Where is that @ssholy Pat Robertson and the Religious Right yelling at us that Isaac is God's punsihment to the Red States? Why so silent, Pat?

My father actually noted how pissed Romney looked during that speech when he finally got mentioned. Even Michael Steele and other Republicans, though fond of the speech, were unhappy at how long it took for Romney to come up.

And Santorum doing the bidding of the party with the regurgitation of those false welfare claims (which I thankfully missed)? Surprised at how unsurprised I am.

Dan Savage seemed to really get into Ann Romney's distinction of 'real marriage' which caught on Twitter among him, his followers, and a few other LGBTQ activists noting that their relationships are 'unreal' in the RNC bubble.

"Dan Savage seemed to really get into Ann Romney's distinction of 'real marriage' which caught on Twitter among him, his followers, and a few other LGBTQ activists noting that their relationships are 'unreal' in the RNC bubble"

Which irks me all the more since my gay cousin's partner of 12 years recently "liked" Mitt Romney on Facebook. It was enough to almost make me delete him.

I'm also reading comments from some Republican friends of mine in CT, who unanimously agreed that they liked all the speeches last night and how there wasn't any nastiness involved. I can't comment on the nastiness (or lack thereof) as I refused to watch.

I didn't watch really except for the beginning of Christie's speech. I didn't need to watch because he 99% of the time comes off seeming like a jerk.

I give credit where credit is due. My hats off to the very classy Republicans. I have major differences with them but we need to see them do stuff like this more often!

http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/republicans-blast-inexcusable-convention-incident-against-cnn-camerawoman/

If Rush Limbaugh or a Fox News anchor said and did the exact same thing I hope they would respond in the same way.

I watched about 3 minutes of Christie's speech and unlike Chris at Old Country buffet, ever, I decided I'd had enough. The consensus today is that his speech was awful- all about Chris and nothing about Mitt. Christie has been working the convention trying to shore up his reputation and has his staff trying to shift the blame to Romney saying his camp signed off on the speech two weeks ago.

Christie is laying ground for 2016. He's got three years to lose at least a hundres pounds if he wants the nomination.

I'm not watching. It's so freeing. But I saw a second of Christie leaving the podium. He as actually spherical. I know it's unkind to notice (or at least remark) about things like that. But, it's just so jarring to see a public figure in that kind of shape. He's like the first five minutes of Biggest Loser.

Since the GOP seems to be all about turning back the clock, maybe Christie should just put on a chesterfield coat, grow a big old Taft mustache, and go with it.

Analysts noted afterward that since Paul Ryan took so long to mention Mitt Romney's name, in a speech supposedly ABOUT nominating, um, Romney, he's laying groundwork for 2016, too.

He started out fine, but he finally started getting reaction from the crowd when he started saying smug things directed at Obama (who is, last I checked, still the PRESIDENT and deserves respect, which has been discussed before, and applies in this case, too).

I just don't like this smug attitude some GOP's have been more than willing to express, the last few years. I was in a FB discussion during the speech and asked: is the smug-ness a note of desperation, or do these leaders and would-be leaders of our country actually think Middle America *wants* to be spoken to, like that? I certainly don't. I want my leaders to be smarter than me--and I'm pretty smart. But talking down to people isn't going to get cheers out of me, the way it got it out of that convention audience.

I am not a person who really believes in party politics or labels, though of course do believe in standing up for one's pet issues. But blaming the President for "not correcting the [10-year] housing crisis" that Bush started, when the GOP half of Congress has done nothing but stifle him the entire way--out of party loyalty rather than UNITING the United State--is just...offensive. It really doesn't make me want people who think that way, to be my representative, or my Pres or VP. How people can cheer for that is beyond me.

On top of that, doesn't anyone think they should have postponed the whole darn thing and gone to visit hurricane victims or held a telethon or something, instead? ANYTHING but all this self-important posturing. Do they think the hurricane victims even give a crap about *voting* right now, when they're more concerned with, you know, food and electricity and shelter??

