He wouldn't have but as soon as word got out that Dumbledore picked him up it would have been bedlam!
I think he did not go BECAUSE he thought he was special. He had made the decision he talks about at the end of 5- be hands off, don't push him, etc.
You are probably right about the history Caitie, maybe it was just intuition on the part of Dumbledore.
I can accept that...but do you think his decision not to go because Harry was special could have been a conscious choice as a result of how things turned out with Tom?
You mean like he somehow blames himself?
I don't think that, but I do think he has learned and changed his thoughts on many things. I don't see it as a direct corelation. I think Dumbledore does not think he created Voldemort, only that he wishes he could have kept him from going down that path.
Another thought I just had on this is Dumbledore DOES seem to know a lot.
He is one of the few that does not believe Voldemort really is gone, he seems to understand more about what happened that fateful night, and maybe he already knows that Harry has the potential to be one of the most powerful wizards ever. But he does not know if Harry will be more like his parents or Lord Voldemort.
Maybe he wanted someone else to ge Harry so he could find out what kind of person he is from someone else. Something that seems very important in all the books is the character of a person and Dumbledore did not want to meet him and find him to be like Tom Riddle. Dumbledore sees the parrallels in their lives (just the basics at this point) and may be interested in seeing how it works out, but wants to stand back at first.
That's an interesting theory, but I am not sure he'd send Hagrid if his goal is to feel someone out. Hagrid isn't the best decision maker in the Harry Potter universe.
That is very true but Dumbledore does trust Hagrid a lot, he wouldn't have just sent anyone.
Oh coursethe answer could just be he was too busy
He trusts Hagrid to do things like pick up and protect the Philosopher's Stone, pick up and protect Harry, protect this...pick up that... those are things that a simple minded half giant are good for.
Figuring out someone's character and propensity to turn evil, not so much.
Can you tell I don't like Hagrid?
No not at all! I think he could trust HAgrid on the basics. Like "He is a bratty kid" or "He is a good kid" ect. The very basic things!
I haven't formed an opinion on this yet. (So I'm not just neglecting you, Stephen!) My hunch, though, is that there was an ulterior motive in not going to Little Whinging on his own. (Especially if he really was in contact with Petunia all this time - you'd think he'd have MORE reason to meet the Dursleys in person!)
I can't wait until we do the next chapter - I just finished reading it and I'm reminded of how much I like Hermione! Stupid boys.
I found my book!
And I will NOT tell you where because everyone will make fun of me to no end. And I am excited about Chapter 14 also (just finished it!)
Under the toilet?
On your nightstand where you always keep it?
ok since I ma guessing you will keep guessing forever i will admit it.
It turned up being IN my bookcase...where it is supposed to be. I was actually looking for something else, saw it and hit myself, literally
*snorts* Yeah, that IS pretty dumb.
Just keep talking amongst yourselves. I'll get the new chapter up sometime today. Sitting through the Wedding Singer took a lot more energy than I thought it would.
Yes it is. Why I literally smacked myself when I found it
And no rush at all!
*twiddles thumbs* Did two days worth of posts get deleted while I was gone?

Patronous, I'm sorry that I didn't answer on Thursday like I'd planned. I left town Thursday morning and thought I'd get on that evening to post my answer, but ended up being too busy. I just got back tonight, and wondered the same thing as Tiff!
Anyway, my answer (which is still just several thoughts):
I wonder if part of why Dumbledore went to pick up Riddle was because a little bit of manipulation would potentially have to be done with the muggles Riddle was living with. Because the Dursleys already knew about magic (even though they denied the existance of it), they would know what Hogwarts was, who Dumbledore was, and it would be OK.
I also wonder if Dumbledore had actually sent a letter to Petunia before sending the letter(s) to Harry. Or maybe in the middle of all of that. It seems like he would have tried reminding her of her sister and brother-in-law and their magical abilities.
Plus, Hagrid probably volunteered to pick up Harry, and any trouble that Dumbledore anticipated was probably trouble with the Dursleys allowing Harry to go which, obviously, Hagrid was able to handle.
*Insert excuse about being busy*
The new chapter will be posted tomorrow morning I promise. This time it's actually written and ready to go.

As I keep saying... Don't worry about it!!
Hey take your time! You have things to do and I doubt any of us mind
I'm just giving Sara a hard time (without being demoted from teacher's pet).
Chapter 14 Felix Felicis
Ron and Hermione argue about the Slug Club, while Harry muses on the possibility of his two best friends dating. Ron’s nerves escalate as the Quidditch match against Slytherin nears, causing problems at practice. After walking in on Ginny and Dean kissing Ron argues with her and Harry is left worrying about his feelings of jealousy. At breakfast the morning of the Quidditch match Hermione accuses Harry of putting something in Ron’s drink. The match goes very well and Gryffindor wins. After the match Hermione confronts Harry and Ron accusing Harry of giving Ron
his Felix Felicis to influence the outcome of the match. Harry reveals that he faked it to give Ron a boost of confidence. Ron and Hermione argue again about her lack of confidence in him. Back in the common room, Hermione is upset to see Ron kissing Lavender and storms out. Harry goes to talk to her, but they are interrupted by Ron and Lavender. Hermione sets a flock of birds she conjured on Ron and runs out.
*Discussion Questions*
What are the moral implications of the actions of each of the trio, Harry fooling Ron, Hermione not threatening to turn them in until after the match, and Ron "using" the Felix Felicis?
Hermione’s actions at the end of the chapter, causing the birds to attack Ron, have been very controversial. What do you think?

I will get back to this one after work...I can't decide.

You go girl! I mean yes, it probably wasn't the right thing to do but Ron is being a jerk. He KNOWS HErmione likes him and he likes her too, he is just being a jerk because she said she thought that Ron couldn't be amazing at Quidditch on his own. I think she just did what any intelligent female would do if they could in that situation
