done my best to not attack your personal beliefts, because I have to give you some credit for being honest. We all have biases and prejudices, and I think we are just trying to show that this particular bias/prejudice is often rooted in something other than the bible; but rather, rooted in personal agendas of those claiming a close connection with the Bible and God.
Citing the 10 commandmans is a perfect example: Only a couple of those commandments have actually been translated to laws. And of those that do, they seem to exist in a form of natural law, (don't kill, don't steal, don't lie) so to cite the bible as the source of laws is wrong.
And, it angers many of us because if you go to the bible, there are many, many other commandments that are clearly contrary to what we deemed to be civilized society - if we were to seek enforcement of these commandments, it would undermine the very credibility of the book, it. Jersey can probably explain it better than it, but I thought there were about 613 commandments in all - why are only these 10 the one's held up to validate the importance of the book. It seems like cherry picking only those provisions that support your position.
So, many of us feel, wrongly or rightly, that somehow, someone has used the bible to justify your biases agains gays. If they can show the flaw in the logic behind your belief system, then perhaps it will expand your world view.
Remember the Truman Show? Kind of like when he hit the end of the sound stage in the boat and decided to see what else was out that they they wouldn't let him know about. Many of us are just trying to open the door for you.
And guitargeek: I think you answered you own questionH "owever, very few straight people will admit to having gay friends, and according to my friend in the GSA, there aren't many straight people in the club. I just find that very strange. If homosexuality is so accepted, then why are people afraid to admit they have gay, lesbian, or bisexual friends?" - because at you age it is much easier to say you accept homosexuality than actually participate in activities that demonstrate the fact. Many people are afraid of what others will think of them, especially in High School. It takes a very strong person to say - Dan is my gay friend, I love him, and always will, when you are 16 years old. Espeically if both you and Dan are men. People make assumptions, fair or not, and at 16, sometimes you have not developed the emotitional maturity to handle it. Yeah, it is an excuse, but it is one that makes sense to me.
And to answer your other question - marriage is not just about love, it is also about legal rights that accompany the marriage. When two people marry, many federal and state laws change - Gay couples, to the extent possible, have to execute legal documents to make it clear that they are the medical caregiver, that they belong in the room when their partner dies, that they know what medical treatments are desired. They would be entitled to proceeds under pension plans with private companies and social security. They could could receive benefits under a partnership benefit plan, such as medical and life insurance. It is not just the ceremony, but the legal consequences of the ceremony which people need to have.
I hope that makes sense.
Off for my coffee - I am sure there a plenty of typos in this one.

I believe in God.
I believe in the teachings of Christ.
I do not believe that God has anything wrong with two people (of the same or different sex) professing their love for one another.
And, no, the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. Many Biblical scholars (the ones without a political agenda) will tell you this. Jesus never said one single word against homosexuality.
