Hey guys,
This is truly the gayest question (maybe not ever, but at least today).
I have to get out to Fire Island before the end of the summer season to see a friend's show. Problem is, I can't find ANYTHING by way of affordable housing. I'm just not in the mood to bring a duffel bag on the hope and a promise that I'll find a place to crash, you know.
Anyone have any advice? Websites? Previous experiences? Something under an arm and a leg would be best.

"Something under an arm and a leg would be best. "
that's hot.
Well, my dear, first you need a better class of friends :)
Why better class of friends? This isn't about their class, it's about mine and I'm low rent all the way.
in that case, try the dunes.
I have some standards. Some, I say. I want a room. Plus, my boyfriend will be with me. You and your man can swing all you want but this girl's got standards.
Well, then, curling up on the beach can be fun...just be careful where you lay your head, etc.
Reference above "I want a room" quote.
miss thing is high maintenance.
In my effort to be helpful in a topic I know absolutely nothing about by stating the obvious, how is the lodging on the other side of the ferry crossing?
Oh, I misread it as "I want room" and I thought...what's roomier than the beach?
I have no leads, of course, but hope someone PMs you with a promise of a whole wing free.
Oh, Wing!
Calvin, you are most helpful in all areas of which you have no knowledge.
i'd love to be helpful but it is just not my niche.
No, but I imagine this will crop up as an image topic on the old hands thread before long.
We all stick with what we know.
Calvin, the only problem with that is the ferry stops running fairly early. As this friend is a drag queen, the logical conclusion here is "show will be over late, therefore, local accommodation will be necessary."
"No, but I imagine this will crop up as an image topic on the old hands thread before long.
We all stick with what we know. "
that was a dig, wasn't it?
Repeat: we all stick with what we know.
The Calvin solution would be: Party until dawn, then crash on the LIRR return trip.
It might just have to come to that.
Of course, the bonus for YOU in that scenario is that you won't get a call begging you to keep the Elphapug.
*ahem*
Arr I runt iss a loom sumwherrr...fall aray flum da corrd night air!
*bows* Tank you, tank you...I sing evey-ting!
Calvin has the best back up plan I've ever heard...if that's the worst case scenario, you'll have a great time.
is the "under an arm and a leg" a reference to cost or to proximity to the host? try Craigslist (for either alternative).
And why does this whole thread remind me of the film LIE DOWN WITH DOGS?!?!?
Okay.
Speaking as someone who had a share for many years (I met PalJoey'sPal waiting for the ferry in Sayville 12 years ago--but that's another story), I'm sorry to say there's no good solution.
The one hotel and the one guesthouse in Cherry Grove (where I assume your drag-queen friend is performing)--are hideous and overpriced. The one hotel and one (illegal) guesthouse in the Pines are just as hideous and even MORE overpriced.
Most people rent share houses for the season (in the Pines, usually 4 bedrooms, 2 in each, with smaller houses in the Grove). None of the rooms are ever usually empty, except in the event of illness or overdose--or a really big fight among housemates.
No one's friends are ever usually allowed to crash on the living-room couch because, well, "If YOU do it, then why can't I do it, bitch?!"
Your only hope is to find a house with a spare room--usually one owned by a wealthy older man or a couple...and bat your eyelashes and do whatever you have to in order to get that room.
Or else, book something at the Cherry Grove Beach Hotel or the Belvedere (think Grey Gardens) or the Hotel Ciel in the Pines (formely the Botel).
I say Belvedere. It's the most picturesque.
Put it this way, you'll never forget having stayed at the Belvedere.
Also, no one will believe you: "Where are you staying?" "At the Belvedere." "No, really. Where are you staying?"
Right-plus, if you're going to do it, may as well do it all the way, if you get my drift~
