Stop the fighting.
Everyone relax.
Personally, I think people should dress to only impress themselves.
I love that Barrett wears pink polka dots with pinstripes. It looks great on him. I could not pull it off but he looked adorable.
Bruce Villanch wears funny tee shirts and that looks good on him.
Musto looks great in salmon and I could never carry it.
I look good in red and black. People always say to me why do you only wear red and black and I say because thats what looks good on me.
Wear what you like.
Don't conform.
I cut my hair short for my tv show and I hated it. I am much happier with long hair and I don't give a damn what people think.

Marquise- I know I shouldn't care, but when my personal character is attacked, especially by someone who has no basis to do so whatsoever, I get a bit heated and have a hard time letting go. But I will let go now because Namo can have all the preconceived ideas about me as he wants, but he has no idea who I am or what kind of person I am.

"but he has no idea who I am..."

Actually, yes I do. I have seen a good sampling of your posts for well over six months, so at the very least I DO have an idea of who you are.

But this whole thing is not about you specifically. The thread was about whether or not people who dress according to a herd mentality are hot or not.

And the answer is not.

Oh, and Marquise, every time you write your ransom note-looking version of the f-word I think, "God, what an @$$h0!e."

Ah, now that is a question many have pondered...

re: Guys who dress Preppy Thank you, FOAnatic.

Namo- You can't know too much about me based on my lame little posts, no matter how long you've been reading. You don't know anything of any substance about me. It still dumbfounds me how you think you can know a person so well from reading posts on a message board. I've been reading your posts, yet I am willing to admit that I don't know who the hell you are and I know nothing about you.

Maybe you don't understand what I mean by knowing a person. Take a good friend of yours, for example. A really good friend. You probably know their opinions on things that matter, such as their beliefs and their priorities and their dreams and aspirations and their hopes and their fears. That is knowing a person. You don't know me.

Listen, girlfriend, I didn't say I knew you. I carefully used the language YOU used for a reason. From reading your posts and particularly in this thread, I have an idea of who you are. And if you don't think lame little posts give others an idea of who you are, well, you're wrong. If you don't think watching you get all defensive about your incredibly unique sense of preppy style conveys an idea of who you are, well, wrong once again.

And Foanatic, maybe you should organize and army of look-alikes to come slap me with their flip flops. Or would they all be too busy telling each other how "hot" they all are?

This is getting too funny.

Okay, everyone! Listen up! We are ALL wrong. We are all clearly below Namo. So let's stop conforming and let's conform to Namo's idea of how we should be, okay? Great!

God forbid we have opinions.

I'm very amused by Namo's classification an entire group of people. I guess he's met each person in the world that owns clothes from these stores, so he has a legitimate idea of who they all are. Listen up once again, kids: If you wear Abercrombie & Fitch, you automatically are worthless and deserve no respect. WHERE IS YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY?!

Why is this reminding me of all of those "punk" kids in high school that hated the A&F crew because of their lack of individuality, yet they were just as unoriginal? They all wore the same Chucks and had the same pins on their clothes/bags and had writing on their clothes, etc.

My life has been a waste! All those years of doing charity work and giving money: DOWN THE DRAIN!! All those years of doing theatre and thinking that I was being creative and artistic: TO NO AVAIL!! And all because I wore Abercrombie & Fitch...

How could I have continued to live on in this unfathomable manner??

Gee, guess I hit a nerve with Josh and FOA. I'm sorry to point out that you sound like typical consumers.

There's a great article in yesterday's Times about class and status symbols in the US, and it's still viewable for free today. Two paragraphs stand out, the first, because it makes me think of this thread, the second, because it shows what unthinking buttheads people are:

"Marketers also know that today's shoppers have unpredictable priorities. Robert Gross, who was wandering the Beachwood mall with his son David, said he couldn't live without his annual cruise. Mr. Gross, 65, also prizes his two diamond pinkie rings, his racks of cashmere sweaters and his Mercedes CLK 430. 'My license plate reads BENZ4BOB,' he said. "Does that tell you what kind of person I am?'"

Um, yeah, Bob, it does. It tells me exactly the kind of person you are. But, Joshua would point out, oh no, nope not at all, you can't know ANYBODY, even your good friends!

And this one:

"People want to participate in our brand because we are an affordable luxury," said Gene Dunkin, president of Godiva [Chocolates] North America, a unit of the Campbell Soup Company. "For under $1 to $350, with an incredible luxury package, we give the perception of a very expensive product."

I mean, come ON! "People want to participate in our brand?"

"The perception of a very expensive product."

This nails EXACTLY what I was criticizing about this thread.

"Preppy" is a brand. A brand that comes with all sorts of "perceptions" about what it means to those who buy into it, but most importantly to those who DESIRE the people who possess the brand.