What is different about this convention from any convention I can recall is that the convention, the platform and the candidate are all saying different things. Usually the platform is a HUGE fight as it is THE document that lays out what the party stands for. I think it was 1992 when the DNC laid down the law that NO speaker would take the dais without pledging 100% endorsement of the platform- bumping several pro-life Dems off teh schedule.

This convention features a presidential candidate who has openly said he doesn't even KNOW what the platform says much less if he agrees with it (which you could assume he doesn't from what he's said). I think it's because the RNC knows that their hard-line views are out-of-step with America but figure if they paint Obama as the anti-Christ and Mittens as warm and cuddly they might get lucky.

That 1992 thing is completely true. Bob Casey Sr. was removed from the dais and Pat Buchanan even mentioned him in his culture war speech because that damn Clinton and the DNC dais had the gall to acknowledge gay people.

Condi Rice's speech was lovely, almost befitting to seamlessly be woven into the DNC (to the point I wondered if the Romney campaign kicked themselves for not having her do the keynote), but I have no clue how her speech can be with the likes of Huckabee, Ryan, Santorum, and Christie. Not because of her race or that she is a woman, though that is certainly a real distinction that the GOP seems consciously aware of given the diversity of the dais, it is that she is foreign policy and frankly, nobody on the floor, including elected officials, have any clue of what the Romney-Ryan foreign policy is except they probably want no defense cut budgets even in supposed peace-time.

Rice's speech was most notable for her bizarre final paragraph celebrating that a poor black child can dream of growing up to be Secretary of State without acknowledging that a poor black child HAS (grown up to be president).

Her inability to cite ANY Obama foreign policy errors on the Today Show did not stop her from complaining about Obama foreign policy errors at the convention, thank God.

Her post-convention speech was not impressive for sure. Making the OBL death a two-administration victory is more than a little laughable.

I also do not think she actually hates or thinks low of the Obama Administration or Obama for that matter. She is trying to get back into government beyond just being administration-appointed and believe me, going from appointed to elected office are horses of different colors.

I am frankly puzzled by her convention appearance. Mitt Romney threw her under the bus when his campaign leaked the (entirely false) rumor she was being vetted as a possible VP to distract the media from his tax problem. Then, when she was instantly attacked as a RINO by many in the party, he failed to support her- at all. She also seems to think Obama is OK. It seemed last time around she either supported him over McCain or thought it was close enough to sit on her hands.

It would be interesting to see her run for office. I'd love to see her defend her record as the National Security Adviser who allowed the worst terrorist attack in history.

People still fawn over her background and intelligence that I definitely think the older, WASP-y, Yankee Republicans who are major donors to the party want her. Now, I think this new group of Republicans will eat her alive and even if she does get into elected office she is an outlier rather than a singular figure who will bring back the Republican party closer to the perceived center. At best she'll be a Scott Brown or an Olympia Snowe/Susan Collins. Well-liked by constituents that cross the political spectrum and somebody the Republicans can use on the Sunday morning talk show circuit to modify the crazy from the rest of the party. That is still underestimating the fact, as Joe mentioned, that people still remember the Bush years and a very arrogant, costly, and frankly, just evil foreign policy that she was a major part of as HSA and SoS.

It's the outright repeated and gleeful lying that seems to be part of the new low in conventions. We've come to expect it from PAC ads that candidates can disavow, but now they're all getting up on the stage and just making **** up.

You know if professional athletes can be fined for all manner of misconduct from criticizing other players, to not being available to the press after a game, maybe it's time to start fining politicians for lying. how about $100,000 fine for Ryan saying that Obama closed a GM plant that closed before he even took office?

If they choose to lie, make them pay.

Despite his completely misleading "Poor me" back story, $100,000 is chump change to Mr. Ryan who has more money in his campaign war chest than any other member of congress.

I'd much rather make them pay this November.
