They picket funerals because it gives them attention, and that is what they crave most. If they were still only a rinkydink church in Kansas with a hate-filled website, very few people would be talking about them. The more extreme and outrageous their actions (always trying to stay within the law), the more publicity they get, and the more they spread their message. This is under a hundred people, I believe, yet they get interviewed on CNN, talked about on TV, the internet and in major newspapers, and their hate-filled message gets out there.

OK Kansas is a recurring theme around here these days. I'm fond of everyone from that great with whom I'm personally acquainted but in light of this church and the Topeka Board of Education, it would be poetic justice if Kansas moved over to the Democrat column in the upcoming general election.

Well, those few bad apples are drowning out everyone else. And if all Christians don't feel the same way, they need to start making some noise of their own, otherwise their silence implies consent.

Well, as you can see from this board (and others that I've seen on here) some of us do raise our voice and try to make it known. I kind of feel like those bad ones will always have a louder voice, but there are a lot of us out there trying. But you know...sensationalism gets more attention in the media...always. So unless you're really looking to see the other group, which...are you...you may not see that we're out there.

But trust me, these issues frustrate me just as much and from two levels. From a human rights aspect and from the Christian aspect.

Generalization in any sense is wrong. If we just group everyone together and say all Christians hate gays we're no better than the people who use god as an excuse to marginalize that which they fear.

Raising your voice doesn't do anything unless it's done in an organized fashion. I think Sojourners and those who are part of the Emergent Church are the only organizations I can think of that are part of the evangelical church that are truly speaking out as more than an individual. And even those groups don't crack down hard enough on the crazies.

Okay, enough. Does anyone really believe that the out-there beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church are held by ANYONE outside that church? Or that anyone who did tacitly hold those beliefs (other than another marginal, extremist group) would sanction Westboro's tactics? I despise WBC, but if there's anything positive (however small) to be gleaned from their foulness, it's the fact that right-wing bigots are being forced to declare, "Well, of course we would never go to those (Westboro's) lengths to persecute homosexuals"...

Sorry, but I completely disagree.

America's hatred of homosexuality never ceases to amaze me, so yes, I do think other people hold these beliefs. I mean, really, is picketing these funerals any worse than singling out gays to strip them of rights they didn't even have in the first place? We have a presidential candidate who once said that people with AIDS should be quarantined, for God's sake.

implied meaning.....but they'll still go to certain lengths to persecute Gays, and condone it by bragging that they are not as bad as Westboro. Westboro pushes the envelope so that homophobes can have a sense of being in a "comfort zone".

We will never get rid of all the people who think 'mos are gross--we can just come out and show Grandma and Uncle Joe or Rev. Dimsdale that the people they claim to hate are their friends, family and neighbors.
