Godzilla and the summer of "meh"

I've read several reviews and they are all say the same thing:
An amazing opening scene
90 minutes of boring and bad acting (with no Godzilla or the other monsters)
30 epic minutes of monster mayhem.
Aaron Taylor Johnson has gotten uniformly bad appraisals. The most common word I saw used was "bland".
This kind of movie should be like catnip to me but I just can't muster any enthusiasm.
That goes for the entire summer slate actually. Other than Guardians of the Galaxy there isn't one tent pole movie that I'm excited about.
Some of the comedies look promising (Neighbors, A Million Ways to Die in the West, 22 Jump Street), but I can't remember being this blase about a summer season.
This summer seems like a place holder for next year.
Is it just me? Is anyone else as unimpressed with this year's studio offerings?

I was just saying the same thing to a friend this weekend. All the big summer blockbusters aren't stirring much excitement in me, although I'll still wind up going to most of them.
I'm most looking forward to The Fault In Our Stars; loved the book and the trailer makes me tear up every time I see it, ha.

Posted: 5/12/14 at 4:39pmThis happens. We all cross a line. Reboots and franchises just start to look like bad TV shows. Eventually you start praying Judi Dench has SOMETHING coming out.

That's sad. I was looking forward to Godzilla...hadn't heard the advance negative buzz.
The movie I'm really looking forward to is Snowpiercer. It's the English language debut from director Bong Joon-ho (The Host). The trailer looks awesome...and it stars Tilda Swinton!
I think it's set for a June release.

"Do we know when Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2 is coming out?"
According to IMDB, it's March 2015.

Have you been following all the drama with Snowpiercer Erik?
Joon-ho and Weinstien have come to blows a few times. No one sure which version we're getting in theaters.

I have been! Last I heard they had reached an agreement. Joon-ho gets to keep is two and half hour cut but the film will have a limited release here in the States.

Soooo glad about this. I've read that the difference is significant.
If they had released the shortened version I was going to wait for the BD with the original cut.

I feel like I have read different critics than you, Taz. Like, I know critics who have low tolerance for BS big budget summer movie tentpoles who love this. I am just hoping where this film does not become Pacific Rim for me where I knew it had champions because Kaiju and Monsters vs. Robots but it felt like Guillermo Del Toro's soul was sucked out of it. Haven't seen Gareth Edwards' first film but I dig the cast, minus Aaron Taylor-Johnson who sounds Chicago gangster in clips.
Guardians of the Galaxy and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hold my attention as well.

I never said the reviews panned it. I just said that based on how they described the film it made me lost interest.
(ATJ has been getting some harsh comments though).
I don't know, there are few things I love more than a good monster movie, but this one just doesn't excite me.

I read basic non-spoiler synopsis, too. It sounds like it does everything the original did in terms of set-up. I also heard good notices for Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston.

I actually saw X-Men this past Saturday and it was amazing.. and it's getting great reviews.
'Zilla is also getting great reviews... So this thread confuses me.

so I saw Godzilla... one of those rare movies where I didn't mind the 3D... I still wouldn't pay for 3D... either way it worked well for this movie
I enjoyed it... very much... it did start off slow and you just have to be patient until Godzilla arrives... and when he does... it's awesome!
Bryan Cranston was awesome... and Aaron Johnson was pretty decent.. nothing to shout home about... fairly bland character as written.. not sure how much he could have done but he was ok...
