It's going to be the same kind of unstoppable juggernaut that Titanic was. It's best to just accept it now.

And much like Titanic, it has been a very very weak year for films.

Bravo to all the artists and creative talent behind Glee. Long may it reign as the shining star of television and remind us all of the purity of spirit of the youthful urge to perform--that feeling we get get when we first hear ourselves singing, we first feel ourselves dancing, we first feel glee within us and express that glee to others.

Gwynneth does, too. I remember at the '05 Oscars she presented the Foreign Language Film category and she prefaced it with, "i was going to present each movie in their native language... but I won't." (Obligatory laughter from the audience.) I guess that's her attempt at humor but she came off sounding elitist. I half-expected her to add after the laughter died down, "But you know I totally could if I wanted to."

Spidey, I just read what you said about why Avatar won. Really, all you have to do is replace that title with Titanic and it still makes sense.
Will this become a regular thing? Every ten years or so James Cameron will come back with a movie he spent years making? It's like the dedication alone will get him the awards.

Yikes. Golden globes, indeed.

AVATAR is an awe-inspiring vision and major accomplishment. A film that revolutionizes the art of filmmaking and changes the way we both make and watch movies. It's more than a movie, it's a cultural and global phenomenon and it deserves every award that's bestowed upon it. Like THE WIZARD OF OZ, STAR WARS, E.T., and yes… even TITANIC, it’s the one that will be remembered, talked about, studied, imitated and watched over and over again long into the future. And in aside, I thought it was very classy of Cameron to give a nod to his ex, Kathryn Bigelow, during his acceptance speech for Best Director by saying that he had expected her to win, and deservedly so. And it wouldn’t surprise me at all if THE HURT LOCKER went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

... except The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, E.T., and Titanic ALL had far better stories to go with their incredible production values. Avatar does not.
Still, it's a frontrunner for Best Picture now ... but I would put it in the "big and dumb" category where the Academy votes for "most" movie instead of "best" movie, including such lumbering achievements as Around the World in 80 Days and The Greatest Show On Earth.
Avatar will NOT age well. When the special effects start to look "quaint," as they are bound to do, given time, you'll be left with its lame story. If it wins, it will be remembered as one of the weakest Best Picture Oscars awarded.
It won't be the first time that's happened ... or the last.

Star Wars...really? That story was certainly no more original thatn Avatar's. And the dialouge in Star War's is just as bad if not worse than Avatar.

I didn't say "original," I said BETTER. And yes, Star Wars (the first movie) has a much better story than Avatar. By "lightyears."
Better written, better character development, more emotionally compelling, and solid in its structure AND dialog.
There's no comparison.

Star Wars the latter trilogy was an utter mess in dialogue and vision, which is what happens when Lucas has complete control over everything. He only directed the A New Hope in the first trilogy.
I also need to say just because the special effects won't age well does not take away from the film's production values. I take the original King Kong any day over Peter Jackson's ego-trip of a remake despite the dated effects, which at the time were as groundbreaking as Avatar is now.
I won't say the movie is big and dumb necessarily. This film has been doubted before it even went into production, it always had a target on its back so I cannot say this backlash was unexpected.
All of that being said I remember reading how some films like Coppola's Apocalypse Now! never had a shot at any awards because it took so long to complete and was costly despite the praise of it being a crowning achievement of a film. Cameron, however, gets rewarded.

Eh..I disagree but know I'm in the minority. I rewatched the original Star Wars recently and wondered how I used to like it so much but then I forgave myself for being five years old.

One tends to like the science fiction and fantasy of one's childhood.
Avatar will be beloved by the young people who are experiencing it today the way Star Wars and, yes, even the holy Wizard of Oz were to previous generations.

I wasn't a kid when I first saw Star Wars, Close Encounters, E.T., or Lord of the Rings.
But in my opinion, they are much better movies than Avatar.
EDIT: Adding in another recent "non childhood" movie ... The Matrix (first movie) is far superior as a sci-fi fantasy genre film. And James Cameron thought enough of it to "borrow" quite a bit for Avatar.

I fail to see how Avatar and The Matrix are alike, and I like both films. Also, The Matrix is hardly original storytelling.

I had a feeling Avatar would win, though I agree it is similar to the Titanic win, which was mostly for its technological achievement and massive popularity (though I thought the story for Titanic was far worse than Avatar). Personally, I do think Star Wars was a far superior film in story and screenplay. I loved the visual aspect of Avatar, but I never felt the expansive depth of story that I felt with Star Wars, which from the very first film, dropped its audience into the middle of what was an epic story in the history and politics of the universe they had created. With Avatar, it pretty much felt like Jackson's world was pretty much confined to the purpose of telling this one tale. Maybe there will be more to it, but I didn't leave with the anticipation of a sequel or prequel to gain any new insight into the world or characters, much less continuing the story in any way.
