Posted: 11/29/06 at 10:35amI get my test results over the phone. But the lab is in Canada, so I'm not sure if that makes it different.

You know -- in the past I haven't been able to get the results over the phone, but this time, I just got a card that said to call. Well, at least if they tell me I have to come in, I shouldn't be too freaked out.
Oh, and RobbO, dying to hear it now.

I don't know if the law varies from state to state or what. Any time I've gotten an HIV test done at a doctor's office I could get the results by phone. Any other place (clinic, Planned Parenthood, etc) would give all results except HIV over the phone.
FYI - If you're really skittish about going in for an HIV test, you can do it yourself at home. I've used the Home Access tests before. It costs around fifty bucks, but if you want total privacy and don't want to have to ever deal with a face to face person, it's another option.

Kel - my female doctor does the same thing and I'm one of the little old ladies who are happy to know and talk about the results.
Because of some meds I'm now on, I get various kinds of testing done every month. I ask them to include everything they can. (As long as they're removing my juices anyway, I might as well get the whole story!)
A click for life.

wow, calvin, over the phone. that's a pretty sweet deal. the last time i was tested in april, the woman did the test orally and i sat in the room with her while she asked me more questions. the results were just two feet away, waiting to be read. she placed the tube on the counter with a cup over it and then set an egg timer for 10 minutes. it was the longest 10 minutes of my life, i think.
i don't know if that was better or worse than when i would get tested and then have to come back two weeks later for results. one time i got really scared as i sat in the chair waiting for my number to be called. just before i was called the doctor came out of a room, grabbed a folder, and said quietly to himself, "oh, how i hate to do this.." and then called my number. i thought i was poz for sure. luckily i was not and am not.
when i went this past time, i talked to the woman about what it was like to give results - both poz and neg. it was very interesting to hear her talk. she was a large, black woman with a cane and spoke so candidly in a way that only a large, black woman with a cane can.

kringas, you just have to be careful with those as they are not FDA approved or regulated. i did it once and it says that if even the slightest bit of red/pink shows up, it is a positive.
after waiting well past the timeframe for the results to show up, mine did ( i think) turn the slightest bit of pink. i think. it was so difficult to tell/read. i wound up going to a hospital clinic that i had been to many times before just to make sure. that was years ago, and i remain neg. to this day. **knocks on wood**
just be careful about using the at-home kits.

Posted: 11/29/06 at 10:48amAbout a month or so before I moved to Chicago, I got tested at one of the AIDS organizations in St Louis. After ten days, my results weren't in. After two weeks, they weren't in. Long story short, they never came in before I moved. It was rather nerve-wracking (although since they were providing me a free service there wasn't much I could do except deal), but they told me something interesting - it was their experience that positive results came back a lot quicker than negative results and that if there was a problem, they most likely wouldn't have taken so long to come back. I'm not sure if that's really the case or not, but it put my mind at ease to a degree. I still went out and got another test right after my move was complete.

Robbo, was it the actual "Home Access" brand? Because that's the only home one I've ever used and it's my understanding that those were FDA approved. It's been a few years since I've used it, but I collected the blood myself and sent it off. I still had to call in for the results.
Per their website: HAHC is the only company approved by FDA to provide at-home testing for HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV)

i thought it was home access but it was not fda approved at the time, to my recollection. for the test i did, i had to ****my finger and put the blood on two test strips. if it turned red/pink in a certain timeframe, it was poz. it is didn't it was neg.
only thing is ( i later found) that most of the results turn pink at some point after the 8-10 minute timeframe. and, again, i wasn't sure if mine actually turned. it was very nerve wracking and didn't instill a lot of confidence in me, as to the result (or, at the very least, my ability to correctly interpret the results.)

The new ones are the ones that are still up for debate and FDA approval, right? The ones where you basically do the equivalent of a home pregnancy test and pee on a stick.

The Home Access test has always been the same and is not the one you used RobbO. For Home Access you stick your finger and fill a circle with your blood. You then mail the sample to a lab and call for your results in 7-10 days. It is FDA approved.

that sounds like what i did, somms, only without the mailing it in part. i researched it and was looking for something that was fda approved, and i recall the home access name but i must be mistaken about which product i used.

here's good information directly from the FDA website for information on at home HIV kits. (i cannot believe that i was stupid enough to use a non FDA-approved device, but i guess i was...)

Well, Mamie, not to jack this thread too much becauseI'm VERY glad people are talking about STI testing, but I honestly though the filter block was going to asterisk it out.
