Guys who dress Preppy

Wow... I just realized that I am wearing a polo shirt, cargo shorts and flip-flops. And I wasn't even trying to dress preppy today; I just threw these clothes on to sit around the house in.

Oh my god! HOW AWESOME! Preppy without even trying. That makes you SUCH an individual. Oh my god, I wish I could copy what you have on! What color polo shirt? Where's it from? What color cargo shorts? How long are they, exactly? I don't want to stick out by being any different.

If you think I'm a conformist, that's fine. I know myself and I know that I'm not a conformist; I just really like this certain style of clothing.

If you really want, you can classify anyone as a conformist... even those who you wouldn't normally think of as one.

Also, why does it bother you so much? I always wonder why some people despise Abercrombie, etc.-wearing people so much. It's their own personal decision and it doesn't affect you. Why do you care at all?

"Also, why does it bother you so much? I always wonder why some people despise Abercrombie, etc.-wearing people so much. It's their own personal decision and it doesn't affect you. Why do you care at all?"

:::
lemming noun.
Any of various small, thickset rodents, especially of the genus Lemmus, inhabiting northern regions and known for periodic mass migrations that sometimes end in drowning.
:::

Because, Joshua, the utter lack of creativity that is shown by people who desire to look just like everybody else so they can fit in is just another disappointing, stultifying aspect of American culture. And, actually, that does affect me. Seeing people joining in without so much as a whisp of critical thinking is basically the nucleus of everything that's wrong with our culture.

the way you dress doesn't dictate whether you're a conformist or not. i can be wearing the same shirt as someone else and have a completely different personality, outlook on life, and set of moral values - and my wearing the same shirt doesn't make me want to be exactly like them.

it makes me say "nice shirt."

Maybe Joshua doesn't dress like that to fit in - maybe he just really likes the stlye and feels comfortable in that clothing. Although there are several people like you describe, FindingNamo, who annoy me thoroughly.

Oh, I see. So because I'm not forcing myself to dress in a way that I don't like, it makes me a conformist, which makes me bad. That's fine. I'd rather be a "conformist" than be unhappy with my appearance.

Maybe Joshua doesn't dress like that to fit in - maybe he just really likes the stlye and feels comfortable in that clothing.

Thank you for understanding. I don't do anything just to fit in.

So, we "conformists" affect you, Namo? How so? Do we hinder your ability to work or live?? I'd love to know. And I'm intrigued to know how exactly you allow us to have this unintended power over you.

Oh Joshua, I am willing to take you at your word that you "just really like" that certain style of clothing. With a huge grain of salt.

I'm sure you were in no way influenced by the marketing of that style, by the people in your life who also dress in that style, or by the countless influences in American culture that pressure people to conform.

I'm sure that you suddenly arrived one day at the individual decision that you "like" a certain style and later found out that, wow, it's called The Preppy Look. Who knew?

Let me spell it out for you again, the stultifying sameness of American culture today, of which "the preppy look" is particularly emblematic, affects me on a daily basis.

You can drive from one end of the country to the other and see the exact same Gaps and Abercrombies marketing the exact same style to people who have learned the lesson that to fit in is to be cool. DON'T be an individual. DON'T think for yourself. And PICK one of the four or five acceptable pre-packaged styles because what you wear really says EVERYTHING about who you are.

It's true, it does. Just not in the positive way you think it does.

People who buy into that crap, the way you have, do absolutely nothing to advance creativity in our culture.

Oy.

OF COURSE I was influenced by the marketing... That's how I got to see the clothes in the first place. I saw the clothes and I said, "Ooh, those are nice. I like those," and I bought them. Not to be something I'm not, not to fit in with a certain crowd, but because I genuinely like them. You go ahead and take your grain of salt; you don't know me.

And the way I dress does not say everything about me. Don't attempt to judge me or act like you know me when you know nothing about me, except for the fact that I like to shop at Abercrombie & Fitch once in a while.

Plus, if you bothered to reread my original post, I clearly said that A&F is not the only place I shop and that I don't always dress in the "preppy" look, although I do like to sometimes.

You may think it's wrong for people to "conform", but it's also just as wrong for you to judge and stereotype people when you don't know nearly enough about them to do so.

I don't mind guys in preppy Lacoste knit shirts as long as once can see their nipples. Otherwise, what's the point?

One of the things I love about Sarah Jessica Parker is that both in life, and in her character on a certain well known series, you can never quite pinpoint that what she is wearing came from a specific store or designer. OK, maybe her shoes, but everything else is fresh, creative, and in tune with what fits HER body. Love that about her. I *think* Namo is merely saying that going to the GAP and buying everything a certain manequin is wearing doesn't show a lot of originality.

And I can understand that. But I don't do that and that is what is frustrating. Namo thinks because I buy a few items from some of these stores that he has a personal vendetta against, it makes me unoriginal and, apparently, not worth existing as a human being.

Oh, honestly. I picked those stores as EXAMPLES. My criticism is about the fact that I think if you can describe your "look" with an already identified market niche, well, you're part of the problem in this culture.

Joshua wrote, 'You may think it's wrong for people to "conform", but it's also just as wrong for you to judge and stereotype people when you don't know nearly enough about them to do so.'

Ah yes, here we go yet again with the specious reasoning that passes for discussion around here.

Let me diagram it for you:

"Yes I dress just like everybody else. But I am not just like everybody else. I may dress just like them and fit right in with them, but I AM DIFFERENT. In fact, how dare you say it's conformity? Why, that's wrong! It's just as wrong for you to say that as conformity is."

See? The discussion was about conformity, Joshua, not about judgment and stereotyping. But if the stereotype fits, wear it with your Izod. And if having an opinion against the utter homogenization of American culture as perfectly demonstrated by an army of preppy clones all dressed alike is a judgment, well, let me be guilty.

Okay, here is the thing:

I don't dress like everyone else. I have a few items from those stores. You don't seem to understand. A few jeans from A&F, a couple shirts from Gap, get the idea? You've never seen the way I dress. I don't know how else to explain this to you.

People who buy into that crap, the way you have, do absolutely nothing to advance creativity in our culture.

Hmm, that sounds like judging. You're telling me that I am not "advancing creativity in our culture", yet you don't know a damn thing of any importance about me.

Just out of curiosity, how do you advance culture in our society? What breakthroughs have you made? These are genuine questions of mine.

Stop the fighting.
Everyone relax.
Personally, I think people should dress to only impress themselves.
I love that Barrett wears pink polka dots with pinstripes. It looks great on him. I could not pull it off but he looked adorable.
Bruce Villanch wears funny tee shirts and that looks good on him.
Musto looks great in salmon and I could never carry it.
I look good in red and black. People always say to me why do you only wear red and black and I say because thats what looks good on me.
Wear what you like.
Don't conform.
I cut my hair short for my tv show and I hated it. I am much happier with long hair and I don't give a damn what people think.
