Thank you. One does what one can to express one's viewpoint, informed over the years as it was, when one is told one MUST get reservations and be making plans for events that don't seem to reflect one's priorities as one has come to define them through one's personal activist history.
If one can speak generally.

Namo, thanks for taking the time to post that.
So, basically, because the Advocate and groups like it, were so effective in painting picture of what a "safe" gay looked like, and so many people bought into that image, it is undermining the reality of the community.
My best friend growing up was a gay Latino, and he aspired to many of the myths you describe. I wonder if the messaging in some ways started to create the myths as self-fulfilling prophecy.
Oh, and the Disney thing - is that a myth or a fact?

ABSOLUTELY! There was one specific moment when a switch flipped in my head and I thought, "Oh, I think I have to secede from this so-called 'gay community.'"
I was at a sold-out screening of the documentary about the gay erotic artist Tom of Finland called "Daddy & The Muscle Academy." It begins with a montage of his over-exaggerated muscle cartoons with voice overs of real gay men saying things like "I'm a Tom's man," "His images were my role models" and the like.
Although I had long been disappointed in the phenomenon you describe, YWIW, of people trying to be the Advocate image, this was the first time I actually saw real life gay men casually saying they were remaking themselves into cartoons!

"What are those myths (and do you repeat them)? Oh, gay people don't have kids so they have TONS OF DISPOSABLE INCOME! They LOVE to take vacations! They are better educated than the average American! They are so smart and so tasteful, they earn more money than straight people! The list goes on and on."
Some of those myths have been proven as fact.
