Isn't it amazing how the concept of 'progess' has become a bad thing . . .

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
This country is so divided to what are quickly becoming Nazi-like puppets of Beck and Palin and people with a brain. I don't see how this is NOT going to devolve into a civil war. It's only a matter of time before someone (most likely someone on "their" side) does something stupid like attempt an assassination - and bam, it's 1861 all over again.

I read Beck's speech and one thing jumped out at me: He said "We must defend those we disagree with."
Can anyone think of a time when Glen Beck defended someone he disagreed with?

Which is why I urge Glenn Beck and all his followers to join me in financially supporting the American Civil Liberties Union.

Jason - it almost happened last month, and is almost assuredly going to happen again . . .
From the Portland Examiner:
"Aug 01, 2010 - The homegrown terror plot foiled by police in Oakland, California in the early morning hours of July 18th had all the potential of a full-fledged and deadly attack on progressive organizations.
The suspect accused in a shootout with California Highway Patrol officers told officials that he planned to attack two nonprofit groups in San Francisco "to start a revolution," according to a probable cause statement released by police.
Bryon Williams, 45, a convicted felon with two prior bank robbery convictions, targeted workers at the American Civil Liberties Union and the Tides Foundation, said Oakland police Sgt. Michael Weisenberg in court documents.
While the ACLU is a favorite whipping boy of the radical right, not many people have heard of the Tides Foundation. Unless, of course, they listen to Glenn Beck.
Beck has decided to make the Tides Foundation a target, attacking the group again and again from his pulpit.
Media Matters reports that since January 19th, 2009, Tides Foundation was attacked on Fox News 31 times. Of those, 29 came from Beck and two from Sean Hannity. Two of Beck's tirades were the very week before Byron Williams set out after Tides."

Absolutely terrifying.
I really don't see how this country can continue as it is -- there's going to be a major change soon, whether its civil war or secession - but there's no way things can continue. The views of the opposing sides just get further and further apart. Obama's attempts at bi-partisanship, as idealistic as they are, are unrealistic. One of the things that so strongly categorizes the conservative movement is a blindness to anything that's not their way -- how can the two sides ever hope to work together if one side is completely unable and unwilling to work with the other?

I certainly hope however that if the Republicans do manage to take power, that Democrats will do everything in their power to resist- I would hope they will block every single vote, even simple procedural measures and appointments. Shut it all down.

Joe, I totally agree with you, but I think we both know that's not what will happen. The Dems are too weak. They'll give in to everything and/or let the Repubs ride roughshod like they did with Bush.
But, if Dems maintain power -- that's when the real danger is going to start. I can't imagine what they're going to do if they have to face another term of Obama as president.

I look forward to finding out Jason. I am cautiously optimistic for this cycle and the next. I have many many conservative friends and relatives who have told me point blank that what's happening in the Republican party scares them sheetless. I live in a VERY conservative area represented by a moderate democratic congressman and her opponent recently made some remarks that were beyond the pale. A conservative friend asked me to try to make a case for voting Democratic as he's never not voted before but COULD NOT imagine voting for the Republican running for Governor, Senator or Congress.
He said he went to a Republican event recently and found himself saying "WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??"

My wife's father has had a similar realization - he used to vote straight Republican, but after Bush's reign, he can't justify it any more.
The question is, are there enough people who see it that way, or are the majority of Republicans holding firm?

Very interesting article. And then there's that last sentence.
"And Obama? So far, sadly, this question answers itself."
*sigh*
