here's good information directly from the FDA website for information on at home HIV kits. (i cannot believe that i was stupid enough to use a non FDA-approved device, but i guess i was...)

Well, Mamie, not to jack this thread too much becauseI'm VERY glad people are talking about STI testing, but I honestly though the filter block was going to asterisk it out.

Yes, this is a great thread. People need to stay informed about safe sex and their status.
When bway and I get Gay Bash up and running, we are going to do a show about this topic. It's a neverending issue.

ABsolutely!I hope I haven't come off as suggesting a test is sufficient.
For lots of people who really don't know what to do, though, this is a GREAT start. GO get tested. Talk to the HIV counselor, the doctor, about what you need to do to be safe. I don't know about the city health services (given the crappy hoops the current White House Administration is requiring you to jump through for federal funding) but places like Callen-Lorde offer VERY pro-sex safety discussions. THey're all about you having the sex that YOU enjoy as safely as possible.

Posted: 11/29/06 at 1:30pmThe clinic in Chicago (at least the one in Lakeview) offers a compulsory safe sex seminar while you wait (and wait you do). The whole thing was very non-judgmental, basically just repeating the fact to wrap it up if you're going to use it. Although I've always tried to keep myself knowledgeable, but I learned some things I didn't know, such as the fact that syphilis can be transmitted simply from skin to skin contact or that men should try to urinate as soon as possibly after orgasm, as that can help you flush out any bacteria, etc.

One point I'd like to further point out, is that back in the day, I worked at Callen Lorde and other HIV/STD medical facilities...what I saw over and over again was cross infection of all these diseases between partners/married people - gay and straight. Noone wants to think about their partner possibly cheating, but the possibility is always there...deal with it rationally and like an adult. Get tested and talk to your partner.

Or if non-kids could take a little more initiative to learn how to protect themselves and actually do it. I'm constantly astounded at the risks taken by people who should know better.
And I'm not judging or pointing fingers here. It's easy to screw up and I'd never say that I've never had a lapse in judgement in all my years of sexual activity. I'm just amazed how many people seem to never exercise any judgement.
