Vegan plus a little fish!

Vegan plus a little fish!

Good stuff. NOTHING tastes exactly like cheese, but I love the slices. And they've really improved the melting quality.

I didn't realize that picture would show up this big, but I'm too lazy to edit in photobucket..

"Would you like to see all those industries go out of business? I'm not being sarcastic, I'd like to know if that's what your wish is, so I hope someone answers.

What should I eat, then? I'm allergic to most raw fruits and vegetables. Certain seeds can kill me. I guess beans would be my entire diet, no? "

I'd love to see all industries that practice atrocious slaughtering go out of business; or at least reform their method. And my personal philosophy has always been that I eat whatever I feel comfortable killing myself. Now if I lived like people did 100 years ago, when meat substitutions were not available and you had to eat to live - then I would eat meat. But I refuse to take part in the monstrosities taking place at these meat farms.

Aren't those the ones with Casein? If so, they do technically contain an animal product. You can read the ingredients on their website: http://www.galaxyfoods.com/ourbrands/usa/veggie.asp

These are the ones that are totally vegan. I've tried some, and they were all right. I've been eating the Tofutti cheese for so long that even though it probably tastes nothing like actual cheese, I'm just used to it. http://www.galaxyfoods.com/ourbrands/usa/vegan.asp

Wow, they do! A lot of the soy yogurts do too, so I shouldn't really be surprised, but still... yikes! I mean, I eat dairy, but they shouldn't false advertise that way.

It's the casein that a lot of people can't handle. Many kids I work with are on gluten and casein free diets.

Yeah, there's unfortunately a lot of stuff that contains casein but still bills itself as "dairy free." A lot of the "non dairy" coffee creamers, for example. Which works for people who eliminate dairy for dieting reasons, but can be extremely dangerous for people with allergies. They're "dairy free" on a certain level because they don't actually contain milk, but casein is, literally, milk protein. It's the protein in milk that most people with dairy allergies, myself included, are allergic to, and it can be deadly. A few years ago, the labels weren't required to list it as anything more than "casein," and it was a problem because unfortunately a lot of people don't know what it is, or that it's more or less another name for milk. The new labeling laws, I believe, require it now to be denoted as "milk derived" or "milk protein" or something along those lines.

Yeah, that's the the rennet in cheese. Vegetarians who aren't vegan assume that all cheese is vegetarian, when a lot of it is still produced by milling deep-frozen calf stomachs.

Grilled cheese, anyone? Vegan plus a little fish!

It seems that they've improved labeling over the past few years. And in restaurants now, I see more disclaimers listing food allergens. We still have a long way to go, but it seem like people are finally trying to make more of an effort.

I didn't read the entire thread, but I did see that Oreos are now vegan because they no longer contain cream. That's great, but my roommate in college was vegetarian and she never ate Oreos because they contain glycerin. Did they change that, too?

Have they ever said anything about the source of the glycerin, anyway? Glycerin can be from synthetic or vegetable sources as well as animal-based sources.

Alright--so I'm now vegan-ish. I say I'm vegan when it's convenient, which is a total cop-out, but it's better than eating lots of cheese or other products from animals! I've been noticing that I've been losing weight, even though I'm not really watching what I eat as much as I was a few months ago.

Question--what is a good vegan salad dressing with a spinach salad? I used to get fat free ranch, but that's no longer an option, sadly.

I've followed a vegetarian plus fish diet for quite a few years, but have found that I can't really eat fish anymore either. It wasn't a conscious decision, I've just developed a revulsion toward it.

I also just discovered Tofurkey deli slices. OMG. I am instantly a fan. Didn't care for the stuffing/cranberry slices, but oven roasted is incredible. I just had three slices (they are very thin), on whole wheat, with tomato, lettuce, red onion, and mayo...and it was pretty terrific!

I totally agree about those Tofurkey slices, iflit. Not a big fan of the smoked, but those oven roasted style slices are soooooooooo good.
