Posted: 2/21/09 at 1:31pmAbsolutely disgusting. I'd sue the theater's ass off and not shut up about it until something was done.

Posted: 2/22/09 at 5:13amThis is just disgusting and so wrong. I agree that it's almost expected (or at least a form of sad-understandable) in the sticks, but right here in New York? I'm not sure what bothers me more - that there are still groups of boys with so much hate towards people like me that they would not only utter some hate speech, but actually turn it into an attack, or the fact that management did nothing? It's just horrendous. I almost want to go to that theater just to speak to management and air my grievances, but I suppose I'll just settle for never going there. Can't call it a boycott since I don't live in New York, but ironically I probably would have gone there tomorrow anyway. I have Uncle Vanya (around the area) for matinee and afterward I was planning on catching some Oscar-nominated thing before tonight's telecast. So much for that.

Posted: 2/22/09 at 5:29amYeah, surely those people were from the sticks and came to NYC just to bash a couple of gays. You don't really think that any kind of predjudice exsists in NYC? Updated On: 2/22/09 at 05:29 AM

i'm not saying it's right, but were you there? how do you know they didn't actually provoke this "attack" by threatening those poor boys with their gay-osity. i think we need to look at the kind of environment in which those boys were raised before you go blaming them for this "attack." probably those poor children didn't even know they were doing something wrong by whuppin' on the queers.

I've had people utter gay slurs at me for just walking down the street in broad daylight. It is everywhere, and it is really a shame. I will never go to that cinema again. I do hope something will be done about this theatre and the men responsible for the attacking.

I've had people utter gay slurs at me for just walking down the street in broad daylight.
Then how do they know you're gay?
re: Gay bashing at Regal Union Square movie theater?#10
Posted: 2/22/09 at 9:50amI've heard people yell gay slurs at anyone they suspect might be gay, soley based on appearance. Even if they're not. It's offensive either way.

The other night, on my own block, in the middle of the west village, I saw two cretins call one guy "faggot" for just walking down the street. It was right in front of me. The one guy just kept walking and ignored them, but I yelled out "assholes" (the NYer's term for stupid people).
Of course, right after that, I realized how stupid I was for yelling that out because jerks like that may have had weapons on them, or even could have decided to beat me up, but I was so angry I couldn't help it.

See, I am not of the school of thought that young New Yorkers always in fact carry weapons on them. Maybe it's a perception that older people have about people in New York around my age, I don't know.
What happened was in fact sick and wrong. But, am I the only one who thought that some of the comments about the article were a bit over the top? Like, to the point of disgusting

Taking Winston for his word, I deleted my post.

Yes, Winston, the comments below the article were bordering on racist when I first posted it and I know see they've crossed the line to blatant. Funny, because not once in the article does it mention the race of the alleged attackers. Besides, the lion's share of people in the city I've heard shouting "faggot" from the street in NYC has been white guys, in particularly the ones who still do their hair like the Gotti boys and seem to have an endless supply of jeans and button-up white shirts in their wardrobe. But I digress.
Also to those who thinks this only happens in the sticks, believe me, New York City is no oasis from gay bashers. No city is. When I was walking the streets in Copenhagen, the land of those docile gay-accepting Scandanavians, some of the guys I was hanging out with warned me that walking hand in hand at night might make you an easy target for some roving gangs who like to target gay guys for muggings.
At any rate, I usually err on the side of caution when it comes to becoming outraged about unconfirmed reports (witness the recent accusation of a gay bashing at Corner Bistro when in reality, the guy was being a drunken jackass who struck the guy he was accusing, an employee of the place, first, as was confirmed by surveillance video). But it sounds like there already are plenty of reasons to avoid Regal as it is. Plus, this sounds like a very plausible story, as obnoxious louts in a movie theater hardly requires a stretch of imagination.

I didn't make anything up. So get off your high horse and stop assuming that I was talking about you. If you (which I doubt you did) read the comments from article, there were some similar statements to the ones that you made. It isn't always about you.

Winston, I did read some of the comments after the article but not all of them.
I made a mistake thinking you were replying to my post, since you posted right after mine and you addressed the exact same things I addressed.
If you weren't referring to my post, please excuse my post to you.
I don't think it's all about me. Human error.
