I also think it's a sick joke when someone lists five of their favorite performers and manages to spell three of their names wrong (as well as the abbreviation for et cetera).

Troll alert. He/She/It just wants attention. Screw it.

And since when is marriage part of the jurisdiction of the federal government?

But marriage SHOULD be a federal issue. Income tax and immigration are just two such reasons why it IS a federal issue.

Every lesbian couple should just find a gay couple and marry them. They can all live together and raise families. That would screw up the idea of a nuclear family and sufficiantly piss off Pat Robertson.

But, burl, as moral as you clearly are, I find this post to not be very "Christian":

"MOUTH DROPS OPEN* That has the feel of a very bad joke, with the most f--ked up ending"

So, I'm wondering why you aren't being more consistent with this new creature you have created for all of our "amusement".

I know there are some Christians who support gay marriage, I only bought up my religion before to make a point. Anyway, I just happen to be against gay marriage, not because I have anything against homosexuals I just think them getting married; in my eyes is pushing the envelope. That's it! THE END

Well, if one is going to voice bigoted opinions, one must expect that they will get a reaction.

One is perfectly allowed to believe that black people shouldn't marry white people, but what just DO you think everyone's reaction would be? TO BE CONTINUED

But, if I have been in a relationship with someone for years, and we are committed, why shouldn't she be allowed to be on my health plan? Why shouldn't we get the tax cut straight people do? Why shouldn't I be allowed to make critical decisions when she is sick? How does that hurt you or change your life in any way? With 70% of YOUR marriages ending in divorce, how can you say straight people deserve it so much more than we do?

No defending the view, but the right to hold it.

For some marriage has a unique term to it. I find it curious, to say the least, that I have friends that believe that while it is OK for gay couples to have civil ceremonies which would grant them the rights of a married couple under the law, they do not want the term "marriage" applied to a gay couple.

It is merely changing one term with another, but for some reason, the term marriage itself is the issue with some of these people - not necessarily the rights and underlying commitment that corresponds.

So, my question is, is it the term itself that offends, or the rights and commitment associated with the term that you find offensive?

Very good question, YWI. But I seriously do not believe that as many people placed such high reverence for the word before gay marriage became a hot topic. Don't for a moment believe that.

But a very good question and the answer is what is important.

When are they going to realize that there is no basis in the US system of law for a ban on same-sex marriage?

I'm a Christian myself, and I see no problem with making same-sex marraige legal. People say it's a sin, well, we all sin. Why should one group be punished and another group not? Besides, we're supposed to be compassionate and understanding. Many of the people of the Christian right have missed this memo.

Some older people, in particular, when I go though all of the rights that normally come with marraige, including tax status, pensions, SSN, Annuity Transfers to surviving spouses, adoption or raising your own if a lesbian couple . . .

They all said that they were fine with that. They just did not like the term marriage applying. They still, for some reason, think that the term marriage, applies only to a man and a woman. I think perhaps that they believe that if we apply the term marriage to gay couples, that it will someone change the meaning for straight couples. It is almost like an emotional attachment to a security blanket.

But for others, of course, it is just an excuse to hide their prejudice.

I do sympathize with the gay community I do, I feel they should have the same legal rights that straight people do, but the whole thing of them getting married is just like a slap in the face to the whole institution (IMO) My whole feelings on the gay marriage issue are rooted in my faith. God can only judge us, which is why I have nothing against gay people. This country is just focused on trying to please everyone that the whole system is screwed up. This country has no offical religion yet, when it comes to gay marriage we preach Christian values to make their marriage illegal if we would just come out and say we are a Christian nation and it says in clear print about God's opinion on gay marriage we wouldn't have this whole mess. Everything is just a mess, and I know there are countries like England which is a Christian country that allows Gay marriage, which I think is just dumb on their part. But hey, who are we to say anything?

A Freakin' OFFICIAL religion for the country? Are you smoking crack? This country was formed out of FREEDOM of religeon...and what makes you so god damned sure that the religeon of choice would be Christianity? From what I see - you are not much of a poster child for it darling.

Cheezdoodle calm down! I never said Christianity should be the offical religion all I said was as long as we're siding with the word of God on gay marriage then yes Christianity would make sense.

JRB, you don't want my sympathy? NO COMMENT.

I think the big distinction here, as someone who has not future vested in this argument and could therefore be talking out of her ass, is whether you view marriage as solely a religious ceremony.

I think the term marriage has been applied to those ceremonies performed by religious representatives, and by civil authorities.

If the issue is compelling a church to perform a religious ceremony, I actually agree that the state should not be able to do that. If a church wants to - that is wonderful.

But, marriage and the issuance of a marriage license is something done by the local governments, with ceremonies performed by justices of the peace, by captains on ships. It is not just something done by religious institutions.

I think there is a huge difference between telling a church you have to marry a gay couple, and legalizing gay marriage. One does not necessariliy have anything to do with the other.