It's sad really. But Josh and FOA, you're living in America, at the dawn of the millennium. And boys, are you ever what you own.

question- is it really just america and our current culture, or have these things been true for a long time, and in other countries? i think it's human instinct to make judgements about a person based on their appearence. maybe we *shouldn't* but we do. and people want other people to have a good impression of them, so they... wear this brand or that brand, fit this or that stereotype so you can say "this person is [enter group here]" and never have to look past that. for example, if you see someone dressed in what we call preppy, you would make certain assumptions about that person- mainly, their income. now why do we care if other people think we're wealthy or cool? why do we care what their perception of us is?
i don't think namo is attacking josh, i think he's bringing up some valid points but using josh as an example. here we have a young person who is symbolic of many other young people in this nation. he's smart, good looking, and puts thought into what he wears. but isn't it possible that the clothes he feels attracted to he's been encouraged to feel attracted to, via subtle media messages?
many questions, and no right (or easy) answer.

No right answer? Tell that to NAMO...he's pretty steadfast in his feeling that he is right.

But, sadly, that couldn't be farther from the truth. No matter how many "insulting" plays on words he makes with musical theatre lyrics. This was meant to be a harmless thread and not to cause a fight. If Namo were offended by this thread he/she could have simply typed one word: NOT. But he/she is one of those people who openly acts "different" because they feel they are above people who dress in Old Navy/Gap/AE/etc. A person who has the "my sh*t don't stink attitude." Well, Namo, darling...you may think you are superior to mainstream culture...but you are no more original than any other beatnick, for lack of a better word.

LOL... Wow.

I finally thought this thread was dead, but I guess not. So since it's alive and well, I shall reply:

I still don't understand how my choice of clothing defines me as a person 100%. I'm baffled. I can understand how my clothing would say a little bit about me, but there is so much more to a person that can't be immediately recognized by looking at their style of dress.

Namo can point out whatever he feels is necessary about me. I know myself. I know myself much more than Namo does... shocking, isn't it? I know what I treasure, what is important to me, what I love, what matters to me, and what kind of person I am. I know that I am not an unthinking butthead. I still don't understand why it matters so damn much if I like a certain brand, regardless of the reason that I like it.

Let's pretend for a moment that I am one of these "unthinking, mindless drones" that buy expensive clothes because people/media/etc. tell me to. That does not mean that I can't be unique or creative in another way. For all you know, I could be a f*cking scientist working on a cure for AIDS.

Yes, I like Izod. So?
Yes, I like Abercrombie & Fitch. So?
Yes, I like Gap. So?
Yes, I like expensive things. So? It's my money and I can spend it freely. Isn't that part of the beauty of America?

To say that I am, basically, a detriment to society is wrong. I am an intelligent, thinking, hard-working, creative person. You may think that I look like "everybody else," but I am a unique person, despite how much you don't want to believe that. I do make a conscious effort to contribute to the creativity and culture of our country. You do not know what I do and have done.

Do not think that you know what kind of person I am.
Do not tell me that I am a disappointment to society.
Do not judge me.

I have to get in on this as it's possibly the funniest thing I've read in a long time!

Right on Joshua and FOA!

Here's my contribution:
Okay... how about "goths" for example...

They all claim to be "anti-conformist" yet don't most of them dress in black and look IDENTICAL? Not a stereotype but merely an observation from my high school. They look exactly the same yet make fun of the "preps" for being conformist! DUH!!

I dress "preppy" but wear what I feel comfortable in. I wore a tie as a belt the other day for example... people made comments... but what the hell do I care?

Can't wait to hear Namo's response! lol

PS Godiva is the worst chocolate. They can't make a decent piece of white chocolate. Chocolate gourmands enjoy Kron, Leonides,
and Lindt.
Lindt does not have the "brand" or fake ambience of Godiva but the white chocolate is in another universe.
Godiva sucks!

findingnamo- you know what can be even more annoying then people who are "conformists" are people who TRY to be different. Trying too hard to be different in order to "really show who you are" is in my opinion alot stupider than conforming to society. Did you ever think that maybe trying too hard to stick out and be different is more of a problem? If you know who you are it doesn't matter how you dress...even if it is "conforming" with society. But if you have to think up a "style" or what not that's TOTALLY different from everyone else thats just stupid. It should just be that you wear what you like...people shouldn't even classify themselves as having a certain "style". Everyone should jsut have their own and not think of how they have to live up to the standards of being "preppy" or "punk" or whatever.

As for me personally, I don't think I could classify how I dress. I think it could be considered "preppy". But I shop everywhere from American Eagle to Old Navy to even Target...
I don't think it's neccessary to classify something that really in my opinion has NO meaning.

Clothes don't make a person.

"If Namo were offended by this thread he/she could have simply typed one word: NOT."

And of what value would that be? Do people NOT want discussions on the matter? Why start a thread? Or do some only want to hear what reinforces their own beliefs? How much value is there in a Hot or Not thread?

Discussion is frowned upon around here. Because if people discuss things, it COULD lead to a disagreement. Disagreements happen because people think they are "right." God forbid that somebody should think they are right; that they should argue strongly about their point of view. Because to have a strong point of view, and to present it without a thousand qualifiers and statements that "it's just my opinion" and cop-out conclusions like, "I could be wrong" is to in some way demonstrate superiority, right? That must mean they think they are inherently better than somebody else, right? And it has in some major way, implications for what they think their fecal matter smells like.

Right?
