So what is everyone doing to celebrate Pride Month?
Here in Louisville this weekend is our Pride. Today kicks off with a parade (I didn't say a big parade, but a parade). Tomorrow we have a big festival at our waterfront park.
What fun times are planned in your neck of the woods?

My city's pride week isn't until the end of July. There's all kinds of fun stuff - a 'dykes vs. divas' baseball game (lesbians versus drag queens!) to start off a week of activities. There's ususally a gay harbour cruise, which I'm looking forward to! As well as (to just name a few) book/poetry readings from gay artists, movie nights for LGBT youth, spa/sauna nights for the ladies and men and the week ends off with the parade and a night of parties at a few local bars. :)
I can't wait!

I am going to the San Francisco Gay Pride. I will take a lot of photos and post it here. This would be an interesting year bec. gay marriage was legalized in CA!

Working for the Obama campaign at the Sacramento Gay Pride parade. Should be pretty great in light of everything that's happened this past month.

My plans are to be away that weekend, as I live a block from Sheridan Square. I can barely get the door open to my apartment building because of the one million people on my block!
But I do hope it's a great weekend with good weather for all the folks!

Posted: 6/20/08 at 8:42pmWhile I completely honor and respect diversity, I just could ever understand the point of Gay Pride. After all there's no such thing as Straight Pride Day, or Norwegian Day, or anything like that. I know, I'll get hell for posting this.

oh dont worry about it, nealb1~that's why we have discussion board:
Gay pride advocates work for equal "rights and benefits" for LGBT people. The movement has three main premises: that people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, that sexual diversity is a gift, and that sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered. Marches celebrating Pride (pride parades) are celebrated worldwide. Symbols of LGBT pride include the rainbow flag, the Greek lambda symbol, and the pink as well as black triangles reclaimed from their past use.

I mean think about your statement nealb1. We don't take a day to celebrate straight people or white people, etc. because that is the dominate culture. It is celebrated every day! Other groups get relegated "a day" so that they can feel what the dominate group gets to feel like all the time.

Posted: 6/20/08 at 11:46pmIt is Pride weekend here in Denver. Our parade and festival are on Sunday. I haven't been in about 4 years. It really has turned into a drunkfest. I am a gay man, but I really don't feel we need a parade anymore. Just my opinion! I have a good friend visiting and he wants to go. So I will go this year.

"After all there's no such thing as Straight Pride Day, or Norwegian Day"
last time I checked, straight people and Norwegians have rights gay people don't....such as the right to be allowed into a loved ones hospital room, such as the right to NOT have a family member of a gay couple take the house away....
Norwegians and straights are not discriminated against in adopting children, nor do they have to fight family members who try to take a legal document (a will) and overturn it.
Neal, I can honestly say I have seen a more stupid statement on this board.....and considering the nuts we have here, that says a lot.

And the second and third largest parades in Chicago are the Puerto Rican Day Parade and the Bud Billikin (A mythical black figure) prade. The St. Patrick's Day Parade is huge also. All of them are variations on the "Pride" parade. People in that subsection gather to celerate their traditions and folklore.

Posted: 6/21/08 at 8:11amI usually go to the Pride Parade every year (here in nyc) and often touched by the many businesses that show their support. I know it is advertising for them, but it also shows they are supportive of the rights that the LGBT community are fighting for. The only problem I have with the parade is that in the last few years businesses like Rentboy etc have a large presence. I think gay pride has come so far overcoming some of these "oversexualized" stereotypes and things like Rentboy bring that down. I don't think advocating prostitution is something to be proud of. Just my opinion.

St. Patrick's Day is pretty much Irish Pride Day.
Cinco De Mayo is pretty much a Mexican Pride Day.
