Coming before others is SO f'ing rude!
I betcha fall asleep right after too!
and bway, I adore you for starting this thread...I was writing before, had to work, and now it's irrelevant.
(I know...that never stopped me from posting before!)

Yes, this is a great thread. People need to stay informed about safe sex and their status.
When bway and I get Gay Bash up and running, we are going to do a show about this topic. It's a neverending issue.

I think Kringas brings up something that maybe can give some comfort to others--truth: most of us have made mistakes. we have to empower ourselves with knowledge about safe sex. we need to get tested. but we also need to accept that we aren't perfect. and upon that truth we can start making smarter choices for ourselves and not beat ourselves up. I think when we beat ourselves up about something, we fail more. I know this to be true of dieting! lol

I wasn't aware I needed to be, but thanks for dragging it off-topic yet again.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 1:08amThere's no need to apologize, Bway. Today just seemed like Crazy Threadjack Day. Almost every thread I've waded through never stayed on topic for more than a post or two (and I'm guilty of jacking now, so it's like I'm in some sort of meta-loop). My comment wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, and it wasn't a dig on this thread, because I think it's the kind of thread I'd like to see more of on here - actual information begin disseminated about actual issues.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 1:10amAnd I agree 100%. There are a gazillion chat threads. Let's let threads like this stay on topic. PLEASE.

No, I understand now, Kringas. I agree that there really is only so many times you can say something about this topic but if people only read it from the beginning until the point of the (relatively) brief jack in the middle, then I'm satisfied.
And Brdlwyr, thanks for adding non-sti testing in there! Both of my parents recently had minor health scares and earlier testing would have prevented even that.

recounting our personal experiences is a good way to help educate ourselves and others. the exchange yesterday between several posters and me helped me to learn more about at home testing kits.
that, and it is very interesting to hear about how testing is done in other states and how the results are given.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 8:40amJust wondering ... do all your actual conversations with friends stay on topic for the duration? No, right? Why should a thread. My experience is that when the topic is important, interesting, and there is valued discussion the conversation will always find it's way back to that topic. Then too, you can always bring it back on topic yourself. I need coffee and ... get TESTED!

I never said otherwise! The jack thread was a joke in a way, after recalling when I created the original one. And we were having the same conversation on four threads so I was hoping beyond hope it wouldn't happen on my one attempt at a serious thread in ages.
It's also hard not to be touchy about the subject. I was motivated to go get screened for everything because my cousin, who had HIV, is now enjoying full-blown AIDS among a couple of other things. Those "other" things could have been staved off by earlier detection and treatment...and, of course, the HIV could have been prevented if he had armed himself with better information. So I got a little touchy about it.

Hey, it's perfectly ok. I didn't feel like volunteering the information since, you know, people love to keep spreadsheets and databases on anything you say here so they can trot the info out a few years later. Besides, it's really nobody's business but my cousin's.
And I'll take that coffee now, too, SOMMS.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 8:51amActually Bway that was more of a generic you/your and more a question for Kringas. I love that you started the conversation and am totally in agreement with you as to it's importance. I'm of the first generation and my personal loss is great. Get informed, get smart, get tested!!!

Posted: 11/30/06 at 8:54amYeah, I have to say, my experience with some of the bigger STIs is REALLY rather limited. But I know a lot of younger guys, many of whom are still moving into the city to "live it up" away from home, and are engaging in all of those dangerous activities that keep raising the rates of infection again and it freaks me out a little. I really do dread the day a close friend under 30 tells me he's positive. Or has Hep C.

Posted: 11/30/06 at 8:57amThis is a very important thread and it should stay at the top as long as possible. Sometimes we may wander off the original topic, but as long as we keep this thread at the top is all that really matters to me. So now that I've been tested can I have a Cocktail ?
