There are Christmas threads and Santa threads.
So, here is a Hanukkah thread!
What do you want from Hanukkah Harry?
Have you sat on his lap at the mall yet? He sits right across from Santa but there is a wall in between them

...he sounds cool.
My Jewish friend and I were going to go to a Santa in the mall and ask him if he's interested in scientology this year.

My family and I don't do Chanukah presents. It's just not that important a holiday. But we do light candles, sing songs, and eat an obscene number of latkes, because latkes are awesome.
I can't wait.
Ever since I moved across the country on my own a few years ago, Hannukah has so much more meaning because it is the first time I get to see my family back home and spend a holiday together. I am writhing with anticipation, waiting to see my nephews (one of whom I helped raise for the first two years of his life).
I hope everyone has a great holiday...although it's a little far off to be thinking about it right now.

Jeez, doesn't it seem like just yesterday we were doing the Shana Tovah thread? This year has FLOWN by...
I have these memories of all my non-Jewish friends being so jealous that I got presents 8 nights in a row. I didn't have the heart to tell them that that wasn't the case, at least not in my house...
We usually just do one big present, and then maybe some smaller things depending on the year.
And I cannot WAIT for latkes! And gelt!

Did you ever have those chocalate Hanukkah gelt things? I was so obsessed with them when I was little. I thought they were the coolest things ever! Now I like 'real chocolate.' hehe
We don't do the 8 day present thing either. We usually just do one big present and maybe some small ones from family friends and aunts/uncles....
Usually I just get money.

Um...I'm still obsessed with gelt. Especially now that it comes in dark chocolate. Really, it's traditional and it's dark chocolate? How can I not be interested?
OY OY OY, everyone! (Jewish answer to HO! HO! HO!...am I the only one that thought it was wrong for Santa to be saying that?)
Last year my birthday fell on the 8th night... I LOVE when that happens. No 8 gifts here either. Extended family on my sister in laws side is pretty large so we usually just blindly pick names at thanksgiving for who we will get a gift for and spend the rest of the days until Hanukkah guessing who has you.

I use the Holiday Armadillo as my Hanukkah figure. I haven't done 8 nights of presents since I was like, 7. It's better this way.
Oh, I haven't had gelt in FOREVER. *misses it*
i dont want to start a new a new thread, but seeing as we are on a Hanukkah topic an going debate family as to sour cream or apple sauce....
personally im an apple sauce person
as for hanukkah harry, he doesnt visit my brother and i, but we get chocolate dreidels, or i did when i was little

Sour cream. Always sour cream. And Chanukah Harry is, like the Chanukah Bush, a sad little imitation of Christmas that expresses its underlying feelings of inadequacy in its name.
I like Patak's chutney on them.
LOL.
I also love Heinz Ketchup.

mmm. Latkes.
My wife is a non-practicing Jew, and I'm a non-practicing Catholic, so we usually do a little of both holidays. Since they are both on the same day this year, it makes everything very easy.
My family usually does the 8 nights of presents thing (except for those times when Hanukkah falls in late December and we're away on vacation, like this year), even if sometimes that means there's only one or two presents to open each night. I remember that one year I insisted on opening all of my presents on the first night and then felt miserable the rest of the week watching my brother open new presents each night.
When I was little, my parents used to tell me that my grandpa (who worked for a toy distributor) was Santa Claus's Jewish assistant, so that's what we had instead of Hanukkah Harry.
Dark chocolate gelt has to be the best thing ever.
