Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire

Posted: 11/14/05 at 12:21ami got to see a special showing of harry potter today.. and i just have to say... WOW! i wish they would keep this director for the next movie.. because the movie is brilliant. it is definitly the best one (it is also the best book) they obviously had to cut some things from the book.. but they definitly kept true to the book. they did have to make some of the biggest characters in them.. very small roles. this movie is definitly rated pg-13... some sexual things... but then again they are growing up. the visual affects were wonderful! the actors are getting better and better.i laughed, i screamed, i cried... wow what a movie! definitly one to see!

(possible spoilers if you haven't read the book)
- Is Hermione's entrance at the Yule Ball with Viktor more anti-climatic than the book? I found her surprise entrance and Harry & Ron's shock to be a highlight in the novel, but judging from the trailers, it seems really underdone.
- Does the film begin at the Burrow or at the Quiddich Cup? Are the Dursleys really completely axed from this one?
- How great is Jason Isaacs?? Does he get a fair amount of screen time?
- Miranda Richardson and Brendan Gleeson - Yay or nay? (From looks alone, I've choosen nay for now.)
I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed that they axed Hermione's SPEW subplot. I thought it gave younger readers a more relevant issue to consider (and was fodder for a mature parent-child discussion) instead of just being another wizard book.

not surprised that is it good. It;s directed by the director of Four Weddings and a Funeral which is one of the best British comedies ever.
unfortunately, the next movie is being directed by David Yates. I looked at what he has down and I don;t recognize anything that he has done. And a new screenplay writer. J.K Rowling always worked with Steve (something), now she is going to work with Michael (something). wonder if he is going to be any good.
can;t wait to see the new film!

As long as Steve Kloves is still leaving after GoF, they can get whoever they want to direct.
I really, really want to like this movie. All the buzz is good, but I was so disappointed by the last movie. But I *really* want to like this movie...

I'm excited, but can I just air one complaint and get it out of my system? Here goes:
THE HAIR IS BAD!!! What were they thinking? Harry and Ron's hair.... not "cool," just very in need of trimming. I can see what they were going for with Rupert's hair at least, but Daniel's just too long and looks borderline mullet-ish.

I've seen the movie also, and it is by far the best Potter movie! Daniel Radcliffe has greatly improved his acting and the scene where Cedric dies is so sad, Dan just has this anguished look on his face that makes you feel his pain.
Since charliebrownkid hasn't responded I thought I would answer some of the questions that were asked.
1. Hermione's entrance is pretty vague. Emma Watson is already very pretty, so seeing her in her dress is not a surprise. Harry is too preoccupied looking at Cho to really notice, but he is surprised at how pretty she does look. When a beaming Hermione enters the ball with Viktor, Padma Patil asks Ron if the "mystery girl" is Hermione and Ron says "No, not at all." The Yule Ball is visually stunning, a real treat. It does get sad though when Ron accuses Hermione of fraternizing with the enemy, because basically he ruined her perfect evening.
2. The film begins with Harry's dream and Frank's murder. What is different from the book, is that Barty Crouch Jr. is at the Riddle house. When Harry wakes up, however, he is at the burrow. The QWC is also very short, and you only see the enterances of the players, no match.
3. Miranda Richardson barely has a part, but from what she has, she is deliciously nasty. Brendan Gleason is superb! A real treat to see on screen. His Mad-Eye can be downright nasty, but he has some nice soft scenes as well. The film-makers do something neat in the movie with a "twitch" that Mad Eye has, that kind of gives away the big secret at the end.

Posted: 11/14/05 at 7:43amSeeing this on Thursday at midnight. Can't wait. I'm glad I was right in my prediction that the very long Qudditch World Cup scene that opens the book could be trimmed down to being very short. All you need is to establish the Portkeys and the mark of doom.

I'm also seeing it Thursday at minuit, Poppy! :) I am so excited I could die...I found like, the ONE theatre in all of Manhattan and Brooklyn that wasn't sold out and snapped up two tickets today.

Oh, I wish my local theatre was sad cool enough to have a midnight screening. Then again, that neighborhood isn't exactly nice late at night.

I'm surprised there isn't a theatre in Vancouver doing one at midnight for GoF. (They did for all the LOTR and HPs preceding this.) I've got tickets for the first show on Friday...on an IMAX screen!
To people who have seen the movie, is the Dark Mark bit effectively creepy? (I hope they keep the campground owner's family dangling in the air - just reading it squicked me out nicely.) And Jason Isaacs! How much screen time does he get?

I'm going at midnight!! Very excited.
I'll continue to be happy and excited until I have to wake up early for work on Friday. The fun will cease then.

Posted: 11/15/05 at 8:04pmTiff, won't it be fun when mothers start screaming because the movies are traumatizing their kids? I mean, the ending of Goblet of Fire is downright mild compared with that of Half-Blood Prince.

I'm so excited about the new movie. I also have tickets for midnight on Thursday, it will be fun. (And I am hoping at least some parents will keep thier small children home on the late weeknight.)
So many parents are going to go nuts at the "darkness" of the films, I love it, they should actually pay attention. Do not use movies as babysitters.

Mr. Roxy, this'll get you guys back into the movie theatre?
(I'm going bacak grudgingly. There are certainly things that simply must be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated.)
Plum, luckily I'm seeing a noon time showing, so I hope the little runts are still in school. The last couple of times, we've had to contend with snivelly little walking-breathing-birth-control (as I call the runts), but this time I suppose it'll be us and the geris at the IMAX!

Smartpenguin, that is my hope too.
I saw HP3 with a bunch of 4/5 year olds in the theater and they were so annoying...I say if you can't read the books, you can't see the movies!
I think my audience will mostly be college students and they at least know to stay still and keep quiet!

I originally heard it would be 3 D IMAX. Oh well
I know they charge $ 15 clams a ticket . It is 1/2 that for me as I take my hat off & it is a wonder what prematurely gray hair will do for you - get you in as a senior
#23re: Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire
Posted: 11/15/05 at 8:28pmI'm seeing it with my friends for my birthday! How lucky is that, the movie comes out the day after!

Wow, 3-D IMAX would've been great! The last film I saw on IMAX was Kill Bill, but not 3-D.
Unfortunately, no gray hairs here yet. Perhaps if I play the part right, I could get in under child's admission though.

Posted: 11/15/05 at 8:38pmMan, I'm going to miss student discounts when I get back to the States. Movie tickets are just about the only things that have ended up being cheaper in London. Especially on Wedensday matinees. Oh, matinees. How I love thee.

Posted: 11/15/05 at 8:42pmI'll deal with fangirls, hopefully they will faint when Daniel appears the first time, then I can watch the movie in peace.
