Gay Couple for Desperate Housewives

"When Teri Hatcher slid into a seat next to Marc Cherry at the ABC Press Tour party last Thursday night in Los Angeles, she was all ears and wide-eyed as her Desperate Housewives boss was discussing one of her storylines for next season with me and a few other reporters.
Cherry, his voice growing hoarse from non-stop interviews, surprised us by revealing something for the first time: around episode five, we may be seeing a rainbow flag hanging outside one of the homes on Wisteria Lane. It seems that Hatcher's character of sweet and bumbling Susan – who married hunky Mike Delfino (Janes Denton) in the season finale – will get new next door neighbors with whom she will instantly clash and, they will be... a gay couple!
That's right: Desperate Housewives, which had frustratingly put the storyline of gay teen Andrew Van De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom) on the back burner in Season 3, is finally having its first same-sex couple move into the neighborhood. "We're going to have the first male desperate housewives," said Cherry, the show's gay creator and head writer. "They will move into the old Applewhite house and one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Teri Hatcher.""

Wait.
What's the stereotype? That gay people have fractious, hateful relationships w/ Terri Hatcher?

Calling the gay men "houseWIVES" doesn't sound very promising, does it?

Speaking as a gay - and very desperate - housewife, I'm glad to be represented.
And I would SO not get along with that Hatcher woman.
Now, Marcia Cross, on the other hand . . .

Cherry might have chosen to say "gay couple" instead of "male desperate housewives."
We can just agree to feel differently about it. I am offended. You're not.

Oh, please, he was just alluding to the title of the show. After all he was there to promote his show.
And as an aspiring gay housewife myself, I'm glad to be represented on TV as well
This may bring some much needed excitement to the show after a hit-and-miss third season that went nowhere. I actually had forgotten Susan got married, I loved crazy single Susan, hopefully she'll be as crazy now that she's married.
I wonder who will be playing the gay couple...
What's the stereotype? That gay people have fractious, hateful relationships w/ Terri Hatcher?
I laughed out loud...

Awesome. While I understand WBAF's concerns about stereotyping, I don't think Cherry meant to be offensive. That being said, I hope both of the gay men are really hot!
#11re: Gay Couple for Desperate Housewives
Posted: 7/30/07 at 3:30pmI think if Cherry weren't gay, I might have found it a little offensive. Since he is out and proud (if hideously Republican) and since he provided a rather riveting, non-stereotypical gay character (Andrew), I'm willing to cut him some slack.

Posted: 7/30/07 at 3:41pmI hope they're not hot. I'd like to see an average-looking older gay couple instead of the typical hot gay men.

Posted: 7/30/07 at 3:46pmThe show is called Desperate Housewives, which is probably why he phrased like that. I don't yet see how this is a stereotype.
#14re: Gay Couple for Desperate Housewives
Posted: 7/30/07 at 7:23pmI hope they get Andrew in a 3way. And wasn't Rodger Bart's character end up being gay? Or did he just come off that way?
#15re: Gay Couple for Desperate Housewives
Posted: 7/30/07 at 8:50pmRoger Bart's character was obsessed with Bree. Definately not gay.

"Well, it's not David Beckham and Robbie Williams, but this'll do.
Desperate Housewives has tapped One Life to Live's Tuc Watkins and ex-Judging Amy actor Kevin Rahm to play Wisteria Lane's first gay couple. Watkins will play Bob, described as a country mouse who leaves the big city for greener (and quieter) pastures. Rahm is his bitchy partner, Lee. Both roles are of the recurring variety.
Interestingly, the characters' names are a tribute to ABC News' Bob Woodruff and his wife Lee, whom series creator Marc Cherry befriended last spring."

Gay or straight.....either way, DH is a great show and I'm looking forward to the new season.

Posted: 8/14/07 at 4:52pmI really liked Rahm in his guest-starring role in GREY'S ANATOMY, never seen Watkins acting though. I guess there are going to be four new neighbors in Wisteria Lane? That should make this season more interesting than the last one.

Desperate Housewives is definately my favorite show on TV because the writing and acting are sooo intelligent.
I'm glad the creatives are adding a new dynamic into the homes of Wisteria Lane.

What's all the fuss and feathers about?
Almost every TV show has at least one gay character these days. So now "Desperate Housewives" has jumped on the bandwagon.
Maybe they'll have to change the name of the show to "Disparate Housewives".
